Charleston Classic Field Announced, Huskers Take on UMass in Tournament Opener

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – Nebraska will take on a first-time foe to open the Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant, as the pairing for the eight-team field was unveiled Wednesday morning. The eight-team, 12-game tournament runs Nov. 21-24 at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.

The Huskers will take on UMass in their tournament opener on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 11:30 a.m. (CT) on ESPN3.  This will be the first-ever meeting on the court between the two programs, as the Minutemen went 21-12 last year and reached the NIT. UMass returns three starters, including All-Atlantic 10 point guard Chaz Williams, who ranked third nationally in assists per game (7.3 apg) in 2012-13 while also averaging a team-high 15.5 points per game.

Nebraska would take on either UAB or New Mexico on Friday Nov. 22, with the semifinal taking place at 1:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPN2 or ESPNU and the consolation game taking place at 11 a.m. on ESPNU or ESPN3.  New Mexico returns four starters from a team that went 29-6 and was a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Guard Kendall Williams (13.5 ppg, 5.0 apg) and center Alex Kirk (12.1 ppg, 8.0 rpg) highlight the Lobo returners. UAB returns four starters for second-year coach Jerod Haase, paced by All-CUSA forward Rod Rucker, who averaged 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game as a junior. Nebraska will meet one of the remaining four teams – Clemson, Davidson Georgia and Temple – on the final day of competition on Sunday, Nov. 24.

ESPN3 will have five exclusive games and ESPNU will air four contests, while the championship game will be shown on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN2. Colorado won the 2012 tournament title. Previous winners include Clemson (2008), Miami (2009), Georgetown (2010) and Northwestern (2011).

Nebraska, under second-year Coach Tim Miles, returns three starters from a team that went 15-18 in his first season, including guard Ray Gallegos and forwards David Rivers and Shavon Shields. Gallegos, who averaged 12.5 ppg in 2012-13, led the Big Ten in 3-pointers per game and ranked second in school history with 83 3-pointers, while Shields averaged 8.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game as a true freshman. Rivers started NU’s final 17 games at forward and averaged 5.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. In all, 10 letterwinners return for the Huskers in 2013-14, while eight newcomers, including three redshirts, will suit up for the Scarlet and Cream this season.

The Detroit Lions Announce Agreement With BIG TEN for Bowl Game at Ford Field

Ford-Field-Big-Ten-Bowl-Game-FootballDETROIT – The Detroit Lions announced today that they have entered into a six-year partnership with the Big Ten Conference for a bowl game that will be played at Ford Field beginning in 2014.

The game will be officially named once sponsorship agreements are in place. The inaugural game is tentatively scheduled forDecember 30, 2014 (pending TV broadcast schedule).

“We are thrilled to be hosting a new bowl game in Detroit that will be anchored by an annual commitment from the Big Ten,” said Detroit Lions Team President Tom Lewand. “In addition to showcasing our city and its rich football tradition, this game will be an opportunity for fans to enjoy a postseason matchup featuring one of college football’s best conferences.”

At the end of each college football season, the Big Ten and a conference to be named will determine their team representatives after discussion between bowl and conference officials to create the best possible matchup.

Martinez Named to Davey O’Brien Award Watch List

Taylor-Martinez-Nebraska-Huskers-footballLincoln – Husker quarterback Taylor Martinez continued Nebraska’s string of players on watch lists this month, as the senior was named to the 2013 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award® Watch List on Wednesday.  This marks the third straight year that Martinez, an O’Brien Award semifinalist in 2010, has been on the preseason watch list for the award, which honor’s the nation’s top quarterback.

The 6-1, 210-pound Martinez has already shattered several Nebraska records in his first three seasons as Nebraska’s starting quarterback. Martinez has established NU records for career and season total offense, career passing yards and ranks second among quarterbacks in career rushing yards. Martinez’s 39 career starts are the second-most of any returning player in the country, and his 2,858 career rushing yards are the most among active FBS players.

He was a first-team All-Big Ten pick by the Big Ten Coaches in 2012, after throwing for 2,871 yards and 23 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,019 yards and 10 scores. He led the Big Ten in total offense per game (277.9 ypg) and passing efficiency (141.59) while guiding a Husker attack that led the Big Ten in total offense. He had three games with at least 200 yards passing while posting five 100-yard rushing games, including a 205-yard performance at Michigan State.

Martinez is one of three Big Ten quarterbacks on the initial watch list, joining Braxton Miller of Ohio State and Devin Gardner of Michigan.

The list will be narrowed to 16 semifinalists on Monday, Nov. 4. The Foundation and the Selection Committee will announce three finalists on Monday, Nov. 25. Colorado Man Wins Buffalo Chip Toss in Nebraska

Buffalo-Chip-TossCHADRON, Neb. (AP) — A Colorado man has won the men’s championship at the annual World Championship Buffalo Chip Toss at the Fur Trade Days event in Chadron.

The Panhandle Post website for station KQSK says 27-year-old Charley Teal of Fort Collins, Colo., threw a piece of dried bison dung 103 feet, 6 inches on Saturday to win the male 18-and-older competition.

His throw was well short of the world record of nearly 187 feet set in 2000.

The women’s crown for those 18 and older was claimed by 39-year old Crystal Ford, of Fort Collins, Colo., who tossed a chip 62 feet, 7 inches.

Nike Puts Wrong State on Panthers T-Shirt

Panthers-Nike-T-ShirtA $32 T-shirt that appeared on Nike’s website has been pulled.

The company used an image of South Carolina to represent the Carolina Panthers, which are based in North Carolina.

The shirt placed the Panthers team logo and the abbreviation “NC” on top of a rather large graphic image of South Carolina.

Nike issued a formal apology:

“A small quantity of incorrect Carolina Panthers tee shirts were recently made available for sale. This product should not have been sold. We have removed it from sale and apologize for the error.”

NL Batters No Match for AL’s Heat

Nuggets Name Karnisovas Assistant GM

Arturas-Karnisovas-Denver-NuggetsDENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets have hired Arturas Karnisovas to serve as assistant general manager.

Karnisovas will help new general manager Tim Connelly and team president Josh Kroenke with day-to-day operations related to scouting and player personnel matters.

Karnisovas, 42, spent the last five years with the Houston Rockets, most recently as their scouting director. He started with the Rockets as an international scout after spending four years in basketball operations in the NBA’s league office.

Prior to working in the NBA, Karnisovas had an impressive international playing career. After attending Seton Hall from 1990-94, he helped Lithuania win Olympic bronze medals in 1992 and ’96 and played professionally for Barcelona, Bologna, Olympiakos and Athens, reaching the Euroleague Final Four three times.

Nebraska Moves to Revoke Dennard’s Probation

Alfonzo-Dennard-Nebraska-Huskers-Football-New-England-PatriotsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska prosecutors are moving to have probation revoked for New England Patriots’ defensive back Alfonzo Dennard.

Online court records say an arraignment on the revocation motion is scheduled for July 31.

The 23-year-old Dennard was pulled over in Lincoln, Neb., early Thursday morning and is charged with first-offense drunken driving, refusing a chemical test and a traffic infraction.

It was Dennard’s second arrest in 15 months. The former Cornhuskers star hasn’t served a 30-day jail sentence for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest outside a Lincoln bar on April 21, 2012. That term is scheduled to begin next March. He also was sentenced to two years of probation.

His attorney from the 2012 case didn’t immediately return a call Tuesday from The Associated Press.

Bell Named to Biletnikoff Award Watch List

Kenny-Bell-Nebraska-Huskers-football-receiverLincoln – University of Nebraska junior wide receiver Kenny Bell joins the growing list of Huskers on preseason watch lists, as he was selected for the Biletnikoff Award on Tuesday. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder from Boulder, Colo., comes off a season where he earned second-team All-Big Ten honors from the coaches and media, and first-team accolades from BTN.com and ESPN.com among others.

Bell comes one off the most prolific receiving season in school history, setting Husker sophomore marks for catches (50), yards (863), touchdowns (eight) and 100-yard receiving games (three). His 50 catches ranked seventh on NU’s single-season chart while his yards and TDs both were eighth all-time for a single season at Nebraska. Of Bell’s 50 catches in 2012, 16 went for at least 20 yards, including all eight of his touchdowns. He had a career-high nine catches for 136 yards and two scores against Minnesota, while his other two 100-yard games came at UCLA and at Ohio State. In addition, Bell also averaged 23.2 yards on 14 kickoff returns in 2012 and set the school record for longest TD run by a freshmen in 2011 (82 yards).

In two seasons at Nebraska, he has 82 catches for 1,324 yards and 11 touchdowns, while leading the Huskers in catches, receiving yards and touchdown receptions each of the past two seasons.

The 2013 Biletnikoff Award will be presented live on December 12, 2013, on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show, and the 2013 banquet is set for Saturday, February 8, 2014.

Cuddyer Just Misses Final Round in Home Run Derby

Yoenis Cespedes won the derby Monday night, becoming the first player left out of the All-Star game to take home the crown. The Oakland Athletics slugger beat Bryce Harper 9-8 in the final round at reconfigured Citi Field, hitting the decisive drive with five swings to spare.

Cuddyer hit 15 home runs in the first two rounds but was edged out of the final by Harper, who hit 16. Cespedes easily made the final round after hitting 17 homers in just the first round.
