Huskers Add Tim Wagner to Roster

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln —University of Nebraska Men’s Basketball Coach Tim Miles has announced the addition of Tim Wagner to the Husker basketball roster for the upcoming season. Wagner is a 6-foot-3 guard who hails from Galesville, Wis., and he will join the team as a walk-on when classes begin in August.

Wagner played high school ball for his father Mark at Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School, lettering four years and totaling 1,354 points, 249 rebounds, 280 assists and 83 steals. As a senior last winter, Wagner averaged 23.8 points per game, was the Winona Daily News Boys High School Player of the Year and the Coulee Conference Player of the Year, leading G-E-T to a 20-5 record and an appearance in the sectional finals. He was chosen as a Division 3 all-state pick as a senior, a season highlighted by a 41-point effort against Blair-Taylor. As a junior, he earned honorable-mention all-conference honors, averaging 14.1 points and 3.1 assists per game as G-E-T went 26-2 with a state runner-up finish after reaching the state tournament for the first time in more than 50 years. He played AAU ball with the Wisconsin Jets for Coach Matt Majkrzak.

The relationship between Miles and the Wagner family dates back nearly three decades when Miles and Mark Wagner were both students at the University of Mary in North Dakota.

“Tim Wagner is a guy who’s dad was one of my best friends in college,” Miles said. “I’ve known his dad, Mark, since 1985. When Mark came to me and said ‘Would you consider Tim?’ I said, ‘Absolutely. This guy’s like blood.’ He’s a good player. He’s that prototypical non-scholarship guy you want who could maybe have an impact on your program.”

Wagner also excelled in the classroom, posting a 3.95 GPA and was an academic all-state selection in basketball. A four-year academic all-conference pick in basketball, he will major in math education at Nebraska.

The son of Mark and Nancy Wagner, Tim is the second Wisconsin native in this year’s freshman class, joining Nick Fuller from Sun Prairie, who signed with Nebraska during the 2012 fall period.

Evans Named to Thorpe Award Watch List

Ciante-Evans-Nebraska-Huskers-footballNebraska senior cornerback Ciante Evans is one of 48 defensive backs named Friday to the 2013 watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award.

The 5-11, 190-pound Evans is the leader of the Nebraska secondary and one of the most versatile defensive backs in the country. Evans has seen his most extensive action as Nebraska’s nickel back during his career, but also lines up in a normal cornerback role when the Huskers are in a base 4-3 defense.

In 2012, Evans started 12 of 14 games and finished the season with 56 tackles, including 38 solo stops. He added eight pass breakups on the year and had an interception against Idaho State that he returned 29 yards for a touchdown. Evans had six games with five or more tackles in 2012. For his play, Evans was a first-team All-Big Ten choice by CBS Sports.com and ESPN.com and was an honorable-mention All-Big Ten pick by the league’s coaches.

Evans made 33 tackles as a sophomore in 2011, and played in eight games as a true freshman in 2010.

The Thorpe Award was established in 1986 and is given to the nation’s top defensive back. Three finalists for the award will be named in late November and the winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 12.

Streaking Dodgers Beat Rockies 6-1

colorado-rockiesLOS ANGELES (AP) — Chris Capuano pitched shutout ball for 6 1/3 innings, Mark Ellis drove in four runs, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 6-1 on Thursday night for their fifth win in a row.

The Dodgers moved above .500 for the first time since April 15.

Capuano (3-6) allowed six hits, struck out a season-high eight and walked none to earn just his second win at home and first since beating Miami 5-3 on May 12.

Drew Pomeranz (0-3) gave up three runs and seven hits in four innings, struck out four and walked five in his third start of the season.

Ellis went 3 for 4 with a walk, the fourth time he has had three or more hits in a game this season.

Seven Share the Lead

There had never been as many as seven co-leaders after the first round at a U.S. Senior Open. The previous record was five in 1997.

Rocco Mediate and Bernhard Langer are among those a shot off the lead.

Freeman, Delabar Voted in to All-Star Game, CarGo Withdraws From Home Run Derby

2013-MLB-All-Star-Game-New-York-MetsNEW YORK (AP) — Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman and Toronto reliever Steve Delabar have won the fan voting for the last spots in the All-Star game.

Freeman’s victory means Los Angeles Dodgers sensation Yasiel Puig (pweeg) will not get to play in the July 16 game at Citi Field unless he is added as an injury replacement. Puig is off to a terrific start in his first stint in the majors, but he’s only been up for five weeks, leading some to question whether he belongs on the NL team.

Freeman set a record with 19.7 million votes, and Puig was second. Delabar won with 9.6 million votes

In another All-Star note, Pedro Alvarez of the Pittsburgh Pirates has replaced Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies for the NL team in the All-Star Home Run Derby. MLB says Gonzalez pulled out because of a sprained middle finger on his right hand.

Nuggets Sign Big Man Hickson

JJ-Hickson-Denver-NuggetsDENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets bolstered their frontcourt Thursday by signing free agent forward J.J. Hickson to a three-year deal.

The 24-year-old bruiser is coming off his best season last year in Portland when he averaged 12.7 points and a career-high 10.4 rebounds. He joined Dwight Howard as the only players to average 12 points, 10 boards and shoot at least 55 percent from the field.

General manager Tim Connelly called Hickson “one of the most improved players in the league last year,” and said he gives Denver a low-post option in the halfcourt “and he’s a relentless rebounder who will help us get out and run.”

Hickson has averaged 9.8 points and 6.8 rebounds in five NBA seasons with stops in Cleveland, Sacramento and Portland.

Broncos President Says Apology Rings Hollow

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos coach John Fox gathered his players at midfield last month just before they dispersed for summer vacation and gave them his usual admonition about staying out of trouble.

By all accounts, they have heeded that advice not to embarrass themselves or the organization. But Executive Vice President John Elway’s top two assistants haven’t.

One day before Fox delivered his message, the Broncos brass had learned that Tom Heckert, the former Cleveland Browns general manager, had been charged with drunken driving in nearby Parker just a month after being hired as Denver’s director of pro personnel.

The Broncos kept Heckert’s June 11 arrest quiet until The Associated Press reported it Tuesday, a day after Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell apologized for his arrest over the weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence.
