Oh, Craps: Bronco Player Facing Felony Charges For Cheating in Vegas

quinton carterDenver Broncos safety Quinton Carter is facing felony charges following his arrest last weekend on allegations that he cheated at a Las Vegas casino craps game.

Carter was arrested late Saturday at the Texas Station casino after officials reported he added money to his bets after the dice had already rolled.

Carter was charged with three counts of fraudulent act in a gaming establishment. Each charge carries a possible six-year prison sentence.

Carter is 24. He was booked and released at the Clark County jail in Las Vegas. It’s not immediately clear if he has a lawyer.

Carter also faces a warrant charge of failure to complete counseling after pleading guilty in a 2011 misdemeanor marijuana possession case.

A Broncos spokesman says the team is looking into the matter.

Husker Sand Volleyball Plays Inaugural Games

The newest varsity sport at Nebraska opens its inaugural season today. Husker sand volleyball takes on Florida State and Pepperdine at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California for their first ever games. Nebraska is ranked ninth in the preseason AVCA sand volleyball poll. Florida State is ranked fourth and Pepperdine, the defending national champions, are ranked number one. Nebraska will play four other top-ten teams in the opening week of their season.

Nuggets Spoil Melo’s Homecoming in Rout

Carmelo Anthony’s return to Denver resulted in an early exit and a blowout. Anthony left the game in the third quarter with knee soreness, and his Knicks were pasted by the Nuggets 117-94 for Denver’s tenth-straight win. The Nuggets had built a 22 point lead by halftime and cruised from there. Wilson Chandler led the Nuggets with 24 points. Anthony scored just nine points before departing. The Nuggets host the Memphis Grizzlies Friday night.

Broncos Sign Welker, Add Former Husker Bradley on Busy Day in Free Agency

The Denver Broncos made headlines on day two of the NFL’s free agency period by inking one of the most prolific wide recievers in the game. Wes Welker is the newest target for Peyton Manning. The 31 year-old agreed to a two-year deal worth $12 million. Welker caught 118 passes in New England last season and averaged 112 receptions per year in his six seasons as a Patriot. He joins Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker in Denver’s now-loaded receiving corps. The Broncos did some other business as well, bolstering their front seven by signing defensive tackle Terrence Knighton and linebacker Stewart Bradley. Knighton, nicknamed ‘Pot Roast’, reunites with his former head coach, Jack Del Rio, who had Knighton in Jacksonville. Bradley, a former Husker and a 2008 All-Pro, is looking for opportunities after being a reserve for most of the last two years in Arizona.

Rockies Shut Out Cubs

Troy Tulowitzki drove in two runs and Jorge de la Rosa threw four shutout innings as the Colorado Rockies blanked the Chicago Cubs 2-0 in Cactus League play. De la Rosa struck out six Cubs and twice escaped bases-loaded jams in his most encouraging outing of the spring. Tulowitzki had an RBI double in the first inning and added a sacrifice fly in the sixth. The Rockies are off today.

Huskers Face Purdue in Big Ten Tourney Opener

Nebraska opens Big Ten tournament action tonight in Chicago as they face Purdue. The tenth-seeded Huskers will be hoping to win their first ever game at the Big Ten tourney, as they were one-and-done last year. The Boilermakers topped the Big Red 65-56 in Lincoln on January 16, but the Huskers were without Brandon Ubel in that game. Tonight’s winner faces Ohio State in second-round action. Tipoff tonight is scheduled for 5:30.

Broncos Sign OL Vasquez, Re-Sign DT Vickerson

The Denver Broncos were busy on the first day of the NFL’s free agency period, adding a piece to an already stout offensive line. The Broncos agreed to terms on a four-year contract with Louis Vasquez, formerly of division rival San Diego. Vasquez started all 16 games at right guard for the Chargers last season and has made 54 starts in his four-year career. The 335-pounder will likely fill the right guard slot for the Broncos, as concerns abound over the health of incumbent starter Chris Kuper. Kuper has had multiple ankle surgeries since suffering a gruesome ankle dislocation in 2011. Denver’s deal with Vasquez is reportedly worth $23.5 million, including $13 million guaranteed. The Broncos also brought back defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson on a two-year contract, and will resume negotiations on a restructuring of defensive end Elvis Dumervil’s deal.

Melo Returns to Denver to Face Streaking Nuggets

A little more than two years since he was traded away from Denver, Carmelo Anthony returns to the Mile High City tonight as his New York Knicks take on the red-hot Nuggets. ‘Melo’ went to the Knicks in February 2011 in exchange for, among others, current Nuggets contributors Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler. Both parties seem happy with the result of the trade two years on. The Nuggets have won a season-high nine straight games, while Anthony’s Knicks sit in second place in the Eastern Conference. Tip-off at the Pepsi Center is set for 7:30.

Huskers Still Have Shot at Postseason

It’s not too far fetched to think about the possibility of postseason play for the Husker men’s basketball team. Nebraska is 14-17 on the season entering the first round of the Big Ten tournament. A win or two in the conference tourney might convince a lower-tier postseason tournament, such as the NIT or CBI, to take a look at the Huskers. Nebraska executive associate athletic director Marc Boehm says he’s had preliminary discussions with head coach Tim Miles about the possibility, and also has spoken to a rep from the NIT. Neither tournament has a rule against taking teams with below-.500 records.
