BASKETBALL: Girls Subdistricts Underway (LISTEN to C2-11 Subdistrict on ESPN Radio 1410)

Girls basketball subdistrict action got underway across the state last night. One Lincoln County team took the floor last night – in the D1-11 play-in game, Maxwell fell to SMC 41-31. Tonight, in the D2-9 subdistrict, second-seed Brady faces Bertrand in Gothenburg. In the D1-11 subdistrict in North Platte, top-seed Sutherland will face SMC after their win last night. And in the D2-10 subdistrict, Wallace faces Hayes Center. But much of the local attention, and a good bit of statewide attention, will be focused on the C2-11 subdistrict in McCook, where two of the state’s best team’s take the floor. At 6 PM, top seed and third-ranked Hershey carries their eleven-game winning streak into their first-round game against Perkins County. At 7:30. it’s second-seed and fourth-ranked St. Patrick’s facing Dundy County-Stratton. ESPN Radio 1410 will bring you all the action, with pregame coverage starting at 5:45.

Nuggets Hope For New Streak to Start in Toronto

After their nine-game winning streak was snapped Sunday night, the Denver Nuggets hope to start a new streak tonight in Toronto as they take on the Raptors. The Nuggets have dominated the Raptors in recent years, winning 15 of the last 17 meetings. That includes a 113-110 triumph in Denver back on December 3. The Nuggets have won 15 of their last 18 games and are averaging over 111 points per game in that stretch. Tipoff tonight is set for 6 PM.

Hooper’s 29 Help Huskers Survive Hawkeyes

A big night from three-point range and clutch free throws down the stretch lifted the Husker women’s basketball team to their sixth straight win, a 76-75 triumph at Iowa. The Huskers hit 10 threes as a team and led by as many as 12 in the second half. Though the Hawkeyes made a late run, the Huskers were 4-4 from the free throw line in the final minute to secure the win. Jordan Hooper’s 29 points led the Huskers in the win. The Big Red are back in action Thursday night at home against Ohio State.

Tatum Edwards is Big Ten Softball Player of the Week

Nebraska junior catcher Taylor Edwards was awarded the first Big Ten Player of the Week honor of the season for her play in the Huskers’ five wins last weekend. Edwards batted .556 with three home runs and 15 RBI in five games. She blasted two grand slams in the same game against Illinois-Chicago and set a program record with 8 RBI in the game. The award is the first of Edwards’ career. The Huskers play five games in Tucson, Arizona this weekend.

Rockies, Fowler Agree on Two-Year Deal

The Colorado Rockies have agreed to terms with center fielder Dexter Fowler on a two-year contract worth $11.6 million. The contract ensures the team will avoid the arbitration process with Fowler until 2015. The 27-year old Fowler was one of the few bright spots for the Rockies in 2012. He had a break-out season, batting .300 with 15 home runs and 53 RBI to set career highs in all three categories.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — After a stunning loss last Thursday, the Indiana Hoosiers got back on course yesterday. Victor Oladipo scored a career-high 26 points, Cody Zeller added 24 in leading No. 1 Indiana back from a demoralizing loss to a huge road win in beating No. 10 Ohio State 81-68.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Brandt Snedeker is arguably the hottest golfer in the world right now. A runner-up to Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson the last two weeks on the PGA Tour, Snedeker fired a final round 7-under 65 for a two-shot victory over Chris Kirk in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

UNDATED (AP) — Lindsey Vonn had surgery on her right knee on Sunday after she shredded two ligaments during a crash last week at the world championships. The 28-year-old Vonn is hoping to be healed in time for the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, which are a year away.

Husker Women Shoot For Six in a Row at Iowa

Tonight in Iowa City, the Husker women’s basketball team searches for their sixth consecutive win as they face the Hawkeyes. After a slow start in Big Ten play, Nebraska’s hot streak has lifted them to a 7-3 record in the league, just half a game behind Purdue for second place. The Huskers have had just two other six-game conference winning streaks in program history. On the flip side, the Hawkeyes enter tonight on a three-game losing streak. Tipoff tonight is scheduled for 7:36.

Nuggets Streak Snapped in Three OT

In a triple-overtime thriller in Boston, the Denver Nuggets saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end with a 118-114 loss to the Celtics. The Nuggets came back from an eight-point fourth quarter deficit to force overtime, and had shots to win it in the final seconds of all three extra periods, but were unable to get any of them to drop. Ty Lawson’s 29 points led the Nuggets in the loss. The Nuggets are back in action Tuesday night at Toronto.
