Husker Women Hammer Hoosiers

The 23rd-ranked Husker women’s basketball team got double-doubles from Jordan Hooper and Emily Cady in a 67-38 rout of Indiana in Bloomington. Hooper scored 11 points and led the team with 11 rebounds, and Cady scored 11 of her own and pulled down 10 boards. The Huskers were led in scoring by a pair of unlikely sources, as sophomore guard Tear’a Laudermill and freshman guard Rachel Theriot each scored 14 points. Theriot made her first five shots from the field on her way to a career-high performance. The Huskers went on a 24-3 run that spanned the end of the first half and the beginning of the second to put the game beyond doubt. The win moves the Big Red to 12-4 and 2-1 in conference play. They play at eighth-ranked Penn State this Sunday afternoon.

Nuggets Welcome Lowly Cavaliers to Denver

The Denver Nuggets aim to keep their winning ways going as they welcome the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Pepsi Center tonight. A victory tonight would match a season-long four-game winning streak for the Nuggets, who are fresh off a win over Orlando Wednesday night. The Cavaliers come into Denver with one of the NBA’s worst records at 9-28. They’ve lost five straight games in Western Conference areans. Tipoff tonight is scheduled for 8 PM.

Rockies Great Helton Will Play in 2013

Though a hip injury created some doubt, Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton says he’ll be back in 2013. The 39 year-old had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip in August after suffering through a difficult season in which he batted a career low .238. He told the Denver Post he’s feeling much better this winter and will return to play. Helton is expected to fill a reduced role for the Rockies this summer in the final year of his contract.

No. 23 Husker Women Visit Hoosiers

The 23rd-ranked Husker women’s basketball team takes the floor tonight in Bloomington against Indiana. Nebraska is hoping to bounce back from a hard-fought overtime loss to number 14 Purdue in their last game, which dropped their record to 11-4 and their mark in Big Ten play to 1-1. The Hoosiers are 1-1 in the conference and 10-5 overall, already eclipsing last season’s total of six wins. Tipoff tonight is set for 5:30.

Nuggets Come Back to Knock Off Magic

The Denver Nuggets continued their home dominance with a 108-105 win over the Orlando Magic in Denver. Down by seven points entering the fourth quarter, the Nuggets chipped away and took the lead for good on a three-point play by Ty Lawson with a minute and a half to go. Kenneth Faried led the Nuggets with 19 points and 19 rebounds. Lawson also scored 19 points. The Nuggets have won three straight, and are now 21-16, 12-2 at home. They host Cleveland Friday night.

Huskers Hang Tough but Fall at No. 2 Michigan

The Husker men’s basketball team put forth an admirable effort at second-ranked Michigan, but just like all of the Wolverines’ opponents this season, it wasn’t enough. Michigan pulled away in the final minutes to defeat the Big Red 62-47. The Huskers held Michigan 20 points below their season scoring average and to just 38 percent shooting. But Nebraska shot just 33 percent and were outrebounded by 17 by a bigger Michigan squad. Ray Gallegos led the Huskers with 19 points. The Huskers fall to 9-7 and 0-3 in the Big Ten. They’re at 22nd-ranked Michigan State on Saturday.

Rockies Bring Back Former Closer Corpas on Minor League Deal

Manny Corpas as a Rockie

The Colorado Rockies have brought back a piece of their 2007 National League championship team. They signed relief pitcher Manny Corpas to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training yesterday. Corpas saved 19 games in the regular season and five in the playoffs during Colorado’s historic ‘Rocktober’ run. Elbow problems derailed his career afterwards. He sat out the 2011 season before reappearing in 2012 with the Chicago Cubs, where he pitched in 48 games and posted a 5.01 ERA.

Huskers Get Commitment From Top CA Running Back

Husker football scored big on the recruiting trail yesterday with the commitment of California running back Terrell Newby. Newby is considered to be the top running back in his state. He rushed for over 2300 yards and 45 touchdowns at West Hills Chaminade this past fall. Newby is rated a four-star prospect by all major recruiting services, and Rivals considers him the eighth-best running back in the country. He is the 20th member of Nebraska’s recruiting class of 2013.
