BASKETBALL: Bulldogs, Irish Make Season Debuts (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT to the Lady Bulldogs on ESPN Radio 1410)

The North Platte Bulldog boys and girls basketball teams get their seasons underway tonight. The Bulldog boys return four starters in Matt Kaminski’s second year on the sidelines. They face Lincoln High at the Doghouse tonight, with the tipoff scheduled for 7:30. The Lady Bulldogs bring back two starters for head coach Mark Woodhead. They make the trip to the capital city to face Lincoln High’s Lady Links. ESPN Radio 1410 will have the broadcast of the girls game, with pregame coverage at 7:30 and the tipoff at 7:45. Also tonight, the St. Pat’s Irish and Lady Irish, both ranked in the preseason Class C2 polls, open their campaigns hosting Broken Bow. In other boys and girls hoops doubleheaders, Hershey travels to Gothenburg, Maxwell hosts SMC, Wallace is at Maywood, and Brady visits Wauneta-Palisade.

Iguodala’s Winner Waved Off as Nuggets Fall

Frigid fourth-quarter shooting doomed the Denver Nuggets to a 106-105 loss to the Golden State Warriors. Denver held a 16 point lead early in the third quarter but went ice cold in the fourth, missing 13 of 17 shots from the field and allowing the Warriors to storm back and take the lead. The Nuggets had the ball with half a second left and Andre Iguodala’s three-point shot went in, but it was ruled to have come after the buzzer sounded. Iguodala’s 22 points led the Nuggets in the loss. The Nuggets head south on I-5 for tonight’s matchup at the Staples Center against the Los Angeles Lakers. Tip-off is set for 9:30.

Huskers Sweep UM-ES, Move to Second Round Tonight

The Husker volleyball team eased past Maryland-Eastern Shore in three sets in first round action of the NCAA tournament at the NU Coliseum. Nebraska swept the Hawks 25-14, 25-10, 25-18 for their 29th consecutive first-round NCAA tournament victory. Gina Mancuso led the Huskers in the victory with 12 kills. Hannah Werth added 11 kills. Mancuso and Werth combined to hit at a dominant .526 clip on the night. The Huskers will take on Northern Iowa in second-round action tonight. The Panthers defeated Kansas State in three sets last night. First serve is set for 7 PM.

Huskers Get Eighth Home Game in 2013

Nebraska’s 2013 football season opener against Southern Mississippi will be played at Memorial Stadium, after Southern Miss sold home field advantage back to Nebraska for $2.125 million. There had been previous rumors that the game, originally scheduled for Southern Miss’s home stadium in Hattiesburg, might move to the Superdome in New Orleans or Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. But this deal was reached between the two schools so that Southern Miss can acquire the money they need to buy out the contract of their recently fired head coach, Ellis Johnson.

Rivalry Renewed: NU, OU to Meet in 2021, 2022

Nebraska has agreed to renew their most storied gridiron rivalry. The Huskers and Oklahoma Sooners will play a home-and-home in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. The two teams will meet September 17, 2021 in Norman, and September 18, 2022 in Lincoln. Nebraska and Oklahoma met 86 times on the gridiron as members of the what began as the Big Six and evolved into the Big 12 Conference. Their last meeting came in the 2010 Big 12 championship game, won by OU 23-20. The Sooners lead the all-time series, with 45 wins to Nebraska’s 38 and three ties.

BASKETBALL: Sailors, Swedes Among Those Opening Seasons Tonight

The high school basketball season begins tonight, with seven area teams scheduled for girls and boys doubleheaders. Sutherland travels to take on Broken Bow. The Lady Sailors are ranked in the top ten in both major Class D1 polls. Elsewhere, Gothenburg travels to Lexington. The Swede boys return several starters from a strong team last season and should be one of the area’s best this year. Also on tap tonight, Cozad vists Chase County, Sandhills/Thedford treks to Burwell, Med Valley hosts Southwest, and SMC welcomes Mullen.

No. 21 Huskers Routed by No. 11 Maryland

The 21st ranked Husker women’s basketball team lost to 11th ranked Maryland 90-71 in Big Ten/ACC Challenge play at the Devaney Center last night. Lindsey Moore scored 17 points to lead the Huskers in the losing effort. Jordan Hooper joined Moore in double figures with 15 points. Maryland went on an 11-2 run late in the first half to take the lead and would never trail again. The Huskers allowed the visiting Terrapins to shoot over 50% from the field. Nebraska drops to 5-2 with the loss. They host Idaho State Saturday afternoon.

 

Huskers Open NCAA Tourney Play Tonight

The NCAA volleyball tournament opens tonight, and for the ninth straight season the Huskers are hosting first and second round action at the NU Coliseum. The Huskers, who finished the regular season with a 23-6 record and in a second place tie in the Big Ten Conference, are the fourth overall seed in the tournament. Tonight they take on Maryland-Eastern Shore, the champions of the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference. Nebraska’s match will be the nightcap in a first-round doubleheader at the Coliseum tonight. In the first match, Kansas State, the team that upset the Huskers in the second round last season, will take on Northern Iowa at 4:30. The Huskers match will follow at 7 PM. The winners tonight will face each other on Friday night for the right to advance to the Omaha Regional.

Nuggets to Face Warriors For Third Time This Season

The Denver Nuggets hope to start a new winning streak tonight against a familiar opponent. After having a four-game run of victories snapped in a loss at Utah, the Nuggets return to the floor to take on the Golden State Warriors in Oakland. It’s the third time the Nuggets will be playing the Warriors in 16 games to start this season. Denver is 2-0 against Golden State, including a double-OT win at Oracle Arena back on November 10, and has won 11 of the last 14 meetings in the series. Tip-off tonight is scheduled for 9:30.
