State Games Torch Run Begins Monday, June 6 in Omaha

cornhusker state gamesLINCOLN, Neb. — The Cornhusker State Games (CSG) Torch Run begins Monday, June 6 at 12:30 p.m. with a launch ceremony at Stinson Park in Aksarben Village, 2285 S. 67th St. in Omaha.

Following brief remarks from sponsors and officials, the torch will be ignited and carried out of the park to the Keystone Bike Trail by members of the Nebraska National Guard, which sponsors the CSG Torch Run.  Runners will then spend most of the afternoon relaying the torch to the Sarpy Community YMCA in 1-2 mile legs via the Keystone and West Papio Bike Trails.

The Torch Run is the annual precursor to the Games, which take place July 15-24 and offer competition in 68 sports for Nebraska athletes of all ages and abilities.  More than 13,000 are expected to participate in this, the 32nd annual edition.

The Omaha segment is the first of eight across Nebraska and was moved up to avoid conflicts with the College World Series.  The run resumes next week with legs leading to Scottsbluff June 13, Sidney June 14, North Platte June 15, Kearney June 16, Grand Island June 17, Norfolk June 18and Lincoln June 21.

All told, the CSG Torch Run covers over 500 miles and involves approximately 1,000 runners and volunteers.

North Platte Senior First Nationals continue hot start

np first nationalsIt was another perfect weekend for the North Platte First Nationals Senior Legion baseball team. Saturday was the home opener for the First Nationals hosting Columbus at Bill Wood Field. In game one, North Platte won 6-1 and followed up with a 13-3 win in six innings in game two over Columbus. Sunday’s doubleheader against Norfolk at Bill Wood Field began with a 6-0 win for North Platte in game one and once again the First Nationals dominated the second game of the doubleheader, ending it by run rule with a 13-3 victory after four innings. Both series were Cornhusker League games and improves the First Nationals Senior Legion to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Cornhusker League.

The Junior Legion suffered their first setback of the season in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader at Columbus with a 10-2 loss. The Juniors bounced back with a 10-2 win in game two. On Sunday, the North Platte Junior Legion scored 14 runs in the first inning of game one at Norfolk. North Platte eventually won 17-0 in game one and won game two 15-7 to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Monday night’s games at Bill Wood Field were postponed due to the weather. The North Platte Juniors were leading Lexington 12-6 in the fourth inning when the games were called for the night. On Tuesday, May 31, both the Junior and Senior Legion will be at home to host Kearney in Cornhusker League games at Bill Wood Field. The Juniors game is scheduled for 5 pm and the Seniors game will follow around 7:30 pm.

 

Huskers Headed to Clemson Regional

Lincoln – For the second time in three years the Nebraska baseball team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Huskers, who are 37-20 on the year, earned an at-large invitation during the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship Selection Show Monday morning on ESPNU and will play in the Clemson Regional.

Nebraska is the #3 seed and will play #2 seed Oklahoma State on Friday at 11 a.m. (CT) on ESPNU.

The Clemson Tigers are the #1 seed and will face #4 seed Western Carolina at 6 p.m. (CT) on ESPN3.

Nebraska will be making its 14th NCAA Regional appearance.

Huskers Drop Big Ten Tournament Opener, 5-1

Omaha – A five-run sixth inning by the Michigan State Spartans (35-18) doomed the Nebraska baseball team (37-19) on Wednesday afternoon, as the No. 7 seed Spartans beat the No. 2 seed Huskers, 5-1, in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. Steele finishes t-15th; Bulldogs place 7th as team at state golf

nphs golfNorth Platte High School golf team placed seventh at the Class A state golf tournament at Norfolk Country Club. The Bulldogs moved up six places in the team standings on the final day of competition with a 308 team score, the second best team round of the day. Individually, Kort Steele was the Bulldogs top finisher in a tie for 15th with a 9-over par 153. Kade Wroot tied for 32nd and Kyle Zimbelman tied for the fifth best round of the day on Wednesday with a 75 to finish 35th overall for the two-day tournament. Chesney Tatman finished tied for 40th and Jayden Neal finished 69th.

Jake Jones ties for 8th at Class D State Golf

golfAfter two rounds at Lake Maloney Golf Course, Jake Jones of North Platte St. Patrick’s finished tied for eighth place with a 165 overall score. Jones was one of seven players to shoot under 80 on Wednesday’s final round. Jones was the lone qualifier for the North Platte St. Patrick’s Irish at the Class D state golf tournament. The Sutherland team placed 14th overall with Jordan Richardson leading the way with a 40th place finish.
