Swede softball is #2 in the state in Class C! They’re looking to finish their season strong and get back to the state tournament. The Lady Swede volleyball team continues their fine start, and are being strengthened by playing tough teams. And the football team returns to the field tonight to try and beat the team that ended their season last year. Hear all about it in this week’s Gothenburg Swede sports update!

Friday Sports Day – Carpenter Returns for Playoff-Hopeful Cardinals

Woods in the mix

ATLANTA (AP) — Tiger Woods and Justin Rose will be playing in the final pairing of the day at the Tour Championship. At 4-under-par, they share a one-stroke lead over four golfers heading into round two of the final FedEx Cup playoff tournament. Five more players are just two off the pace with 54 holes to play at East Lake in Atlanta.

Top-ranked Rory McIlroy carded a 1-under 69 playing alongside Woods on Thursday. Phil Mickelson is also among the seven golfers three shots back after 18 holes.

Cards ace returns

UNDATED (AP) — There is just one afternoon start on a full major league schedule, with the Chicago Cubs hosting a playoff-hopeful St. Louis Cardinals team that rides a four-game winning streak into the Windy City.

Chris Carpenter is set to make his 2012 debut just in time for the Cards, who currently hold the National League’s second wild card. They are two and a-half games ahead of Milwaukee. The Brewers put a five-game winning streak on the line at Washington this evening.

Carpenter was 4-0 last postseason but hasn’t pitched since winning Game 7 of the World Series against Texas. He returns less than two months after undergoing surgery to relieve a nerve ailment that caused numbness up and down the right side of his body.

Also tonight in the NL, Philadelphia is at Atlanta, Houston is home to Pittsburgh, Cincinnati entertains the L.A. Dodgers, Miami is at New York, Arizona plays at Colorado and San Francisco hosts San Diego.

Under the lights in the AL, it’ll be Minnesota at Detroit, New York home to Oakland, Baltimore playing at Boston, Tampa Bay hosting Toronto, Cleveland at Kansas City, Chicago at the L.A. Angels and Seattle home to Texas.

Cooperstown has some special guests

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — The real-life inspirations for the film “A League of Their Own” are taking a trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame as part of their reunion being held in central New York.

The former players in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League will be in Cooperstown today to sign autographs. The women, now in their 70s and 80s, have scheduled an exhibition softball game at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse on Saturday.

The league was formed during World War II when many major league and minor league players were entering the armed services. It was disbanded in the early 1950s.

Their story was told in the 1992 film starring Tom Hanks and Geena Davis, among others.

Thursday Sports Wrap – Prime Time Blowout in NFL

Nats and Reds clinch…Giants’ magic number shrinks

UNDATED (AP) — Washington will get its first taste of postseason baseball in 79 years come October.

The NL-leading Nationals clinched a playoff berth with last night’s 4-1 victory over the visiting L.A. Dodgers. Ross Detwiler and three relievers combined on a four-hitter.

The Nationals are the first baseball team in our nation’s capital to reach the postseason since the Senators’ appearance in the 1933 World Serries.

The Nats’ magic number for clinching the NL East is eight.

In the rest of the NL:

— The Cincinnati Reds became the first team in the majors to clinch a playoff spot this season, beating the Chicago Cubs 5-3 while manager Dusty Baker remained in a Chicago hospital after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, though he’s expected to return to Cincinnati on Friday. Johnny Cueto improved to 18-9. The Reds’ magic number for clinching the NL Central is two.

__ The Milwaukee Brewers just keep winning to stay two and a-half games back in the wild card hunt. The Brewers rallied with four in the eighth and another run in the ninth to beat fading Pittsburgh 9-7. Aramis Ramirez homered and drove in three.

__ Pinch hitter Carlos Beltran snapped a sixth-inning tie with a two-run double and Allen Craig hit a three-run home run, powering the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory that completed a season sweep at home over the Houston Astros. The Cards are 2½ games up for the second NL wild card with 12 games remaining. That’s Houston’s 102nd loss.

— Jesus Guzman homered and Clayton Richard won his 14th game as the San Diego Padres held on to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5.

__ Philadelphia scored eight runs in the first inning and coasted to a 16-1 laugher over the New York Mets behind a 21-hit attack. Ryan Howard hit his 12th homer, a grand slam in the ninth, and drove in five. The Mets used 10 pitchers to no avail.

Over in the AL:

— Streaking Ichiro Suzuki hit a go-ahead, two-run double in a seven-run fourth inning capped by Nick Swisher’s grand slam, and the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-7. That gives the Yanks a one-game AL East lead over idle Baltimore. Suzuki was 9 for 12 with three doubles, a homer, four RBIs and four steals in the three-game sweep.

— B.J. Upton hit a game-ending, three-run homer off Vicente Padilla, capping Tampa Bay’s six-run ninth inning and lifting the Rays to a sorely needed 7-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox. The Rays remain five and a-half back of Oakland for the second wild card slot.

— The AL West-leading Texas Rangers increased their lead to four games by beating the L.A. Angels 3-1. The game was tied 1-1 until Adrian Beltre belted his 34th homer, a two-run shot in the ninth.

— The AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox again failed to come up with a clutch hit in a 4-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals. Eric Hosmer singled home the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning. The White Sox stayed two games ahead of Detroit.

__ Seth Smith homered, doubled and drove in four runs, and the Oakland Athletics avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Detroit Tigers 12-4 in a matchup of AL playoff contenders. That ends the A’s three-game losing streak.

— Casey Kotchman singled with the bases-loaded in the 10th inning, giving the Cleveland Indians a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Giants pass road test

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The banged-up New York Giants went to Carolina and battered the Panthers 36-7 in the NFL’s Week 3 opener.

Eli Manning completed 27 of 35 passes for 288 yards and a touchdown while Andre Brown ran for a career-high 113 yards and two TDs while subbing for injured starter Ahmad Bradshaw.

And Ramses Barden made up for ther absence of injured wide receiver Domenik Hixon by catching nine passes for a career-high 138 yards in his first NFL start.

The defending champion Giants improve to 2-1 while the Panthers fall to 1-2.

Revis green lighted…Rams deny dirty hits on RGIII

UNDATED (AP) — New York Jets defensive back Darrelle Revis has been cleared for contact for the first time since suffering a concussion in the team’s season opener.

Coach Rex Ryan is optimistic about the All-Pro cornerback’s chances of playing Sunday against the Dolphins.

In other football news:

— The St. Louis Rams are brushing aside comments questioning their style of play by Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III. Griffin told reporters Wednesday the Rams were “dirty” and “unprofessional” during their 31-28 victory on Sunday. He claimed he was hit after plays and in other unnecessary ways during the game. The Rams denied breaking any rules.

— Minnesota Vikings linebacker Erin Henderson has missed his second straight day of practice because of a concussion. Coach Leslie Frazier said the team had “no indications” he had a head injury last Sunday. Henderson didn’t complain about symptoms until Wednesday, when he told Frazier he “did not feel right.”

Co-leaders at Fed Ex Cup finale

ATLANTA (AP) — Tiger Woods and Justin Rose share a one-stroke lead heading into today’s second round of the Tour Championship.

Woods shrugged off recent talk that he’s intimidated by Rory McIlroy and carded a 4-under-par 66 in yesterday’s opening round. Playing partner McIlroy saved par on the final hole for a 69.

Scott Piercy, Bo Van Pelt, Steve Stricker and Matt Kuchar carded 67s their first trip around the East Lake course in Atlanta.

Red Raiders’ Gillispie resigns

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Billy Gillispie’s reign as Texas Tech men’s basketball coach is over after one disappointing season. The 52-year-old Gillispie has resigned due to health reasons.

Gillispie’s departure comes less than a month after Texas Tech said it was looking into allegations of player mistreatment by the veteran coach and that it had reported practice-time violations to the NCAA. Chris Walker is in charge until the Red Raiders name an interim coach.

Gillispie recently spent six days in a Lubbock hospital, and doctors later ordered him to avoid stress for 30 days.

He coached one year at Texas Tech, finishing the 2011-12 season with an 8-23 record and one Big 12 victory.

FOOTBALL: Week Four Preview

It’s homecoming night at North Platte High. The Bulldogs hope to begin district play on a high note and earn their first win as they host Fremont. North Platte has beaten Fremont in each of the past three seasons. The Tigers come to town with a 1-3 record and a pass-heavy offense. This could be a high scoring affair. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action from Bauer Field at Memorial Stadium, with the pregame show at 6:30 and the kickoff at 7.

The St. Patrick’s Irish also play their homecoming game tonight. They put their 4-0 record on the line as Wood River comes to town. The visitors are 1-2 on the season. St. Pat’s has outscored their opponents by the total of 182-25 this season.

Hershey hopes this is the week their offense clicks as they look to get back on the winning track, hosting Bridgeport. Hershey’s defense has limited their opponents to 14 points in each of the last two games, but they’ve mustered just one touchdown in each game and have dropped to 1-2 on the season. Bridgeport is also 1-2, but they’ve allowed 77 points over the last two weeks. This may be the breakout week the Panthers have waited for.

Maxwell is hoping to snap a two-game losing streak as they hit the road to take on Paxton. The third-quarter blues have hurt the Wildcats in losses to Elm Creek and Arapahoe, but the Wildcats will hope their work on the bye week will chase those blues away. But the Tiger team they’re facing is 3-0 and looking dominant.

Sutherland is also traveling, heading up northwest to face Hemingford in their district opener. After being shutout 80-0 by Arapahoe last week, the winless Sailors are hoping they can make some strides this week against another unbeaten opponent.

Brady takes on Medicine Valley in an intriguing district opener. The Eagles opened their account on the winning side of the ledger last week, rolling over S-E-M. Now they take on the team that is the district favorite. The Raiders are 3-0 and are averaging well over 40 points per game.

Wallace hosts Hayes Center tonight. The Wildcats rolled over Loomis last week to move to 3-1.  They know a win over the Cardinals would stamp them as a legitimate district threat. The Cardinals are 2-2 after blowing out Southwest last week.

SOFTBALL: Bulldogs Rout Minutemaids

The North Platte Bulldogs blanked Lexington 8-0 in five innings in Lexington last night. Ashten Hernandez twirled a one-hit shutout, striking out nine Minutemaid batters. At the plate, Cheyenne Craghead drove in a pair of runs and Kaite Franzen, Sally Hengen and Sydney Standage each had an RBI. North Platte moves to 14-6 with the victory. They’re at the Lincoln Southeast Invite this Saturday.

Sally Hengen’s RBI single in the fifth inning brought home North Platte’s eighth run and made the mercy run rule possible. It’s the Play of the Game – click here to listen. Hengen RBI single 9-20

Rome Returns to Huskers; Former Husker Moore Makes Transfer Official

Sophomore defensive tackle Chase Rome is back with the Nebraska football program. Rome left the team last week with what were called ‘personal issues’ at the time. Head coach Bo Pelini says Rome has sorted those issues out and has been welcomed back to the squad. Rome has practiced all week with the team. He will be available to play this Saturday as the Huskers host Idaho State. Offensive tackle Tyler Moore will not be returning to the Husker program. Moore, who started four games and played in nine as a true freshman last year, left fall camp and returned home to Florida, where he enrolled in a junior college. He announced yesterday that he’d be continuing his college football career at the University of Florida.

Rockies Lose Sixth Straight as de la Rosa’s Return Spoiled

The Colorado Rockies bungled their way to a sixth straight defeat, falling 9-2 to the San Francisco Giants yesterday afternoon. In his first big league start since May 20 of last year, Rockies southpaw Jorge de la Rosa couldn’t make it out of the fourth inning, allowing seven runs. But two of those runs were unearned as the Rockies defense made a pair of errors behind him. Pablo Sandoval hit two home runs for the Giants, both off de la Rosa, and drove in four runs. The Rockies made a mess of their offense as well, recording 13 hits but stranding 10 runners on base. Jonathan Herrera and de la Rosa drove in runs in the losing effort. The Rockies return home for their final homestand of the season, opening a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight. First pitch is set for 7:10.

Maxwell Wildcat Sports Update – September 20

The Wildcat football team is back on the gridiron after their bye week, and ready for yet another tough game. Head coach Ryan Jones talks about what his team did during the bye and about the keys to the matchup against Paxton Friday night. The Lady Wildcat volleyball team is young and inexperienced, but they earned a massive win last week. Hear all about it in this week’s edition of the Maxwell Wildcats Sports Update!
