Monday Sports Day – NFL Player Dies of Apparent Suicide

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Police say a Tennessee Titans player has died of an apparent suicide.

Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis says officers found 25-year-old O.J. Murdock inside his car Monday morning with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The car was parked in front of Middleton High School, where Murdock attended school.

He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he later died.

Murdock started his college career at South Carolina but left the school and played for two years at Fort Hays State. He was signed by the Titans as an undrafted free agent a year ago, and spent the entire 2011 season on injured reserve after suffering a right Achilles injury. Murdock did not report to training camp over the weekend.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have signed linebacker Edgar Jones and placed defensive back Kyle McCarthy on injured reserve. Jones was with Baltimore the previous five seasons and saw action as both a linebacker and tight end.

McCarthy signed with Kansas City in February after two years in Denver. He injured his knee in practice on Saturday.

MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Milwaukee Brewers have fired bullpen coach Stan Kyles following another meltdown by its relievers.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Monday that the change was necessary to improve a bullpen that has recorded the most losses and blown saves in the major leagues.

Kyles had been the bullpen coach since 2009. He will be replaced in the interim by Lee Tunnel, who is in his fourth season with the Brewers as minor league pitching coordinator.

Brewers’ relievers have gone 15-26 with a 4.80 ERA this season. The Washington Nationals took advantage of the Brewers’ beleaguered bullpen Sunday in an 11-10 win in 11 innings.

Olympic Update – Day Four

The US women’s volleyball team is comprised of several players making their Olympic debuts, including former Husker Jordan Larson. They didn’t look inexperienced in their first game of these London Olympics, topping South Korea in four sets on Saturday. Today they’ll return to the floor at Earl’s Court for their second preliminary match against Brazil in what should be one of the best matches of the tournament. Tonight in prime time, you’ll see the medals awarded in the men’s gymnastics team competition. Team USA’s score was the best of the qualifying round by almost three full points, but they’ll see strong competition from China and Russia. Also tonight, you’ll watch gold medal competition in the pool in the men’s 200 meter free and 100 meter backstroke, the women’s 100 meter backstroke and 100 meter breaststroke, and men’s synchronized diving. Medals will also be awarded today in men’s shooting, men’s and women’s judo, and women’s fencing.

Huskers in London – Dagunduro, Maric Make Men’s Hoops Debuts

Aleks Maric as a Husker

The first Nebraska men’s basketball players to represent their countries in the Olympics debuted yesterday. For Ade Dagunduro and Nigeria, the result was the nation’s first-ever Olympic win, 60-56 over Tunisia. Aleks Maric and Australia weren’t as fortunate, as they dropped a 75-71 decision to Brazil. Dagunduro came off the bench to score six points and grab a rebound in nearly 17 minutes off the bench in Nigeria’s win. The former Husker guard was 1-of-5 shooting from the floor, but went 4-of-6 from the charity stripe, as Nigeria built a double-digit lead and held on in the final minutes against Tunisia. Maric had four points and two rebounds, hitting both of his shots from the floor, but played just eight minutes because of foul trouble. Both players are back in action Tuesday, as Nigeria faces Lithuania and Australia battles Spain.

Rockies Lose Third Straight

The Colorado Rockies had no chance of slowing down the National League’s hottest team. The Cincinnati Reds wrapped up a three-game sweep of the Rockies with a 7-2 win yesterday afternoon at Coors Field. Jonathan Sanchez’s second start in a Rockies uniform was even more underwhelming than his first. He gave up six runs on eight hits in four and a third innings of work, including back-to-back home runs by Drew Stubbs and Jay Bruce in the fifth that sent Sanchez to the showers. Offensively the Rockies got off to a fine start, with Josh Rutledge hitting a two-run home run in the first inning. It was the second career homer for the rookie shortstop, who was the only Rockie to have a multi-hit game. The Reds have now won ten straight games, while the Rockies have lost three straight and eleven of 15. The Rockies are off tonight before resuming their homestand with the first of three games against the St. Louis Cardinals tomorrow night.

Broncos Training Camp Report – First Day of Red Zone Drills

Sunday wasn’t Peyton Manning’s best day at Denver Broncos’ training camp, but the veteran QB still looked plenty sharp. Manning made several nice throws in traffic and none of his passes were picked off as the Broncos practiced in pads for the second straight day and did red zone drills for the first time. Manning is looking to get in sync with his young wide receivers. Eric Decker made some nice grabs but Demaryius Thomas showed why he has some work to do when a fastball from Manning bounced off his chest in the end zone. When the second-team offense took the field, it was rookie Brock Oswelier who assumed the controls. Broncos head coach John Fox says the competition to be Manning’s primary backup is still wide-open between Osweiler, Caleb Hanie, and Adam Weber. The Broncos return to the practice field today.

Olympic Update – Day 3

They’re being called the ‘Fab Five’, and they make their prime debut debut tonight on the third day of the XXX Olympiad. The United States women’s gymnastics team is the gold medal favorite and considered to be the best US team since the ‘Magnificent Seven’ who won gold in Atlanta in 1996. The preliminary team competition gets underway today in London. Also tonight in prime time, you’ll see four swimming finals: the women’s 100 meter butterfly and 400 meter free, and the men’s 100 meter breaststroke and the 4×100 free relay. The US men’s basketball team has accrued plenty of hype entering these Olympics, and they’ve been happy to stoke that hype by suggesting they might be even better than the original ‘Dream Team’. They make their debut in these Olympics today, taking on France, a team that features a number of NBA players including Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs. The defending Olympic champion US men’s volleyball team debuts today as well. Medal events in women’s cycling, women’s shooting, women’s diving, women’s archery, men’s fencing, and judo also highlight today’s competition.

Former Husker Busboom Joins Coaching Staff

Lincoln – Nebraska Head Coach John Cook announced on Friday the hiring of Louisville assistant and former Husker Dani Busboom to Nebraska’s volleyball staff. Busboom spent the past season with the Cardinals, helping them to a 24-9 record in 2011 including a trip to the semifinals at the Big East Conference Tournament.

“I’ve been waiting for the day to be able to offer a coaching position at Nebraska to one of our former players,” Cook said. “Dani has proven herself at two major Division I programs and as an assistant with USA Volleyball’s Select A2 Program. She has worked hard to put herself in position to be a Nebraska volleyball coach. I loved coaching Dani as a player, she is a winner. She played two different positions here, she has a passion for coaching, and I’m excited to work alongside her to help our team accomplish its goals.”

Busboom will take over for Dan Conners who resigned last week. Her responsibilities will include assisting Coach Cook with the setters, liberos and outside hitters, while Dan Meske will coach the middle blockers and coordinate the Huskers’ blocking defense.

“I could not be more excited to be a part of the Nebraska family again,” Busboom said. “Not only is it home for my husband and I, but it is arguably the best volleyball program in the country. Since I started a career in coaching, I have been hoping for the opportunity to compete for a National Championship again. There is no place I’d rather do that than at Nebraska. I am very thankful for the opportunity that Dr. Osborne and Coach Cook have given me and look forward to continuing the tradition of Nebraska volleyball.

“I loved my time at Louisville and it was one of the best learning experiences I could have had. Anne Kordes is an amazing coach, person and mentor. Louisville’s athletic department is top notch, and I will always be thankful for the experience I had there.”

Prior to her time at Louisville, Busboom was an assistant coach at Tennessee where she worked with the team’s setters, coordinated travel and equipment needs and ran the school’s summer volleyball camps.

“Rob Patrick gave me my first chance at coaching at Tennessee, and I very thankful for that,” Busboom said. “Tennessee is a great program, and I realized there I definitely wanted to make a career out of coaching.”

As a captain at Nebraska, Busboom moved from setter to libero in 2006 to help Nebraska’s defense and finished her career as one of only two players to rank among NU’s all-time leaders in both digs (1,281, second) and assists (2,873, eighth). She was a four-year starter for Cook, guiding NU to a 124-10 record, the best four-year mark in school history, three Big 12 titles, two NCAA finals appearances and a national title in 2006.

Busboom was considered the Big 12’s best libero in 2006, as she helped NU limit opponents to a Big 12-low .144 hitting percentage. She set Nebraska’s single-season digs record (580) in her first year as a libero, breaking the previous mark of 480 by Amanda McCormick in 2004. As a senior she reached double figures in digs in 32 of 34 matches, including 21 straight matches with at least 10 digs. She notched her best defensive performance at the NCAA semifinals against UCLA, totaling a career-high 29 digs, which ranks as the second-highest postseason performance in school history.

“One of my goals as being the head coach of Nebraska is to develop future coaches, especially players who come from our program,” Cook said. “I always tell them when they say they want to be coaches that they need to go away from Nebraska and see what else is out there and then come back.”

In addition to her accomplishments on the court, Busboom excelled off the court for the Huskers. She was a 2006 second-team academic All-District VII selection, while earning six Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll accolades and becoming a three-time first-team academic All-Big 12 honoree. She earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Nebraska in 2007.

Following her graduation, Busboom spent time with the U.S. Women’s National Training Team before working as a sales representative for an Omaha insurance company. She has worked as a sideline reporter for radio broadcasts of Nebraska volleyball matches on the Husker Sports Network and also as an assistant coach with USA Volleyball’s Select A2 Program. Dani and her husband, former Nebraska football player Lane Kelly, were married in the summer of 2010.

Olympic Update – Day Two

The showcase showdown in prime time tonight is the first of what will be several highly anticipated battles in the pool between American’s Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. The two will swim in the 400 meter individual medley. Phelps won eight gold medals at the 2008 Games in Beijing, but has since been surpassed in the opinions of many by Lochte for the title of ‘Greatest Swimmer in the World’. They’ll begin to settle that issue definitively on the first full day of Olympic competition. The first medals of the Olympics will be awarded today, in the men’s cycling road race. Other medals will be handed out in shooting, judo, archery, fencing and swimming events. The US women’s basketball team opens preliminary round play when they take on Croatia, and women’s soccer is back on the pitch for their second preliminary round game, facing Colombia. Former Husker Jordan Larson and the US volleyball team also makes their debut, taking on South Korea. Prime time coverage tonight on NBC also includes the men’s gymnastics team competition and the four finals in swimming – the men’s 400 IM and 400 freestyle, and women’s 400 IM and 4×100 relay.

Rockies Deal 2B Scutaro to San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Giants acquired veteran infielder Marco Scutaro from the Colorado Rockies in a trade for minor league infielder Charlie Culberson on Friday night.

Scutaro, who will bolster the infield for the Giants, was hitting .271 with four home runs and 30 RBIs in 95 games for the Rockies.

Scutaro joins his sixth major league team. He made his major league debut with the New York Mets in 2002.

Culberson was hitting .236 with 10 home runs and 53 RBIs in his first year at Triple-A. He appeared in six games with the Giants earlier in the year, hitting .136 with one RBI.
