DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) – Spain has advanced to another major soccer final, beating Portugal 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a scoreless draw at the European Championship.

UNDATED (AP) – Just when the New York Yankees were poised to run away with the American League East, their starting rotation took a major hit.

Andy Pettitte will be out about two months after breaking his left fibula near the ankle when hit by a line drive in the fifth inning of the Yankees’ fifth consecutive win, 5-4 over Cleveland. The injury came hours after the Yanks announced No. 1 starter CC Sabathia was placed on the disabled list with a strained groin. The team already is playing without all-time saves leader Mariano Rivera due to a knee injury.

First Nationals Dodge Rain, Hershland Rally in Win

In a rain-shortened affair at Bill Wood Field, the North Platte First Nationals seniors defeated Hershland 11-7 in five innings last night. The high-scoring affair saw the visitors jump out to a first inning lead, but North Platte responded in a big way to take an 8-4 lead after three innings of play. Hershland tallied three times in their half of the fourth to cut the First Nationals lead to one, but North Platte added insurance before the inclement weather moved in and brought the game to a halt. The win is the fourth in five games for the First Nationals, who improve their record to 17-12 on the season. They travel to Lincoln for a tournament this weekend. Prior to the game, the Leadership Awards for the North Platte legion program were handed out. Ty Brockmoller from the juniors and Taylor Williams from the seniors were honored.

Rookie Rockie Hurler Shelled in Debut Loss (LISTEN LIVE TODAY on ESPN Radio 1410)

The eleventh different starting pitcher to take the mound for the Colorado Rockies this season met a familiar fate in an 11-5 loss to the Washington Nationals at Coors Field last night. Edwar Cabrera, called up from AA to make his major league debut, was knocked out of the game in the third inning after giving up seven runs on five hits, including three home runs. The Rockies and Nationals each had 14 hits, but until scoring two runs apiece in the eighth and ninth innings, the Rockies were never competitive in the game. Marco Scutaro drove in a pair of runs and Carlos Gonzalez added two hits and an RBI to highlight the Rockies’ offensive output. The Rockies try for a series split with the Nationals this afternoon in Denver. ESPN Radio 1410 will have the action, with pregame coverage at 1:30 and the first pitch at 2:10.

Swim Trials: Phelps Gets Past Lochte in 200 Free

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Michael Phelps had reduced his workload at the U.S. Olympic trials by scratching the 100-meter freestyle.

His coach, Bob Bowman, announced the scratch Wednesday night shortly after Phelps won the 200 free, beating Ryan Lochte in their second head-to-head matchup of the Trials.

Phelps entered the 100 free mainly as insurance in case he failed to qualify for one of his better events. He actually swam in the preliminaries four years ago to ensure himself a spot on the 400 freestyle relay, but Bowman felt that wasn’t necessary this time. Phelps had the second-fastest seed time coming into the trials and he’s been on the 400 free relay at the last two Olympics.

Phelps still has four events left in Omaha, including the 200 individual medley, 200 butterfly and 100 fly. He’ll likely scratch the 200 backstroke, which begins Friday.

Wednesday Sports Day – News From Olympic Swimming, NASCAR

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Missy Franklin has advanced to the semifinals of the 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials.

The 17-year-old from Colorado had the third-fastest qualifying time in Wednesday morning’s preliminaries at 1 minute, 58.62 seconds. Allison Schmitt and Dana Vollmer, both already on the U.S. team for the London Games, were first and second.

Schmitt led the way in 1:58.02 and Vollmer touched in 1:58.34. Also moving on to the evening semifinals was Elizabeth Beisel, who was 13th.

Katie Hoff is looking doubtful to make her third straight Olympics after finishing 20th. Her time of 2:00.58 was 0.32 seconds off the 16th and last spot for the semis. She failed to advance out of the 400 free prelims a day earlier. Her only remaining event is the 800 free.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Roush Fenway Racing has made its choice between two young drivers in need of additional seat time.

The team has picked Ricky Stenhouse Jr. over Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne to replace Matt Kenseth in the Sprint Cup Series next season. Kenseth is leaving at the end of the season.

Roush Fenway president Steve Newmark says Stenhouse was selected because he’ll have three full seasons in the Nationwide Series when he makes the move.

Bayne has not run a full season since 2010. He is currently running a limited Cup schedule for The Wood Brothers, the team he took to Victory Lane in last year’s Daytona 500. He’s been slowed by sponsorship problems since.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Utah and Michigan will play a home-and-home series in football beginning with a game in Ann Arbor in 2014.

The first game of the series is scheduled for Sept. 20, 2014, in Michigan Stadium. Utah will host Michigan in Rice-Eccles Stadium on Sept. 3, 2015, the season-opener for both.

The 2015 game will mark the second time the two teams have opened their season against each other. Utah opened its undefeated 2008 season with a 25-23 victory over the Wolverines.

The overall series is tied 1-1.

A plan was approved yesterday that will have a four-team playoff starting in the 2014 season with two semifinal games, followed by a championship game. The semifinals would be on Dec. 31 and/or Jan.1 with the first championship game slated for Jan. 12, 2015.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – NASCAR points leader Matt Kenseth is leaving Roush (rowsh) Fenway Racing at the end of the season. There was widespread speculation last weekend at Sonoma that Kenseth was leaving to join Joe Gibbs Racing, but Kenseth decline to discuss his future with the organization he has been with for all but one of his 452 career starts. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will be promoted to his seat in the Sprint Cup Series by Roush.
