Lochte Beats Phelps in First Head-to-Head Battle at Olympic Trials in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Ryan Lochte has won his first head-to-head showdown with Michael Phelps at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials.

The 27-year-old Floridian captured the 400-meter individual medley Monday night, taking command on the breaststroke leg and holding off Phelps in the freestyle for a time of 4 minutes, 7.06 seconds. Phelps claimed the second Olympic spot in 4:07.89.

Tyler Clary, who took second at last year’s world championships, won’t even get a chance to swim the event in London. He faded to third in 4:09.92.

Phelps won the 400 IM at the past two Olympics, but vowed to drop the grueling event after Beijing. In the past year, he brought it back — and now he’ll be swimming it again in London.

Third grand slam under way

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) – The fortnight at Wimbledon began today in Southwest London.

Defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) is first up on Centre Court. The top seed is taking on former No. 1 and French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Women’s top seed Maria Sharapova has the second match on the main show court.

Unseeded Venus Williams is on court against Russia’s Elena Vesnina.

Third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska (ahg-nee-ESH’-kuh rahd-VAHN’-skuh) of Poland has advanced to the second round with a straight sets victory.

Kim Clijsters (KLY’-sturz) and Roger Federer also are on the Day 1 schedule at the All England Club.
Red Sox trade Youkilis

UNDATED (AP) – The Boston Red Sox have traded infielder Kevin Youkilis (YOOK’-ih-lihs) to the Chicago White Sox for utilityman Brent Lillibridge and right-hander Zach Stewart.

Will Middlebrooks’ emergence in Boston made the 33-year-old Youkilis expendable after a successful 8 1/2-year run with the Red Sox. The versatile All-Star corner infielder is a career .286 hitter with 133 homers and 563 RBIs.

The AL Central-leading White Sox, who also receive cash in the deal, have been looking for a third baseman with Brent Morel plagued by back problems.

Also:

– The Red Sox have placed right-handed pitcher Clay Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list due to what manager Bobby Valentine calls a “gastrointestinal issue.” Valentine says Buchholz had gone to the hospital recently to deal with the problem and has not been with the team the past two days.

Sunday Sports Wrap

NEW YORK (AP)- Robinson Cano (kuh-NOH’) led off the eighth inning with his 16th home run and the New York Yankees captured two of three in their Subway Series by beating the Mets 6-5 Sunday night. The Yanks ended knuckleballer R.A. Dickey’s string of 44-and-two-thirds innings without an earned run by scoring four times in the third inning with Nick Swisher’s three-run homer the big hit.

BOSTON (AP) – Kevin Youkilis (YOOK’-ih-lihs) said farewell at Fenway Park on Sunday after hitting a triple in Boston’s 9-4 win over the Atlanta Braves helped by Cody Ross, who hit two homers and drove in five runs. Youkilis was traded to the Chicago White Sox for utilityman Brent Lillibridge and right-hander Zach Stewart after the game and received a warm ovation and a curtain call in his final game for the Red Sox.

NEW YORK (AP) – Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire has apologized to a fan for using a gay slur in response to a crude tweet in which the fan admonished the All-Star to “make up for this past season.”

The fan (at)BFerrelli tweeted his comment on Saturday and received a direct message containing an expletive and the slur from the account Twitter verifies as Stoudemire’s. BFerrelli, identified by the Daily News as Brian Ferrelli, posted a screen shot of the direct message. Direct messages can only be seen by the sender and the recipient.

Stoudemire apologized early Sunday, using another direct message that BFerrelli posted as a screen shot, saying “I apologize for what I said earlier. I just got off the plane and had time to think about it. Sorry bro!! No Excuses. Won’t happen again.”

Rockies Run Selves Out of Rally in Loss (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

A ninth-inning rally was thwarted by boneheaded baserunning as the Colorado Rockies fell to the Texas Rangers 4-2 in Arlington last night. Down 4-0 entering the ninth, the Rockies loaded the bases with nobody out. Marco Scutaro singled in a run and Carlos Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly made it a 4-2 game. But Scutaro was erased from the basepaths on a bizarre pickoff play and rundown. Scutaro had been ruled safe at second on the rundown, but he failed to stay on the base, allowing himself to be tagged out. Jason Giambi struck out to end the threat and the game. The Rockies have lost 14 of their last 17 ballgames. They finished interleague play with an appaling 2-13 record. The Rockies return home tonight to begin a four-game series with the Washington Nationals. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action tonight, with pregame coverage at 7:05 and the first pitch at 7:40.

CWS: Wade’s Pitching Brilliance Has Arizona One Win From Title

Game One of the College World Series final went to the Arizona Wildcats in decisive fashion. Konnor Wade tossed his second complete game gem of the series as the Wildcats knocked off the two-time defending champions South Carolina 5-1 in Omaha. Wade baffled the Gamecocks, allowing just six hits and striking out three. He became the first pitcher to throw multiple complete games in the same College World Series since Cal State-Fullerton’s Jason Windsor did it in 2004. Offensively, Arizona was sparked by Robert Refsnyder, whose two-run homer in the first gave Wade all the support he’d need. Alex Mejia, Seth Mejias-Brean, and Bobby Brown also drove in runs for Arizona. Game two is scheduled for 7 PM tonight. A Wildcats victory would bring them their first national championship in 26 years.

Thedford’s Chauncy Hesseltine won the saddle bronc event at the state final and will compete at nationals in that event and in bull riding. Wellfleet’s Jaden Clark also qualified for nationals in saddle bronc. Hershey’s Tucker White, along with partner Rhett Nelson, secured a spot in nationals in team roping.

Zharkov played 36 games for the Storm in the 2010-2011 season, tallying eight goals and three assists. LeBron James had 26 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists in an NBA Finals-clinching 121-106 rout of the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder.

And teammate Mike Miller went 7-of-8 from 3-point range en route to a 23-point performance.

Kevin Durant scored 32 points for the Thunder, who took Game 1 of the series and then dropped four straight.

Peralta appealing 8-game suspension…Beachy done for the season

UNDATED (AP) – Tampa Bay reliever Joel (joh-EHL’) Peralta has been suspended eight games for having pine tar on his glove.

Major League Baseball issued the penalty Thursday. Peralta has appealed, and pitched and gave up the go-ahead hit in a 5-2 Rays’ loss in Washington on Thursday night.

Peralta was ejected from Tuesday night’s game in Washington after umpires found pine tar on his mitt.
