CWS: Sea Wolves Eliminated, Arizona Seizes Control of Pool Play

The clock struck midnight for the Stony Brook Sea Wolves yesterday afternoon on the third day of play at the College World Series in Omaha. The Sea Wolves were eliminated in a 12-2 loss to Florida State. The Seminoles scored six runs in the second inning, five of which came after a two-out error, and cruised to victory. In the nightcap at TD Ameritrade Park, Arizona put themselves in the drivers seat in their pool with a 4-0 triumph over UCLA. Konnor Wade went the distance for a five-hit shutout, and the Wildcats backed him with a four-run fourth inning to knock off the number two national seed. Tonight’s action will see another team’s stay in Omaha come to an end, as Kent State battles Florida in the elimination game at 4 PM. The winner’s bracket matchup pits two-time defending champion South Carolina against Arkansas at 8 PM.

Miles Dismisses Hilliard From Team

Nebraska men’s basketball player Corey Hilliard Jr. has been dismissed from the program. Hilliard was arrested on suspicion of robbery on June 7, stemming from an incident on May 15 in which a female’s cell phone was stolen. He was arraigned on June 8 and released from jail five days later. Hilliard appeared in nine games as a true freshman in the 2011-2012 season, totaling nine points and two rebounds.

For Rockies, Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves… or Until Interleague Play Ends

Even if the Colorado Rockies had gotten a passable pitching performance, it wouldn’t have mattered in their eighth straight defeat. The Rockies mustered just three hits in the first eight innings of an 8-2 loss to the Oakland A’s at Coors Field. Rockies starting pitcher Alex White departed after just four innings, allowing four runs, though only two were earned on a day in which the Rockies did their struggling pitching no favors by making three errors. The Rockies remain the only team in the majors without a win in interleague play. They are 0-9 against American League teams so far. Another AL team lies ahead. The Rockies travel to Detroit for a three-game weekend series against the Tigers, which opens tonight. You can hear the game live on ESPN Radio 1410. Pregame coverage begins at 5:30 with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05.

First Nationals Head To Lincoln For Four in Two Days

The North Platte First Nationals will be tested this weekend with four games in Lincoln. Their trip opens this evening with a doubleheader against Lincoln Southeast at Sherman Field. On Saturday, they’ll play another double-dip with the first game against Lincoln Northeast and the finale against Lincoln East. First pitch tonight in the Star City is set for 5:30.

CWS: Cinderella Sea Wolves Open Tournament on Day One

The College World Series opens up tonight in Omaha with one of the tournament’s most unlikely qualifiers ever set to take the field. The Stony Brook Sea Wolves take on the UCLA Bruins in Game One today at 4 PM. UCLA was the number two national seed, while the Sea Wolves were a four seed in their regional. They are the first four seed to qualify for the College World Series since Fresno State in 2008. The Bulldogs, of course, won the national title that year. The nightcap at TD Ameritrade Park features Arizona taking on number three seed Florida State at 8 PM.

Huskers-Bruins Start Time Set

The Pac-12 conference announced the start time and broadcast information for Nebraska’s non-conference gridiron clash with UCLA. September 8’s contest in Los Angeles will be a prime-time game, kicking off at 6:30 central time and broadcast nationally on FOX. It’s the Huskers’ fourth prime-time game scheduled for the 2012 season. Nebraska now knows the start times for seven of their twelve games this coming season, with the other games to have their start times announced six to twelve days in advance.
