Rockies Open Series Against Streaking Reds (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)
The Colorado Rockies open a three-game series in Cincinnati against the Reds tonight. The Rockies have slumped through a miserable May that has seen them lose 16 of 20 games. But the team hopes to have turned a corner after their last game, an 8-4 victory over the Marlins in Miami that snapped a six-game losing streak. Troy Tulowitzki homered twice and drove in seven runs in the three-game series as he tries to snap out of a personal month-long slump. Tonight, the Rockies send Christian Friedrich to the mound for his fourth career start. The lefty gave up eight earned runs in his last outing Saturday against Seattle, his first start at Coors Field. Cincinnati counters with their ace, Johnny Cueto. ESPN Radio 1410 has all the action tonight, with pregame coverage at 5:30 and the first pitch scheduled for 6:10.
Warren, Broncos in Midst of Salary Dispute
As the Denver Broncos begin voluntary OTAs at their Dove Valley facility in suburban Denver, defensive tackle Ty Warren is not with the team. Warren and the Broncos are locked in a contract dispute, stemming from the Broncos’ desire for Warren to take a paycut. The Broncos signed the veteran to a two-year contract last season, but Warren was injured in training camp and missed the entire season, the second season in a row that he’s missed due to injury. The Broncos want to cut the salary of the 31 year-old Warren, who is due to make $4 million in base salary this season after making $4 million in salary and bonuses last year. Warren would also likely face a reduced role for the Broncos, as the team has added to their depth at defensive tackle with free-agent signing of Justin Bannan and second-round draft pick Derek Wolfe.
Huskers Facing Elimination After Loss to Spartans
A furious ninth-inning rally came up just short for the Husker baseball team in the first round of the Big Ten tournament, as they fell to Michigan State 10-9. Trailing 10-2 into the ninth inning, Nebraska scored seven times, including five two-out runs, and had the tying run at third base. But Kale Kiser’s line drive was caught at second base to end the game. The Huskers must battle through the loser’s bracket of the double elimination tournament, starting with today’s game against Penn State. First pitch from Columbus, Ohio is set for 11:05.
Tulo Homers as Rockies Snap Skid
The embattled Colorado Rockies snapped a six-game losing skid last night with an 8-4 win over the Miami Marlins. In the first two games of their three game series in Miami, the Rockies took big early leads only to watch them slip away. Last night the script was flipped, as the Marlins took a 3-0 lead after two innings, only to see the Rockies score three times in the fourth to tie the game. Miami regained the lead with a run in their half of the fourth, but in the fifth the Rockies got an RBI single by Carlos Gonzalez and a three-run homer from Troy Tulowitzki to take the lead for good. Tulowitzki drove in four runs in total, giving him seven for the series. Alex White worked six strong innings for his first victory of the season. The Rockies are off today, traveling to Cincinnati, where they’ll open a weekend series against the Reds on Friday night.
