The Husker baseball team wraps up the home portion of their Big Ten schedule with a three-game series against Minnesota that begins tonight. The Huskers are hoping to snap a three-game losing streak in tonight’s series opener against the Golden Gophers, who sit a game above them in the Big Ten standings. These two foes have already met once this season – Nebraska beat Minnesota 10-3 back on March 4 in a non-conference game at the Dairy Queen Classic in Minneapolis. Freshman lefty Kyle Kubat takes the mound to start the series, the second straight week he’s received that assignment. Husker coach Darin Erstad has not yet named his starting pitchers for the second and third games of the series. Nebraska currently stands seventh in the Big Ten. The top six teams are invited to the conference tournament. First pitch tonight at Hawks Field is set for 6:35.

Friedrich Sparkles in Debut as Rockies Snap Losing Skid
A standout big league debut helped the Colorado Rockies snap a five-game losing streak as they defeated the San Diego Padres 6-2 in San Diego yesterday. The southpaw allowed just one earned run in six innings while striking out seven. He was backed by two RBI apiece from Chris Nelson and Wilin Rosario, whose two run double in the fifth inning put the Rockies in front to stay. Michael Cuddyer and Jason Giambi also drove in runs for the Rockies in the victory. The win helps the Rockies salvage a game in their three-game visit to San Diego. They’re off today before opening a three-game set in Los Angeles against the National League West Division leading Dodgers tomorrow night.

Huskers Routed by Blue Jays
The Husker baseball team fell behind early and never recovered in an 8-1 loss to Creighton last night at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha. Husker starting pitcher Tom Lemke allowed three runs in the first inning that would prove to be an opening act for a Blue Jay offensive assault that produced sixteen hits. Eight Blue Jay hurlers managed to scatter eight Husker hits, with an RBI single by Mike Pritchard in the third inning producing the Big Red’s only run. Pritchard extended his hitting streak to 25 games, which ties him for the third longest streak for a Husker since 1958, with his 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Creighton padded their lead with two runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh frame. The Huskers drop to 29-19 overall with their third straight loss. They host Minnesota in a three-game Big Ten series starting Friday.
