The Colorado Rockies got a good outing from a starting pitcher, but even that wasn’t enough to snap their now five-game losing streak as they fell to the San Diego Padres 3-1 last night in San Diego. Making his debut with the Rockies in 2012, pitcher Alex White pitched six and a third innings, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out five, but the Rockies failed to back him offensively despite nine hits. Todd Helton’s RBI single in the first inning produced the lone Rockies run. The Rockies will try and salvage a game in this three-game series this afternoon. Left-hander Christian Friedrich, the Rockies first round pick in 2008, will make his major league debut on the mound. ESPN Radio 1410 has the call of the game with the pregame show starting at 2:05 and first pitch at 2:35.

Nuggets Hold On to Force Game Six
The Denver Nuggets are still alive in the NBA playoffs. The Nuggets withstood a furious rally by Kobe Bryant to top the Los Angeles Lakers 102-99 in Los Angeles to force a Game Six in their first round series. The Nuggets led by as many as ten in the first half and claimed a 49-43 lead at the break. A 10-2 run to close the third quarter gave the Nuggets a 76-65 lead heading into the final twelve minutes. The Nuggets led by as many as 15 in the fourth quarter, but Bryant erupted late to pull the Lakers within three in the final seconds. Bryant and Ramon Sessions missed tying threes as the buzzer sounded. The Nuggets were led by Andre Miller’s 24 points and 8 assists, and Javale McGee’s 21 points and 14 rebounds. Rockies Lose Fourth Straight (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)
The Colorado Rockies losing streak is at four games after a 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres in San Diego last night in the first game of the Rockies’ eight-game road trip. Rockies starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz continued the trend of starters exiting early, though his exit was not due to poor performance but due to getting hit with a line drive in the right leg in the second inning. Pomeranz departed after allowing three runs in three innings when his leg stiffened, but he did produce one highlight, hitting his first big league home run in the top of the third. Carlos Gonzalez also drove in a run for the Rox in the loss. The Rockies and Padres are back at it again tonight, with Alex White set to make his first start of the season on the mound for Colorado. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with pregame coverage at 8:30 and first pitch at 9:05.

GM Xanders, Broncos Part Ways
Brian Xanders is out as the Denver Broncos’ general manager after four seasons with the team. The Broncos and Xanders mutually agreed to part ways yesterday, ending a tenure that began when former head coach Mike Shanahan hired Xanders as the team’s assistant general manager after the 2008 draft. When Josh McDaniels took over as Broncos head coach in January 2009, he promoted Xanders to general manager, a post he remained in after John Fox took over as head coach last year. Though Xanders had the general manager title, he never had the final say in player personnel decisions, with John Elway overseeing football operations since 2011. The Broncos agreed to let Xanders go to pursue an opportunity as a general manager elsewhere. Elway says the Broncos will not hire anybody to formally fill the general manager position.

Husker Baseball Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader
The Husker baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Indiana in Bloomington yesterday afternoon. In Game One, the Huskers squandered an early two-run lead in a 7-5 loss. Pat Kelly and Chad Christensen homered for the Big Red, but an error and five walks by Husker pitchers in the game proved costly. The nightcap belonged to the Hoosiers as they won by a 9-6 score. Nebraska again took the early lead, but the Hoosier bats battered starting pitcher Zach Hirsch en route to a 6-1 lead after two innings. Cory Burleson drove in four runs to try and get the Huskers back in the game, but they could not get over the hump. The losses drop the Huskers to an even 9-9 in Big Ten conference play and 29-18 overall. Before resuming conference play with a home series against Minnesota this weekend, the Huskers visit Creighton tomorrow night.

The Rockies hit the road for an eight-game trip starting tonight with the first of three games in San Diego against the Padres. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with pregame coverage at 8:30 and first pitch at 9:05.
