Rockies Late Rally Falls Short (LISTEN LIVE TODAY on ESPN Radio 1410)

For the second time in three days, a dramatic late rally fell short for the Colorado Rockies, as they fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-6 at Coors Field. Rockies starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin allowed the first four batters of the game to score and allowed seven runs total to put the Rockies behind 7-0 after four and a half innings. But the Rockies clawed back, starting with a two-run homer by Carlos Gonzalez in the sixth. Tyler Colvin added a two-run shot as part of a three-run seventh, and a Todd Helton sac fly in the eighth made it a one-run game, but Gonzalez struck out with the tying run on third to end the game. The Rockies and Dodgers play the rubber game of their three-game series in Denver this afternoon. ESPN Radio 1410 has all the action, with pregame coverage starting at 1:30 and the first pitch at 2:10.

Storm Pick Six in USHL’s Futures Draft

The Tri-City Storm selected six players in last night’s United States Hockey League Futures draft. The Storm traded down from third to seventh in the first round, acquiring a first-round entry draft pick in the deal, and used the seventh pick to select defenseman Kevin Kerr from Bensalem, Pennsylvania. They also owned the 15th overall pick, and tabbed center Dylan Pavelek from Marysville, Michigan in that slot. Center Joshua Gabriel, from Lancaster, New York, was Tri-City’s second round pick. After sitting out the third round, the Storm picked right wing Will Harrison from Springfield, Virginia in the fourth round; defenseman Travis Brown from Otsego, Minnesota in the fifth; and goaltender Jake Kielly from Eden Prarie, Minnesota in the sixth. The Futures draft is comprised of the top 15 or 16 year old players, who may not make full Storm debuts until the 2013-2014 seasons.

Nuggets Drop Game Two to Lakers

The Denver Nuggets had no answer for Kobe Bryant and the rest of the Los Angeles Lakers, and now find themselves in a 2-0 hole in their first-round Western Conference playoff series. The Lakers topped the Nuggets 104-100 at Staples Center last night. While the Nuggets were more competitive in Game Two than in their Game One defeat, they still couldn’t slow down the Lakers, especially Bryant, who poured in a game-high 38 points, and Andrew Bynum, who added 27 points. The Nuggets were led by Ty Lawson, who shook off a disappointing performance in the opener to score 25 points and hand out seven assists. Denver trailed by as many as 19 points, but did go on a 12-3 run late in the fourth quarter to get close before the Lakers closed the deal. The series shifts to Denver for Game Three on Friday night.

The North Platte Lady Bulldog soccer team made it look easy with a 7-1 victory over Fremont in semifinal action in the A-5 district tournament at Bauer Field yesterday. The ninth-ranked Lady Bulldogs advance to a showdown with Lincoln Southwest, who blanked Lincoln Northeast 6-nil in the other semifinal. Wednesday’s game is scheduled for a 5 PM start. The Bulldog boys open district play at Millard West against the top-seeded hosts this afternoon.

Bullpen Big in Rockies Win (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

An embattled Colorado Rockies bullpen showed their mettle in working out of a major jam that preserved a victory last night, as the Rockies topped the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 at Coors Field. Two RBI apiece for Troy Tulowitzki and Ramon Hernandez and six strong innings from Juan Nicasio gave the Rockies a 5-2 lead into the seventh, but the Dodgers loaded the bases with nobody out. The bullpen came to the rescue, as Esmil Rogers struck out the league’s leading hitter Matt Kemp, Rex Brothers fanned Andre Ethier, and Edgmer Escalona got Juan Rivera to pop out to end the threat. The Rockies snap a two-game losing streak with the win. Game two of the series between the Rockies and Dodgers in Denver is tonight, and you can hear it here on ESPN Radio 1410, with pregame coverage at 7:05 and the first pitch at 7:40.

Sophomore RB Green to Transfer

The Husker football program released a statement yesterday regarding the transfer of sophomore running back Aaron Green. Green, a five-star recruit who rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns as a true freshman last year, will look to continue his college football career closer to his hometown of San Antonio. The one-sentence statement confirmed that head coach Bo Pelini has given Green permission to look at other schools.

In a Hole After Ugly Opener, Nuggets Face Lakers in Game Two Tonight

The Denver Nuggets hope to rebound after a dispiriting game one performance in their first round playoff matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Nuggets were throttled 103-88 in Los Angeles in Game One on Sunday. Denver will need more production from leading scorer Ty Lawson, who was held to just seven points in the defeat. Game Two tips off tonight at Staples Center at 9:30 PM.

Edwards Shares Pitcher of the Week Honors

Husker sophomore pitcher Tatum Edwards was named the Big Ten’s co-Pitcher of the Week for her performance last weekend in Nebraska’s two-game home sweep of Michigan State. In game two of Saturday’s doubleheader, Edwards hurled a five-hit shutout, striking out six, to earn her second career conference Pitcher of the Week honor. Edwards shares the honors with Illinois’ Pepper Gay. The Huskers have this week off.

Huskers Best Blue Jays Again

The Husker baseball team made it two for two against their in-state rivals with a 4-1 win over Creighton at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha last night. Eight Husker pitchers combined for a three-hitter, with Ryan Hander’s two scoreless frames starting the game and Travis Huber’s scoreless ninth earning him his seventh save of the season. The Big Red struck in the first inning with an RBI triple by Richard Stock, and tacked on another run in the second inning on an RBI single from Blake Headley. Creighton cut the deficit in half with a run in the sixth inning, but in the top of the eighth, a Rich Sanguinetti single scored a run, and an error on the play scored another to give the Huskers breathing room. Nebraska moves to 27-15 on the season with the victory. They open a three-game home series with Cal State Bakersfield Friday night.

Husker Football Scheduled For Three Night Games in Conference Play

The Husker football team will play under the lights at least three times in the 2012 Big Ten Conference season. Three of the Big Red’s first four games in Big Ten play are scheduled for prime time. Nebraska will host night games against Wisconsin on September 29 and Michigan on October 27, and play at Ohio State at night on October 6. The Big Ten and ESPN announced 14 prime time games yesterday. 2012 will mark the seventh consecutive season in which Nebraska will play at least two home games at night. The Huskers have an all-time record of 35-5 at night at Memorial Stadium, including nine straight victories. There remains a chance that Nebraska’s non-conference home game against UCLA on September 8 may also be scheduled for a night-time kickoff, but that decision will be made by the Pac-12 Conference for their TV package.
