Broncos Show Interest in Asante Samuel, But Trade Talks Cool
The Denver Broncos were reportedly in talks to bolster their secondary, but discussions that would have brought four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel from the Philadelphia Eagles to Denver have settled down. The Denver Post reports the Broncos no longer believe they can acquire Samuel, even though they made two separate trade offers to the Eagles, one involving a late-round draft pick, the other involving an unnamed player. The Broncos added a cornerback earlier this offseason with the signing of former New Orleans Saint Tracy Porter to a one-year deal, but are still looking to add depth to the position after they released Andre Goodman, who started opposite Champ Bailey last year. Several other teams have talked to the Eagles about acquiring the 31 year-old Samuel before next week’s NFL Draft.
Rox Take Rubber Game Over Padres, Move Back to .500
Juan Nicasio’s amazing comeback story saw him return to the win column last night in the Colorado Rockies’ 8-4 victory over the San Diego Padres last night. Nicasio pitched into the seventh inning in earning his first win since suffering career-threatening head and neck injuries last August. He was backed offensively by a five-run second inning, with reserve infielder Jonathan Herrera’s two-run homer the big blow. Michael Cuddyer would add a two-run jack of his own later in the game, and Chris Nelson also drove in two runs in the winning effort. In taking the rubber game of the series with the Padres, the Rockies wrapped up a 5-4 homestand and moved back to .500 mark on the season at 6-6. They have a travel day today and open a six-game road trip with the first of three contests in Milwaukee against the Brewers on Friday night.
Hagemann Outduels Elsasser as Husker Softball Tops UNO in Extras
The Husker softball team had their hands full with their newest in-state Division I rival, but scratched out a run in the eighth inning to defeat Nebraska-Omaha 1-0 in Omaha yesterday evening. Taylor Edwards hit a two-out single that scored Mattie Fowler with the game’s only run, spoiling the efforts of UNO ace Dana Elsasser, who went the distance and scattered seven hits while striking out three. Her counterpart in the circle for the Huskers, Ashley Hagemann, was spectacular in victory, hurling a shutout and allowing just four hits while striking out 17 Maverick hitters. The victory was Nebraska’s second one-run win over UNO in as many meetings this season. The Huskers improve their record to 27-16 with the win. Next up is a three-game Big Ten road series at Ohio State this Saturday and Sunday.
Nuggets Streak Stopped in Home Loss to Clippers
A former Denver Nugget came back to haunt his old mates in a 104-98 Nuggets loss to the Los Angeles Clippers at the Pepsi Center last night. Kenyon Martin’s tip-in of a Chris Paul miss with 27 seconds to play gave the Clippers a 98-96 lead, and Martin’s block of a Ty Lawson’s layup on the ensuing trip down court preserved their lead for good. Lawson would end up leading the Nuggets with 24 points on the night. Al Harrington added 14 points off the bench, and four other Nuggets players had 12 points apiece. Paul’s 21 points led the Clippers in their victorious effort. The loss snaps Denver’s two-game winning streak, and combined with Dallas’s win, it drops them back to seventh place in the Western Conference. The Nuggets visit the Phoenix Suns in a crucial battle for playoff positioning on Saturday night.
Moyer Makes History in Rockies Win (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)
Colorado Rockies pitcher Jamie Moyer made history last night in Denver. Moyer pitched seven strong innings and became the oldest starting pitcher in major league history to win a game in the Rockies’ 5-3 victory over the San Diego Padres. The 49-year, 150-day old Moyer scattered six hits and allowed two unearned runs in picking up career victory number 268. In support of the lefty’s efforts, Dexter Fowler clouted a two-run homer, his second of the season, and Wilin Rosario drove in a pair of runs. Rafael Betancourt worked into some trouble in the ninth inning but wriggled off the hook for his third save. The Rockies move to 5-6 on the season and go for a series win over the Padres tonight, with Juan Nicasio on the mound against San Diego’s Clayton Richard. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with pregame coverage at 7:05 and first pitch at 7:40.

Storm Eliminated From Playoffs
A valiant comeback effort fell short for the second time in two nights, and the Tri-City Storm’s season is over. The Storm could not dig out of a three-goal first period hole in a 3-2 loss to the Waterloo Black Hawks in Game 2 of their best of three USHL playoff series. Kenny Brooks scored his first career playoff goal 33 seconds into the second period for the Storm to bring them to within 3-1, and then duplicated his scoring feat at the 2:17 mark of the third period to make it a one-goal game. But despite a scrambling effort late in the game, the Storm were unable to find the equalizing goal. Goaltender Adam Wilcox stopped 28 of 31 shots in the losing effort. The Storm are eliminated from the Clark Cup Playoffs with the loss, while Waterloo advances to take on the Omaha Lancers in the USHL’s Western Conference semifinals.
Huskers Gain Fourth 2013 Commitment
The Husker football team secured the fourth member of their recruiting class of 2013 with the commitment of defensive end A.J. Natter. Natter, from Milton, Wisconsin, is the top rated player from the state. Rivals.com rates him as a three-star prospect. He gave his verbal commitment to the Husker coaching staff after visiting over the weekend. Natter is the second player to commit to the class of 2013 in the past week. Lincoln Southwest linebacker Josh Banderas committed last Thursday.
Guthrie Shelled as Rockies Lose (Listen Live TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)
The Colorado Rockies couldn’t make up for another shaky starting pitching performance in a 7-1 loss to the San Diego Padres at Coors Field last night. Jeremy Guthrie was able to give a tired bullpen some much needed rest by pitching seven innings for the Rox, but they were not effective ones, as he gave up six runs, including five in the first four innings, on nine hits. Meanwhile, Padres starting pitcher Cory Luebke cruised, allowing just one run in his seven innings of work. Tyler Colvin’s RBI single in the second inning produced the only Rockies offense. Game two of the three game series between the Padres and Rockies is tonight. Jamie Moyer takes the mound for the Rockies, opposed by San Diego’s Anthony Bass. ESPN Radio 1410 has all the action, with the pregame show getting underway at 7:05 and the first pitch at 7:40.
