Scheffert Named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Nebraska third baseman Josh Scheffert was named the Big Ten Conference co-Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. Scheffert was instrumental in Sunday’s doubleheader sweep over Ohio State, as he hit a tie-breaking solo homer in the eighth inning of the first game and homered again and drove in seven runs in the nightcap. Scheffert was 7-for-14 with three homers in the three game series against the Buckeyes. The Huskers await a visit from Big Ten leaders Purdue this weekend.

The Denver Nuggets came up with perhaps their biggest win of the season, beating the Houston Rockets for the second time in as many nights in a 105-102 victory in Houston. With the win and Dallas’s loss in Utah, the Nuggets move to sixth place in the Western Conference standings and earn the tiebreaker over Houston. Arron Afflalo led the Nuggets with 26 points, and Ty Lawson chipped in 25 points. The Nuggets host the Los Angeles Clippers tomorrow night.

Storm Drop Game One in Clark Cup Playoff Series

The Tri-City Storm are on the brink of elimination from the USHL’s Clark Cup Playoffs after a 6-4 loss to the Waterloo Black Hawks in Game 1 of their best-of-three playoff series. Tim Bonner and Nick Lappin scored first period goals for the Storm and the game was even at two goals apiece after one, but three second-period goals by the Black Hawks doomed the Storm. Lappin and Brian Sinz would score in the third for Tri-City. Game two is set for tonight in Waterloo. The puck drops at 7:05.

Huskers Sweep Doubleheader For First Conference Road Series Win Since ’08

The Husker baseball team earned their first conference road series win since 2008 with a doubleheader sweep of Ohio State yesterday. After losing in the series opener on Friday night, the Huskers played longball to open Sunday’s double dip. Kale Kiser and Kash Kalkowski hit two-run home runs, and Josh Scheffert’s solo homer in the eighth inning broke a tie and gave the Big Red a 5-4 win. Scheffert would lead the offense in a lopsided 17-9 victory in the nightcap, as he homered and drove in a career-high seven runs. Zach Hirsch worked six strong innings to get the victory in the second game, allowing just two runs and striking out two. The Huskers stopped Ohio State’s seven-game winning streak and moved ahead of them in Big Ten play in the process. They are now 7-5 in conference play and 25-13 overall.

Rockies Fail to Complete Sweep, Host Padres Tonight (LISTEN LIVE ON ESPN RADIO 1410)

The Colorado Rockies set a Major League record last season for consecutive losses in Sunday games. They’re off on the wrong foot on Sundays this season as well. The Rockies fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2 at Coors Field yesterday afternoon, failing to complete the home sweep of the defending NL West division champs. Rockies starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz struggled in his season debut. The young southpaw allowed five runs in four and two-thirds innings to take the loss. Troy Tulowitzki and Tyler Colvin drove in a run for the Rockies in the losing effort. The Rockies are 4-5 on the season and 0-2 on Sundays. They begin a three-game series against the San Diego Padres in Denver tonight. ESPN Radio 1410 will have the action, with pregame coverage at 7:05 and the first pitch at 7:40.

Biggs Commits to Husker Hoops

As expected, former Omaha Central and Seward County Community College star Deverell Biggs verbally committed to the Husker men’s basketball program on Sunday, making him the first commitment for new Husker head coach Tim Miles. Biggs joins high school seniors Benny Parker and Shavoun Shields, who were recruited by previous head coach Doc Sadler, as members of the Husker hoops class of 2012.

Storm Set to Open Playoff Series at Waterloo

The Tri-City Storm head into the start of the United States Hockey League playoffs tonight on a high note after defeating Sioux Falls 3-2 in a shootout in their regular season finale Saturday night. Tonight the Storm take on the Waterloo Black Hawks in game one of a best-of-three first round series, with all three games to be played in Waterloo. The Storm lost three of the four regular season meetings with the Black Hawks. The puck drops tonight at 7:05.

Lincoln SW Standout Banderas Commits to Huskers

The Husker football program received their third commitment to the recruiting class of 2013 – and he’s no stranger to the city or the Big Red tradition. Josh Banderas, a linebacker from Lincoln Southwest High School, pledged to the Huskers yesterday. Banderas, who led the Silverhawks with 127 tackles last season, rates as one of Rivals.com’s Top 250 seniors. His dad, Tom, was a tight end at Nebraska from 1985 to 1987.

Rockies Lose Rubber Game to Giants, Host Arizona Tonight (LISTEN LIVE on ESPN Radio 1410)

The Colorado Rockies were once again their own worst enemy yesterday, as unearned runs proved to be the difference in a 4-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field. The Rockies were trailing 2-0 into the sixth inning when center fielder Dexter Fowler dropped a routine fly-ball to start the frame. Two runs would come into score after two outs were recorded in the inning, meaning neither run was charged as earned to Rockies starting pitcher Jamie Moyer. At the plate, the Rockies were no-hit for five and a third innings by Giants hurler Madison Bumgarner, but nearly rallied in the ninth, scoring a run and loading the bases before the final out was made. The Rockies begin a three-game series at home against Arizona tonight. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with pregame coverage at 7:05 and the first pitch at 7:40.

Huskers Open Series at Ohio State

Nebraska’s first venture out on the road in Big Ten play did not go smoothly, as they dropped two out of three games to Northwestern two weekends ago. They’ll hope to fare better in their second conference road trip beginning tonight in Columbus with the first of three games against Ohio State. The Huskers and Buckeyes enter this series entangled in a three-way tie for second place in the Big Ten. They’re even with Indiana with identical 5-4 conference records. The Huskers defeated Creighton on Tuesday to move their overall record to 23-12. The Buckeyes have won six straight, including a sweep of Minnesota last weekend. Nebraska will send lefty Tyler King to the mound tonight, followed by Brandon Pierce Saturday and Zach Hirsch on Sunday. First pitch for tonight’s series opener is set for 5:35.
