Former Omaha Central Star Biggs to Visit Lincoln

Nebraska men’s basketball coach Tim Miles hopes to secure his first commitment since taking the reins of the program last month. Junior college guard Deverell Biggs will come to Lincoln for his official visit this weekend. The former Omaha Central standout played last season at Seward County Community College in Kansas and was named an NJCAA 1st-team All-American. Miles does have three other players committed from Doc Sadler’s recruiting efforts.

Pelini Says Expect ‘Basic’ Schemes in Spring Game; Denies Interest in Arkansas Job

Spring practice continued for the Husker football team yesterday afternoon, as head coach Bo Pelini’s charges worked out in full pads outdoors. Pelini spoke to the media after the practice session and said not to expect anything too exotic from his offense or his defense in Saturday’s spring game. “We’re going to be as basic as you can get,” Pelini said. “We’re not going to be running our full game and stuff on either side of the football. It’s just going to be basic football, line up and play. We’re looking to be as basic as we can possibly be and still get a good evaluation of our guys and how they execute some of the base things.” Pelini also vigorously denied any interest in the newly vacant Arkansas job, calling Nebraska a ‘destination job’ and saying he’s happy to be in Lincoln. The Huskers’ practice today is their last one before the scrimmage Saturday.

Rockies Rout Giants With 22-Hit Barrage

A wild night at Coors Field saw the Colorado Rockies snap out of their early-season offensive funk in a big way. The Rockies blasted 22 hits in a 17-8 win over the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field. The offensive fireworks started early, as the Rockies jumped out to a 6-0 lead and chased Giants ace Tim Lincecum from the game in the third inning. The Giants would return the favor, knocking Rockies starter Jeremy Guthrie out in a seven-run fourth that gave them the lead. But the Rockies responded immediately with three runs in the fourth and then a seven-run frame of their own in the fifth. The Rockies snap a three-game losing streak with the victory, and look for a series win over the Giants this afternoon. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with pregame coverage at 1:30 and first pitch at 2:10.

Storm To Rest Regulars in Final Regular Season Games

The Tri-City Storm enter the final weekend of the USHL’s regular season knowing that they have more hockey still to play. The Storm clinched a playoff berth last weekend, and with the playoffs beginning on Monday, the team will look to rest some of their regulars in road contests against Waterloo and Sioux City this Friday and Saturday. Storm head coach Josh Hauge says it will be a good opportunity for younger players to get some valuable ice time. Tri-City is locked into the sixth seed in the Western Conference. Their first-round opponent is yet to be determined.

Keller, Huskers Hold Off Creighton

The Husker baseball team, led by a magnificent pitching performance from Jon Keller, claimed a 5-3 win over Creighton at Hawks Field last night. The sophomore right-hander went a career high eight innings to earn the victory, allowing two runs on four hits. Keller struck out six batters in earning his fourth win of the season. The Huskers did all their scoring in the third and fourth innings off of Blue Jay reliever Nick Musac. Kash Kalkowski singled in Rich Sanguinetti in the third to open the scoring, and the Huskers used four hits and an error to push across four more runs in the fourth, with Chad Christensen’s two-run single capping off the attack and providing the winning runs. The win moves the Huskers to 23-12 overall, while Creighton falls to 14-16. The Big Red visits Ohio State for a three-game series this weekend.

Rockies Ready For Game Two With San Francisco (LISTEN LIVE on ESPN Radio 1410)

After an ugly performance in their home opener, the Colorado Rockies hope their second home game goes more smoothly tonight. The Rockies look to snap a three-game losing streak in game two of their series against the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field. A 7-0 loss on Monday afternoon saw the Rockies embarrassed in front of a sellout crowd. Tonight, they’ll have the tall task of rebounding against Giants ace Tim Lincecum. The two-time Cy Young Award winner did struggle in a loss in his first start of the season. The Rockies will counter on the mound with Jeremy Guthrie, who earned the win with his seven strong innings on Opening Day in Houston. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action from Denver tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:05, with first pitch set for 7:40.

Hagemann Named Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week

Nebraska pitcher Ashley Hagemann was named the Big Ten co-pitcher of the week for her performance in a weekend sweep of Illinois. In the series opener Friday, Hagemann hurled her first career no-hitter. She followed that up with two scoreless innings of relief in the second game and then threw a two-hitter in the series finale on Saturday. Hagemann and the Huskers host Creighton tonight at 6 PM.

Storm’s Peterson Commits to Alaska-Fairbanks

Tri-City Storm defenseman JD Peterson announced his commitment to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks yesterday, becoming the eleventh Storm player committed to a Division I school. Peterson is in his second season in the USHL and first with the Storm. In 55 games this season, the Orange, California native has two goals and 12 assists. The playoff-bound Storm wrap up their regular season with games in Waterloo Friday and Sioux Falls Saturday.

Huskers Open Final Week of Spring Practice

With the spring game set for Saturday at Memorial Stadium, the Husker football team took to the practice field yesterday for a full-pad workout. Only two more practices remain before the spring game, and defensive coordinator John Papuchis expressed his hope that his charges will be able to finish strong this week leading into the big day Saturday. “You get into the last week and guys start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I just don’t want guys to lose focus.” Papuchis said. “There’s still progress to be made, even though we’re getting to the tail end of spring. I still want our guys to come out focused and be prepared every day and treat it like it’s the first day.” The Huskers will practice again on Wednesday. Tickets are still available for Saturday’s scrimmage at the Huskers’ official website.

Rockies Embarrassed in Home Opener

So much for first impressions. The Colorado Rockies played nine innings of insipid baseball in their home opener yesterday, falling to the San Francisco Giants 7-0. The Rockies could muster just four hits on the day against Giants starter Barry Zito, who went the distance and became the first left-handed pitcher to shut out the Rockies at Coors Field since 1997. But offense was hardly the only aspect of the game in which the Rockies utterly failed. Starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin gave up four runs on four hits and five walks in just four innings of work. Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki both made errors that helped the Giants score three more runs in the fifth frame. The Rockies, who have lost three straight after their Opening Day win, have today off to lick their wounds before resuming their series with the Giants tomorrow night.
