Rockies Lose in Spring Training Finale

The Colorado Rockies concluded their Cactus League schedule yesterday with a 7-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners in Scottsdale, Arizona. Rockies starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin scuffled through four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. Offensively, catcher Wilin Rosario smacked a pair of doubles, outfielder Michael Cuddyer tripled, and Jordan Pacheco and Chris Nelson each drove in a run. The Rockies wrap up Cactus League play with a 17-15 record. The Rockies finalized their 25-man roster after the game. They’ll carry four starting pitchers until Drew Pomeranz is recalled for his first start of the year on April 15. That allows both Jonathan Herrera and Eric Young Jr. to make the team as utilitymen. The Rockies take on the Houston Astros on Friday in Houston for their season opener.

Broncos Preseason Opponents Set

The Denver Broncos preseason opponents were revealed yesterday. The Broncos will play host to the Seattle Seahawks in the second week of preseason, and the next week will host the San Francisco 49ers in a nationally televised game August 26. The Broncos will travel to Chicago to face the Bears to open preseason, and round up the exhibition schedule at Arizona against the Cardinals.

Nuggets Lose Late at Woeful Hornets

The Denver Nuggets were unable to end their season-long seven-game road trip on a high note, as they lost to the lowly New Orleans Hornets 94-92 last night. Down 11 in the fourth quarter, the Nuggets tied the game with 10 seconds to play on an Al Harrington three-pointer, but Eric Gordon drew a foul with 2 seconds left and made both free throws to give the Hornets the win. Ty Lawson led the Nuggets with 22 points. The Nuggets fall to 29-25 with the defeat. They return home to host Phoenix on Friday.

Miles Adds Assistant, Loses Two More Players

Nebraska head basketball coach Tim Miles announced an addition to his coaching staff and two departures from his roster yesterday. Ben Johnson, an assistant at Northern Iowa for the last four seasons, will join Miles and Ronald Coleman on the Husker bench. The 31 year-old Johnson has Big Ten ties. He played his first two seasons of college hoops at Northwestern before transferring to Minnesota for his final two seasons. Next year’s Husker team saw their ranks decrease further when Miles announced that Jorge Brian Diaz and Mike Fox are leaving the program. Diaz, the promsing but oft-injured big man from Puerto Rico, played just 16 games last season and will pursue professional basketball in his home country. Fox played in 23 games last season. He’s leaving the team to focus on student teaching next year.

Huskers Blank K-State

The Husker baseball team finished off a season sweep of Kansas State with a 6-0 win in Manhattan last night. Five Nebraska hurlers combined for a four-hit shutout, the team’s first of the season. Husker starter Tyler King worked four scoreless innings in his first career start for the win, and Tyler Niederklein, Ryan Hander, Aaron Bummer and Travis Huber finished things off. Offensively, the Huskers first struck on Rich Sanguinetti’s double and an error in the third inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Sanguinetti’s RBI single and Kash Kalkowski’s two-run knock opened the margin to 5-0 in the seventh. Kale Kiser’s sacrifice fly in the ninth provided one last piece of insurance. The win snaps Nebraska’s two-game losing streak and moves them to 20-11 on the season. The Huskers open a three-game home series with Iowa on Friday.

Rockies Edge Mariners in Penultimate Spring Training Contest

The Colorado Rockies defeated the Seattle Mariners 9-8 in a wild Cactus League game in Scottsdale, Arizona yesterday afternoon. After allowing five runs in the top of the fifth inning to fall behind 5-4, the Rockies responded by scoring four times in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead for good. Nine different players each had one hit for the Rockies in the win. Infielder Jonathan Herrera drove in three runs, including two on a double in that four-run fifth. On the mound, Rockies starting pitcher Juan Nicasio had his roughest outing of the spring, failing to make it out of the fifth inning and allowing four runs on eight hits. The victory moves the Rockies to 17-14 in Cactus League play. They play their final Cactus League game this afternoon, once again taking on the Mariners in Scottsdale.

Huskers Will Wear ‘Alternate’ Uniform For One 2012 Home Game

The traditional red and white of Nebraska’s football uniforms may have a dramatically different look on one occasion next season. Athletic director Tom Osborne has agreed to allow Adidas to design an alternate uniform for one Husker home game in the 2012 season. Osborne said the design has not been finalized, but that it will stand out from the usual standard. It is not yet known in which game the team will wear the alternate uniforms.

This is NOT the official design for Nebraska's alternate uniforms next year, but a mock-up found on the internet.

Huskers Wrap Up Sixth Spring Practice

The Husker football team was back to the grind yesterday for the sixth of their allotted fifteen spring practices. The Big Red worked out for two hours outdoors to open the third week of spring ball. Offensive coordinator Tim Beck spoke to the media after the practice session and said he likes what he’s seen thus far.

“Those guys are very hard-working and loyal,” Beck said. “We don’t have to spend a lot of time going over everything; they are getting a better understanding of everything. They’re identifying the mistakes faster because they’ve gone through it and they know what I expect. It’s been a lot better. A night and day difference.”

Beck specifically credited quarterback Taylor Martinez for his hard work, confidence, and poise thus far in camp. “He looks like a different guy in the passing game,” Beck said. “He’s had good confidence, poise, presence in the pocket and footwork. Every now and then he resorts back to some things but I’ve been really pleased with what he’s been putting on film.”

The Huskers will take today off and return to the practice field on Wednesday.

Huskers Visit Kansas State For Third Meeting This Season

Husker baseball hopes to rebound from a disappointing weekend on the road by traveling to Manhattan, Kansas and earning a third win in three tries against Kansas State tonight. The Huskers dropped two out of three games at Northwestern this past weekend in their first Big Ten road series of the season, dropping their conference record to 3-3 and overall record to 19-11. Tonight, they meet a familiar foe – not just historically, but recently. Nebraska has hosted Kansas State twice the season, defeating the Wildcats 9-6 back on March 6 and knocking them off 6-3 on March 27. Left-hander Tyler King will start on the mound for the Huskers. It’s the sophomore’s first career starting assignment. K-State will counter with a sophomore lefty of their own, Jared Moore. First pitch tonight is set for 6:35.

Rosario Homers, But Rockies Fall

The Colorado Rockies lost to the Seattle Mariners 7-2 in Cactus League play yesterday afternoon. Rockies starter Jamie Moyer gave up four runs in five innings of work, though only one run was earned. Wilin Rosario homered for the Rox in the defeat. The Rockies play the penultimate game of their spring schedule this afternoon, when they again take on the Mariners in Scottsdale.
