Huskers Drop Game, Series at Northwestern

The Nebraska baseball team is still searching for their first conference road series win since 2008 after dropping the rubber game of their three-game series at Northwestern yesterday afternoon. The abnormally punchless Huskers managed just six hits in a 6-1 loss. Chad Christensen’s RBI groundout in the fourth inning tied the game, but other Husker rallies were snuffed out by Wildcat hurler Zach Morton, who went the distance for the win. Husker starter Zach Hirsch took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in five and two thirds innings. Nebraska won the opening game of the series on Friday, but made six errors in an 8-4 loss on Saturday. Sunday’s loss drops the Big Red to 19-11 on the season and 3-3 in the Big Ten conference. The Huskers visit Kansas State on Tuesday night.

Ubaldo Plunks Tulo, Benches Clear in Rockies Loss

Tempers flared in the Colorado Rockies’ 12-10 loss to the Cleveland Indians in Cactus League play yesterday. Former Rockie pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez, traded to the Indians last summer, hit Troy Tulowitzki in the left elbow in the first inning, causing the benches to clear. Jimenez had made critical comments about his relationship with the Rockies organization this offseason, to which Tulowitzki had responded. After the game, Jimenez claimed the beaning wasn’t intentional, but the Rockies did not agree, with manager Jim Tracy calling it ‘classless’ and suggesting that Jimenez should be suspended. Tulowitzki was removed from the game after being hit, but x-rays were negative and he is expected to be ready for Friday’s regular season opener. The Rockies take on the Seattle Mariners this afternoon.

Husker Softball Wins In Extras

The Nebraska softball team defeated Minnesota 5-4 in eight innings yesterday, rebounding from being swept in the series opening double-header on Saturday. Mattie Fowler’s two-run single in the top of the eighth gave the Huskers the lead, and ace pitcher Ashley Hageman struck out the side in the bottom half to preserve the win. The Huskers are now 21-14 on the season.

Nuggets Beat Magic, Move Into Seventh In West

The Denver Nuggets defeated the Dwight Howard-less Orlando Magic 104-101 in Orlando last night. Ty Lawson’s 25 points led the Nuggets, who have now won back-to-back games on this current road trip. The win moves the Nuggets to 29-24 on the season and into seventh place in the Western Conference. They’re back in action on Wednesday night, wrapping up their seven game road swing against the New Orleans Hornets.

Rockies Top Tribe (LISTEN LIVE – Rockies vs Rangers TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

Juan Nicasio pitched effectively into the sixth inning and Troy Tulowitzki racked up three hits as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Cleveland Indians 6-3 in Cactus League action yesterday afternoon. Nicasio allowed two runs in his five and two-thirds innings, striking out six batters. Tulowitzki doubled and scored as part of a two-run first inning that gave the Rockies the lead for good. Chris Nelson, the new front-runner for the starting job at third base, hit a two-run double in the fourth inning. Wilin Rosario continued his strong spring as he bids for the backup catcher’s role, as he banged out a pair of hits. With one week left before Opening Day, the Rockies improved to 15-11 in the spring season with the win. They host the Texas Rangers tonight. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with the pregame show at 8:30.

Huskers Open Series At Northwestern Today

The Nebraska baseball team won just two conference series in their final season in the Big 12 last year. They’re already one-for-one in Big Ten Conference weekend series, and open their bid for two-for-two today in Evanston, Illinois, in game one of their three-game set with Northwestern. Nebraska’s first conference road trip of the season takes them to visit a Wildcat team that will be playing their first home games of the season. They have compiled an 8-14 record on the campaign thus far. On the flip side, the Huskers just went 12-5 on a 17-game homestand to improve their record to 18-9. The Huskers will send Tom Lemke to the mound for the lidlifter today. Jon Keller and lefty Zach Hirsch will follow in Darin Erstad’s pitching rotation. First pitch this afternoon is scheduled for 3 PM.

Broncos Re-Sign Veteran DE Hunter

The Denver Broncos resigned defensive end Jason Hunter to a one-year contract. Hunter has been a valuable backup each of the last two seasons in Denver, spelling Elvis Dumervil and Robert Ayers on the outside last season. Hunter joins linebackers Wesley Woodyard and Joe Mays as players who the Broncos have re-signed to their defense. Mario Haggan, Marcus Thomas and Brian Dawkins remain free-agents.

Surging Husker Softball Plays Three At Minnesota This Weekend

The Nebraska softball team rides a nine-game winning streak into this weekend’s Big Ten Conference series at Minnesota. After a slow start to the season for the previously-ranked Huskers, their streak has moved their record to 20-12. The Huskers and Gophers play a double-header on Saturday and a single game Sunday. Sunday’s game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.

Husker Football Spring Practice Report

Spring practice continued for the Husker football team yesterday, as the Big Red practiced for two hours outdoors in full pads in their fifth of fifteen allotted spring workouts. After the practice, new defensive coordinator John Papuchis addressed the media. Papuchis, filling the role previously occupied by Carl Pelini, agreed with head coach Bo Pelini’s assessment that the defense is off to a bit of a quicker start this spring than the offense. “That usually is the case, because the speed of the game defensively is sometimes a little bit easier than offensively, with all the things they have going on,” Papuchis said. “I’m pleased right now. I think through five practices, we’re kind of on track on where we need to be, but we’re nowhere near where we need to go.” The Huskers have another practice scheduled for this afternoon.

Miles Releases Two JuCo Commits; Moore to Transfer

Less than a week into his tenure as Nebraska’s men’s basketball coach, Tim Miles’ list of available scholarship players for the 2012-2013 season has shrunk from 14 to 11. Miles released a pair of junior college commits, Keith Coleman and Jerran Young, from their scholarships, and announced that freshman Josiah Moore would be transferring. The two high school seniors who had committed to Nebraska’s class of 2012, Shavon Shields and Benny Parker, reaffirmed their status as future Huskers.
