Husker Women Open Big Ten Tourney Against Northwestern

The 24th-ranked Nebraska women’s basketball team opens Big Ten tournament play this afternoon in Indianapolis. As the sixth seed in the conference, the Huskers are matched up against eleventh-seeded Northwestern. Nebraska concluded the regular season with a 21-7 record and a 10-6 mark in the Big Ten. The Huskers are coming off arguably their most impressive win of the season, a 71-57 defeat of eighth-ranked Ohio State at the Devaney Center on Sunday. Northwestern finished 14-15 and won just four of their 16 conference games, but one of those wins was a 63-51 defeat of the Huskers in Lincoln back on February 16. Nebraska’s women have never won a conference tournament championship. Action at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse is scheduled to begin at approximately 1 PM today.

Husker Men Set Record For Single-Season Home Losses

The Nebraska men’s basketball team has now lost more home games this season than in any other season in the program’s history. The Huskers were beaten by Iowa 62-53 on Senior Night at the Devaney Center last night. Nebraska shot just 36.5 percent from the field and missed 20 of their 24 three-point attempts. Brandon Ubel led the Huskers with 17 points in the defeat. Caleb Walker, one of four Huskers playing their final home games, chipped in with 15 points. The loss drops the Huskers to 12-16 and 4-13 in Big Ten play. It is the eighth home loss for the Big Red this season, a new program record. The Huskers have one more regular season game before the Big Ten tournament. They are in action on Saturday afternoon, when they trek north to face Minnesota.

NPCC Men Fall; Women Play For Region IX Title Tonight (LISTEN LIVE on ESPN Radio 1410)

The North Platte Knights were defeated in their regular season finale last night, falling to Western Nebraska 80-62 at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium. The Knights led by eight in the first half, but a 19-3 first-half run by the Cougars gave them control of the game for good. Nick Tomsick led the Knights with 27 points in the loss. The Knights finish the regular season with 17-13 record. The Region IX tournament opens next Friday in Scottsbluff. Tonight, the North Platte Lady Knights face Southeast for the third time this season with the Region IX Division II championship at stake. The Lady Knights fell to the Storm in North Platte in December, but won at Southeast earlier this month. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action from Beatrice tonight, with the pregame show at 6:15 and the tipoff at 6:30.

Husker Men Host Iowa on Senior Night

The Nebraska men’s basketball team hasn’t created many fond memories in their first Big Ten season, but they’ll hope to make Senior Night one to remember tonight, as they host Iowa at the Devaney Center in the regular season home finale. Four Husker seniors will be honored, as Brandon Richardson, Toney McCray, Caleb Walker and Bo Spencer play their final games in Lincoln. Nebraska hopes to rebound from one of their worst performances of the season, a 62-34 home loss to Michigan State last Saturday. The Huskers are just 4-12 in Big Ten play, but one of those four wins was a 79-73 victory of the Hawkeyes in Iowa City back on January 26. Iowa needs a win to bolster their NCAA tournament case. They’re 15-14 and 7-9 in conference play. Tipoff tonight is scheduled for 8:05.

Brady’s State Bid Falls Short – Paxton Books First Trip Since 2000

The Paxton Tigers are heading back to the boys basketball state tournament for the first time since 2000. The Tigers held off a stubborn Sandhills/Thedford squad 50-46 in the D1-6 subdistrict final in North Platte to book a trip to Lincoln next week. The win moves the third-ranked Tigers to 22-1 on the season. The Brady Eagles hoped to become the third Lincoln County team to qualify for this year’s state tournament, but that dream fell short as the Eagles lost to Hayes Center 62-52 in the D2-5 district championship game in Hershey. The Cardinals duplicated a regular season win over the Eagles to earn their trip to Lincoln. Brady’s season comes to an end with a 19-4 record. Hershey and St. Patrick’s will represent the county at the boys state tournament, beginning next Thursday.

Hershey and St. Pat’s Win District Finals; Brady Hopes to Join Them at State

Lincoln County boys basketball teams went two-for-two last night, as both Hershey and St. Patrick’s took home district championships and earned trips to the state tournament. In the C1-6 district championship game in Ogallala, Hershey jumped out to a 17-point first quarter lead and never looked back in a 55-37 victory over Kimball that sends the Panthers to Lincoln for the first time since 1994. The C2-6 district final in Sutherland saw the St. Pat’s Irish book a repeat ticket to state as they shut down Perkins County 49-39. Tonight, a third Lincoln County team will hope to join next weekend’s party. The Brady Eagles are in search of their first state tournament berth since 1998 as they take on Hayes Center in the D2-5 district final in Hershey, with tip-off scheduled for 7 PM.

Four Husker Women’s Hoopsters Earn All-Big Ten Honors

Four Nebraska women’s basketball players were honored with the announcement of the All-Big Ten teams yesterday afternoon. Sophomore forward Jordan Hooper was named to the All-Big Ten first team. The Huskers’ leading scorer and rebounder became the fifth sophomore in program history to earn first-team all-conference honors and the first since Kelsey Griffin in 2007. Junior Lindsey Moore was named to the second team, the second straight year the Husker point guard has received second-team conference honors. Freshman forward Emily Cady earned a spot on the all-freshman team and was also named honorable mention all-conference. Senior guard Kaitlyn Burke garnered a spot on the conference’s Sportsmanship team. The Huskers open Big Ten tournament play on Thursday afternoon

Secondary Coach Raymond Leaves Husker Staff

The Husker football team has lost a member of its coaching staff. Defensive backs coach Corey Raymond is departing after one season with the program to accept the same position at LSU. Raymond had previously turned down an offer from his alma mater to replace Ron Cooper, but when LSU coach Les Miles offered him the job the second time, he accepted. Raymond replaced Marvin Sanders on Bo Pelini’s staff last spring after an even briefer stint elsewhere. He had been a member of Kevin Wilson’s staff at Indiana for just one month before bolting for Nebraska. The Huskers finished 18th in the country in pass defense and 34th in pass efficiency defense under Raymond’s tutelage. The Huskers will likely hope to have someone in Raymond’s place on the staff before the start of spring practice March 10.

Irish, Panthers Play District Finals Tonight (LISTEN LIVE: St. Pat’s on ESPN Radio 1410, Hershey on Q-Country 107.3)

Tonight, two Lincoln County boys basketball teams will try and follow the footsteps of their girls programs in clinching state tournament berths. The St. Patrick’s Irish are hoping to return to state for the second straight year as they take on Perkins County in the C2-6 district final in Sutherland. The Irish beat the Plainsmen in a regular season contest back on January 6. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action live, with pregame coverage at 7:15 and the tip-off at 7:30. The Hershey Panthers are hoping for their first state trip since 1994 as they face Kimball in the C1-6 district final in Ogallala. It’s a rematch of last season’s district final, won by Kimball, and a regular season game on December 16, also won by the Longhorns. Q-Country 107.3 has that game for you, with a 7:15 pregame show and a 7:30 tip.
