The Denver Broncos keep on hanging around the AFC West race thanks to another outstanding effort from their stifiling defense. Matt Prater’s 37 yard field goal deep into overtime lifted the Broncos to a 16-13 victory over the San Diego Chargers in San Diego yesterday. The Broncos tied the game on a 24-yard field goal by Prater with 1:34 left in regulation. The Broncos were led by a defensive effort that sacked Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers three times. A Von Miller tackle for loss in overtime helped push back a game-winning field goal attempt by the Chargers. Nick Novak missed his 53-yard attempt wide right after Miller stopped Mike Tolbert for a four-yard loss on third down. The Broncos have won five of six games and are 5-6 on the season. They travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings next Sunday.

Huskers Plummet In Polls After Pummeling At Michigan
The Huskers fell hard in Ann Arbor on Saturday, and consequently fell in the polls on Sunday. The Huskers are down to 22nd in both major polls, falling five spots in the AP poll and six spots in the USA Today Coaches poll, after their 45-17 loss to Michigan. The 8-3 Huskers are 21st in the newest edition of the BCS Rankings. The Huskers were officially eliminated from Big Ten Legends Division title contention with the loss, in which the Huskers were outscored 28-7 in the second half. They turned the ball over three times and held possession for just under 19 minutes, both factors leading to the one-sided defeat. The Huskers have a short week this week in preparing for their final game of the regular season. They will host Iowa in the inaugural ‘Heroes Game’ Friday afternoon at 11 AM.

The Husker men’s basketball team eased to their third win of the season with an 83-63 blowout of Rhode Island yesterday afternoon at the Devaney Center. Three Huskers scored in double figures, led by 23 points from Bo Spencer. Caleb Walker chipped in a career-high 17 points, and Dylan Talley added 14 points off the bench. The Huskers shot a scalding 57 percent from the field and hit 10 of 23 three-point attempts. They return to action Wednesday night, as they welcome Oregon to Lincoln for an 8 PM tipoff. The Husker women’s basketball team takes the Devaney Center floor tonight, hosting Savannah State. The ladies are fresh off an upset win over 23rd-ranked USC on Friday night and will look for their fourth win in a row. Tipoff tonight is set for 7:05.
Rockies Trade Wigginton To Phillies
The Colorado Rockies made their first significant move of the offseason yesterday, trading one of their leading home-run hitters from last season. The Rockies shipped Ty Wigginton to the Philadelphia Phillies for a player to be named later or cash. Wigginton signed a two-year, $8 million deal prior to the 2011 season. Signed as a utility player, Wigginton took over as the team’s everyday third baseman. In 130 games, he batted .242 with 15 home runs, a total that tied him for third on the team. He collected 47 RBI but struggled with runners on base, batting an appalling .163 with runners in scoring position. The two teams will split the remaining $4 million on Wigginton’s contract. Wigginton’s departure means the Rockies should be in the market for a third baseman to compete with Ian Stewart for the everyday job in 2012.

The Broncos trailed 10-3 in the third quarter when Andre Goodman intercepted Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and returned it for a touchdown to tie the score. New York regained the lead on a field goal with just over nine minutes to go, but Tebow’s run on third down gave the Broncos their third consecutive win, and fourth win in five games. The Broncos are now half a game behind Oakland in the AFC West race. The Broncos return to action next Sunday against another divisional foe, heading west for their second meeting of the season against the San Diego Chargers.
Broncos Host Jets On Thursday Night Football (Listen Live on ESPN Radio 1410)
The Denver Broncos admit they can’t run a real offense with Tim Tebow at quarterback. But their college style rushing attack has led them to back-to-back wins. The Broncos ran the ball 55 times last week and threw only eight times in a 17-10 victory over Kansas City. The Huskers return home on Saturday to host Wisconsin. It will be senior night at NU Coliseum as the Huskers play their final home game of the season.
