Huskers Highest-Ranked Big Ten Team After Big Win Saturday

A Blackshirt rebirth helped the Huskers climb up the polls this week. The Huskers jumped up four spots to ninth in both the AP and USA Today Coaches polls. That leap enabled them to move up to tenth in the third batch of BCS rankings. The Huskers are the highest ranked Big Ten Conference team in all three of those sets of rankings. Nebraska throttled Michigan State 24-3 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, allowing a season-low 187 yards of total offense to the visiting Spartans. The Husker offense had a season-low of their own, gaining just 270 yards, but two time-consuming touchdown drives in the third quarter sealed the game. The Huskers now sit in a three-way tie for first place in the Big Ten Legends Division with Michigan and Michigan State, all of whom have one conference loss.

Husker Women’s Hoops Opens With Exhibition Win

The season for the Husker women’s basketball team opened unofficially last night with an exhibition game against Division II Pittsburg State at the Devaney Center. The young Husker team, who feature six freshmen, got better as the game rolled on and routed the Gorillas 86-55. Sophomore Jordan Hooper set the pace for the Huskers with 24 points and 17 rebounds. Of the six newcomers, Emily Cady had the brightest debut with 14 points. Coming off the bench, Adrianna Maurer added 11 points and Rebecca Woodberry chipped in 10. The Huskers outrebounded the Gorillas 57-38 and forced 23 turnovers. Nebraska was the first Big Ten team to start their exhibition season. They will play one other exhibition game, hosting Nebraska-Kearney next Sunday afternoon.

Tebow Embarrassed As Broncos Routed By Lions

Tim Tebow’s second start of the 2011 season was an unmitigated disaster. Tebow and the Denver Broncos were blown out 45-10 by the Detroit Lions at Sports Authority Field yesterday afternoon. The Broncos drew first blood on a Matt Prater field goal in the first quarter, but then proceeded to give up 45 consecutive points until Tebow connected with Eric Decker for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Tebow completed 18 of his 39 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns – one to his own team, one to Detroit’s Chris Houston, who returned an interception 100 yards for a score. Tebow was sacked seven times and lost a fumble on one of them, which also was returned for a touchdown. The Broncos fall to 2-5 on the season with the loss. They visit the Oakland Raiders next Sunday.
