Broncos Could Announce Starting Quarterback Today (UPDATE: It’s Tebow)

The Denver Broncos may announce as soon as today whether Tim Tebow will take the reins for good as the team’s starting quarterback. Public opinion has always favored Tebow, who nearly brought the Broncos back from a 16 point deficit in an eventual 29-24 loss to San Diego on Sunday. Tebow rushed for a touchdown and passed for another in the second half after taking over for an ineffective Kyle Orton. John Fox wouldn’t commit to a change on the depth chart immediately after the game, but may make an announcement after practice today. The Broncos made a personnel move yesterday, placing defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson on injured reserve and signing fullback Quinn Johnson. The Broncos are off this week, and resume their schedule with a game against the winless Dolphins in Miami next Sunday.

UPDATE 10:15 AM: At a player’s meeting this morning, the Broncos announced that Tim Tebow would be the team’s starting quarterback for their next game at Miami.

Tebow Time In Denver; Broncos Lose Anyway

Fans in Denver got their wish as Tim Tebow finally got his chance to lead the Denver Broncos offense. But he had no better luck bringing a victory than the man he had been backing up. Tebow led a pair of touchdown drives in the second half after replacing Kyle Orton, but his last-second hail mary fell incomplete as the Broncos lost to the San Diego Chargers 29-24 at Mile High Stadium. Orton struggled badly in the first half as the Chargers took a 23-10 lead, paving the way for the switch to Tebow. The 2010 first-round pick rushed for a touchdown and threw for one on a screen pass that brought the Broncos to within 26-24 late in the fourth quarter, but the two-point conversion failed. Tebow completed four of his ten passes for 79 yards and rushed six times for 38 yards. The Broncos drop to 1-4 with the loss.

Huskers Fourteenth In Both Polls After Dramatic Comeback Win

They don’t give bonus points for dramatic comebacks in the AP and USA Today Coaches college football polls. Nebraska found that out this week as they stay put in the AP poll and moved up just one spot in the USA Today Coaches poll, leaving them ranked 14th in both polls. The Huskers pulled off the largest comeback in school history on Saturday in Lincoln, erasing a 27-6 deficit to defeat Ohio State 34-27. Taylor Martinez went a long way towards silencing some of his critics by throwing for two touchdowns and running for another as the Huskers offense found life in the second half. The Huskers moved their record over the last two seasons to 15-0 when rushing for 200 or more yards as a team. This week, Nebraska has a bye. They’ll resume their season at Minnesota next Saturday afternoon.

Husker Volleyball Runs Winning Streak to Ten

The sixth ranked Nebraska volleyball team kept on rolling with two wins over the weekend at the NU Coliseum. On Friday night the Huskers dispatched 11th ranked Purdue in four sets, 25-22, 20-25, 25-14, 25-22, making the Boilermakers the third ranked Big Ten opponent to taste defeat against the Big Red. Gina Mancuso’s 16 kills led the Huskers, with Morgan Broekhuis adding 13 kills and Haley Thramer chipping in with a career high 12 kills. On Saturday, the Huskers throttled Indiana in three sets, 25-19, 25-14, 25-13. Hannah Werth’s 13 kills were tops in that victory, which was Nebraska’s tenth straight victory. The Huskers are back on the road this coming weekend to try and stay unbeaten in conference play. They play at Wisconsin on Friday and at Minnesota on Saturday.

Huskers Ready For Buckeyes Saturday

If the Nebraska football team is concerned at all heading into this Saturday’s home game against Ohio State, given their lopsided loss at Wisconsin last week, they haven’t shown it. The fourteenth-ranked Huskers wrapped up preparations for their clash with the Buckeyes with yesterday’s practice. Husker head coach Bo Pelini says his team had a good week of practice following their pratfall in Madison. The Husker defense will look to get well against a struggling Buckeye offense. Ohio State is 3-2 and unranked due in large part to the struggles of their two quarterbacks, Joe Bauserman and true freshman Braxton Miller. They were held to under 200 yards of total offense in a 10-7 home loss to Michigan State last week. The first home Big Ten game in Memorial Stadium history kicks off at 7 tomorrow night.

District Softball – Bulldogs Face Elimination, Swedes One Win From State

District softball playoffs got underway yesterday, and North Platte stayed alive in the A4 district with a 9-1 victory over Omaha North in an elimination game. The Bulldogs were bounced to the elimination bracket with a 7-4 loss to Columbus in the first round. They get another crack at the Discoverers today in another elimination game at 11 AM. If the Bulldogs win, they will have to beat the district hosts Millard West twice to claim the district crown and earn a trip to state. In the C6 district, the Gothenburg Swedes are one win away from a state berth. The top-seeded Swedes routed Blue Hill 10-0 and shut down Southern Valley 8-0 to reach the final. They will play either Blue Hill, Chadron, or Southern Valley for the right to go to state at 12:30 in Gothenburg, with a second championship game to follow if necessary.
