Four Injured Starters Return to Practice

The injury report for the Denver Broncos looks much more promising this week than it did last week. Four starters who missed last week’s game against Cincinnati have returned to the practice field. Receiver Brandon Lloyd, running back Knowshon Moreno, defensive end Elvis Dumervil, and linebacker DJ Williams all participated in practice for a second straight day yesterday and are expected to play. Cornerback Champ Bailey, defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas are still not practicing and are unlikely to play. The Broncos also signed tight end Dante Rosario, who they cut in training camp, and he joined the team at practice yesterday. The 1-1 Broncos play their first road game of the season on Sunday afternoon when they visit the 1-1 Tennessee Titans.

Bulldog Softball Hosts Lexington (TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

Tonight on ESPN Radio 1410 it’s North Platte Bulldog softball. The Bulldogs and Lexington Minutemaids are no strangers to each other this season, having played each other twice. On August 30th in Lexington, the Bulldogs won a mercy-rule shortened game 10-1 in five innings. The Minutemaids were more competitive when the teams met at the North Platte Tournament last Saturday, but the Bulldogs were able to earn another victory, this one in a slugfest, 12-8. Tonight the two foes meet for a third time. North Platte comes in off a loss to McCook on Tuesday night that dropped their overall record to 8-14. Lexington enters tonight’s game with a record of 7-12. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action from the Dowhower Softball Complex tonight. Pregame coverage starts at 6:15 with first pitch at 6:30.

Husker Volleyball Opens Big Ten Play With Win Over Penn State

The Nebraska volleyball team opened their Big Ten season in style. In their inaugural Big Ten conference match, the tenth-ranked Huskers held off the fifth-ranked and four-time defending national champion Penn State Nittany Lions in five sets at the NU Coliseum. Nebraska took the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-16, but Penn State battled back to win set three 25-23 and set four 25-19. In the fifth set, the Huskers put the match away 15-10. Gina Mancuso led the Husker attack with 22 kills on the night. She also tallied 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Morgan Broekhuis also had a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. Nebraska improves their record to 8-1 on the season with the victory. The Huskers host 24th -ranked Ohio State on Saturday.

Rockies Lose Seventh Straight to Cap Winless Homestand

The Colorado Rockies had never gone winless on a homestand of as long as seven games. Add another ignominious achievement to the disappointing 2011 season. The Rockies lost to the San Diego Padres yesterday afternoon, concluding their final homestand of the year with an 0-7 record and extending their longest losing streak of the season. The Padres scored all four runs in the game in the first inning off of Aaron Cook, making likely his final start at home in a Rockies uniform. Cook lasted five innings and tied a career high with eight strikeouts. Eric Young Jr. and Dexter Fowler had two hits apiece, but the Rockies could only manage six hits total in the shutout loss. The Rockies begin the final week of the season with the first of four games in Houston against the Astros tonight. First pitch is at 7:05.

Crick ‘Day-to-Day’, Dennard Likely to Return for Wyoming Game

A Nebraska defense hoping for the return of one of their most important players now must wait and see if their best player will be available for Saturday. Jared Crick sat out practice yesterday with an undisclosed injury, and defensive coordinator Carl Pelini says his star defensive tackle is day-to-day, but he hopes he will be able to play Sunday. The news relating to cornerback Alfonzo Dennard was more encouraging. Pelini said that Dennard, who has missed the first three games with an quadriceps injury, is close to making his 2011 debut when the Huskers visit Wyoming this Saturday. Pelini also got an addition to his secondary, as wide receiver Stanley Jean-Baptiste, a sophomore, has moved to cornerback. Jean-Baptiste played safety in high school and intercepted six passes his senior season.

NPCC Falls In Five to NJC

The North Platte Community College Knights lost a five-set thriller to Northeastern Junior College at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium last night. The Knights lost the first two sets 16-25 and 21-25 before rebounding to win the next two sets 25-21 and 29-27. The fifth set went down to the wire before the Knights fell 13-15. The loss drops the Knights to 8-10 on the season. They’re at a tournament in Overland Park, Kansas this weekend.

Rockies Lose Sixth Straight at Home

The final week-long homestand of the season was supposed to be Fan Appreciation Week for the Colorado Rockies. Forgive the fans if they’re less appreciative of bearing witness to the team’s longest losing streak of the season, which reached six last night after a 2-1 loss to the San Diego Padres. The Rockies didn’t score until Jordan Pacheco’s RBI single in the ninth inning drew them within a run, but Padres closer Heath Bell finished off the game to send the Rox to defeat. Jhoulys Chacin took the loss on the mound but pitched well, allowing two runs, one earned, in six innings. The Rockies play their last home game this afternoon, with Aaron Cook getting the start against San Diego’s Anthony Bass. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with pregame coverage at 1:30 and the first pitch set for 2:10.

Huskers Start Preparing For Trip to Wyoming

For the first time this season, the ninth-ranked Nebraska football team must get prepared to enter a hostile environment on the road. But there will surely be plenty of friendly red in the stands on Saturday as Husker fans makes the short trip to Laramie for Nebraska’s showdown with Wyoming. Both teams enter with 3-0 records, but Nebraska’s has come against more credible competition, including their 51-38 win over Washington last Saturday. Nebraska offensive coordinator Tim Beck says Taylor Martinez’s play has been the biggest key so far. The Huskers and Cowboys kick off at 6:30 Saturday.
