NPCC Volleyball on ESPN Radio 1410 TONIGHT vs NJC

Tonight on ESPN Radio 1410, its North Platte Community College volleyball. The Knights return to their home floor to face the Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen for the third time this season. North Platte has lost both meetings – the first a two-sets to one defeat at the season-opening Subway Invite at home, and the second a three-set sweep in Sterling, Colorado back on September 8. The Knights are coming off a split at the NJC Invite in Sterling last Friday, beating Lamar in three sets and falling to Otero in four sets. That drops the Knights record to 8-9 on the season, as they have lost six of their last ten matches. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action tonight from McDonald-Belton Gymnasium, with prematch coverage getting things underway at 6:45 before the first serve at 7.

Rockies Lose Fifth Straight at Home

The Colorado Rockies continue to make a mess out of their final homestand of the season. Kevin Millwood was shelled as the San Diego Padres routed the Rockies 8-2 last night to make them 0-5 so far on this seven-game homestand. It’s the first time the Rockies have lost five straight at home since May of 2009, a streak that led to the firing of then-manager Clint Hurdle. The Rockies only managed one hit on the night – a two-run home run by Mark Ellis in the sixth inning to break up Cory Luebke’s no-hit bit. Millwood suffered his shortest outing as a Rockie, departing in the fourth inning after giving up seven runs on nine hits. The Rockies play their penultimate home game of the season tonight, with Jhoulys Chacin getting the start on the mound against San Diego’s Mat Latos. First pitch is at 7:40.

Huskers Jump One Spot to Ninth in Both Major Polls

Nebraska’s reward for their most explosive start to a season offensively in over a decade and a half is a one-spot leap to ninth in the latest AP and USA Today coaches college football polls. The Huskers rolled to a 51-38 victory over Washington on Saturday at Memorial Stadium, meaning they’ve scored 40 or more points in each of their first three games, something the Huskers haven’t done since the national championship season of 1995. Nebraska ran up 460 total yards of offense on the Huskies, including 309 on the ground, led by Rex Burkhead’s 120 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Nebraska is off to a 3-0 start for the second straight season. On Saturday, they play their lone non-conference road game of the season as they head west on I-80 to Laramie to take on Wyoming. The Cowboys are also 3-0.

Broncos Earn First Win As Orton Throws Two TDs

The much-maligned Kyle Orton delivered a victory for the Denver Broncos on Sunday, throwing two touchdown passes as the Broncos sneaked past the Cincinnati Bengals 24-22 at Sports Authority Field. Both of Orton’s scoring strikes were caught by Eric Decker, whose second TD of the game gave the Broncos a 24-15 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Bengals added a touchdown to get within two points and had the ball inside of two minutes, but could not get into field goal range. Willis McGahee rushed for 101 yards to help balance the Bronco offense. Bronco fans clamoring for Tim Tebow got their wish – the third-string quarterback lined up at wide receiver on a couple of plays after injuries depleted the Broncos reserves at that position. The 1-1 Broncos visit the Tennessee Titans next Sunday.

Rockies Swept By Giants, Open Final Home Series Tonight (ON ESPN Radio 1410)

The Colorado Rockies continue to limp to the finish line. The Rockies were battered by the San Francisco Giants 12-5 at Coors Field yesterday, wrapping up a four-game sweep for the visitors. Pablo Sandoval hit two of San Francisco’s five home runs in the game, four of which were hit off of Rockies starting pitcher Esmil Rogers, who failed to make it out of the fourth inning. Giants pitcher Matt Cain even went deep off Rogers, and worked five innings for the win. Ty Wigginton and Seth Smith had two hits and an RBI each, and Chris Iannetta and Eric Young Jr. also drove in runs for the Rockies in the losing effort. The Rockies open their final home series of the season tonight as the San Diego Padres come to town. ESPN Radio 1410 has all the action, with pregame coverage at 7:05 and first pitch at 7:40.

Pelini Says Defense Will Be Ready For Saturday

The tenth-ranked Nebraska Huskers are 2-0, but the record doesn’t tell the story of some of the difficulties that the team has had getting to that point. After last week’s 42-29 win over Fresno State, the focus was on the struggles of the defense. In his typically terse Thursday post-practice remarks, Husker head coach Bo Pelini says he thinks the defense had a good week of preparation for Saturday’s game against Washington. The Huskers split with the Huskies last season, with Nebraska winning on the road and Washignton winning in the Holiday Bowl. Kickoff tomorrow at Memorial Stadium is set for 2:30.
