Broncos Open Season Hosting Raiders (TONIGHT On ESPN Radio 1410)
The Denver Broncos are one of four NFL teams who have not yet opened their 2011 seasons. That changes tonight as the Broncos play in the second half of a Monday Night Football doubleheader, christening the newly-renamed Sports Authority Field at Mile High with a clash against their most hated rivals, the Oakland Raiders. Oakland won both meetings against the Broncos in 2010, scoring a combined 98 points in the two games. The Broncos finished a dismal 4-12 but will feature a young and retooled defense and new head coach John Fox. In the first game of the Monday Night double-dip, Danny Woodhead and the New England Patriots host the Miami Dolphins. You can hear the Broncos take on the Raiders tonight on ESPN Radio 1410, with pregame coverage at 7:05 and the kick at 9:15.
Huskers Remain Ranked 10th In Both Major Polls
They may not have looked like a top-10 team on Saturday night, but the Nebraska Cornhuskers still reside in the top 10 of both major national polls for another week. The Huskers held off Fresno State 42-29 at Memorial Stadium despite being outgained 444 yards to 438. The Husker defense permitted the Bulldogs nearly five yards per carry and did not record a sack. Offensively the Huskers failed to sustain drives but were bailed out by the big play. Taylor Martinez had a pair of long touchdown runs and completed three passes of over forty yards as well. It wasn’t until Ameer Abdullah’s 100 yard kickoff return touchdown in the fourth quarter that the Huskers lead felt safe. Still, the Huskers don’t budge in either the AP or USA Today Coaches Polls. They will host Washington this Saturday afternoon.
Pomeranz Dazzles In Debut Victory As Rockies Top Reds
The most prized piece in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade debuted with a bang for the Colorado Rockies yesterday afternoon in Denver. Drew Pomeranz, a left-handed pitcher who was the top prospect of the four the Rockies received from Cleveland in exchange for Jimenez in July, tossed five shutout innings and earned the win in a 4-1 Rockies victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Pomeranz allowed just two hits, walking two and striking out two, for a strong big league debut. He gave way to Jason Hammel, who worked the final four innings in relief for the save. Ty Wigginton homered and Jordan Pacheco had an RBI single to pace the Rockies offense. The win gives the Rockies the season series win over the Reds, four games to three. The Rockies are off today, headed to Milwaukee to begin a two-game series tomorrow night.
