Finally, Rockies Win On Sunday!

The Colorado Rockies’ Sunday losing streak is over. The Rockies defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 at Coors Field yesterday, their first win after a major league record seventeen consecutive Sunday losses. The victory also gives the Rockies back to back series wins for the first time since mid-July. The Rockies had just three hits in the game, but two of them left the park – a two-run home run by Carlos Gonzalez in the first inning opened the scoring, and a two-run blast by Seth Smith in the seventh inning gave the Rockies the lead for good. Kevin Millwood pitched seven innings for his first win in a Rockies uniform. Tonight the Rockies open up a three-game series in Denver against the Houston Astros. Broncos Safety Bruton Leaves Hospital After Head Injury

Denver Broncos safety David Bruton is resting comfortably at home after being released from a Denver hospital Sunday afternoon. Bruton suffered a head injury when he was hit helmet-to-helmet in the second half of the Broncos’ 24-13 preseason victory over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday night. He stayed down on the field for several minutes before being helped to the sideline by trainers, and left the stadium in an ambulance after the game ended to spend the night at a hospital for observation. The third-year defensive back from Notre Dame has been playing with the third team on defense in the preseason, but is on the first team special teams units as he fights for a roster spot. The Broncos are back on the field this Saturday when they host the Seattle Seahawks in their third preseason game.

Husker Athletics Open As Women’s Soccer Loses, Draws

The Nebraska athletic season opened this weekend with a pair of women’s soccer matches as the Husker ladies became the first team to compete as a member of the Big Ten Conference. On Friday the Huskers put a scare into third-ranked North Carolina before falling 2-1 in Lincoln. Junior Jordan Jackson scored three minutes into the second half to tie the score at one, and Nebraska had a chance to take the lead late on a penalty kick, but Morgan Marlborough was stopped and the Tar Heels scored with 13 minutes left to win the game. Yesterday afternoon the Huskers drew with Baylor, 1-1. Sophomore Stacy Bartels scored in the 60th minute to equalize after the Bears had scored in the first half. The Huskers seek their first win in their next game, Thursday night at the University of Denver.

(VIDEO) BASKETBRAWL: Georgetown-Chinese Exhibition Gets Ugly

So much for goodwill games. An exhibition basketball game between Georgetown’s men’s basketball team and a Chinese professional club last night (Thursday) in Beijing turned violent, breaking out into a bench-clearing brawl in which players traded punches, chairs were thrown and members of the crowd tossed water bottles at the Hoyas players and coaches as they sought shelter in the locker room.

The fight broke out with nine-minutes-and-32-seconds left in the game with the score tied at 64. The rest of the game was canceled by the two teams are scheduled to meet again on Sunday.

The brawl occurred just one night after Vice President Biden, in Beijing for a four-day stay to discuss U.S.-Chinese economic relations, attended a Georgetown game against and another Chinese club.

Former players sue NFL over concussions

Seven former players have sued the NFL in Philadelphia over the league’s handling of concussion-related injuries, the first potential class-action lawsuit of its kind. The players accuse the league of training players to lead with their heads, failing to properly treat them for concussions and trying to conceal any links between football and brain injuries. The plaintiffs include two-time Super Bowl champion Jim McMahon, who has said he played through five concussions but now frequently walks around “in a daze.”

Jacobs suspended by MLB and released by Rockies

UNDATED (AP) – Mike Jacobs has the distinction of being the first player suspended by Major League Baseball for a positive HGH test under the sport’s minor league drug testing procedures. The 30-year-old minor league first baseman received a 50-game suspension for taking the banned performance-enhancing substance and was subsequently released by the Colorado Rockies.
Jacobs was in the big leagues from 2005-10. He says he took human growth hormone to overcome knee and back ailments. He was leading the Rockies’ Triple-A team in Colorado Springs with 23 homers and 97 RBIs while hitting .298 over 117 games with the Sky Sox.

Woodhead shines in preseason play

Danny Woodhead rushed 5 times for 63 yards in the New England Patriots preseason game versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last night. He led his team in rushing in the first half of play. Woodhead had no receptions in the game, which New England won 31-14. The Patriots are 2-0 in preseason play.
