The Class A Senior National Division Legion Baseball State Tournament was won by Grand Island Home Federal last night at Bill Wood Field. Grand Island ripped through the tournament field with a 5-0 record, capping it off with a 6-4 victory over Millard South in the championship game. It was Grand Island who eliminated the North Platte First Nationals, finishing their tournament run for good yesterday afternoon in the conclusion of their semifinal game that had been halted due to rain on Tuesday night. The game was resumed with a 6-1 Grand Island lead in the top of the ninth inning. GI would tack on two more runs and the First Nationals went quietly in their half of the ninth to end their season. The First Nationals conclude their season with a 26-27 record and a third place finish at state.

The Colorado Rockies were able to avoid a sweep in Los Angeles last night as Aaron Cook outpitched Hiroki Kuroda in a 3-1 victory. Cook, who had lost his first five decisions this season, has now won two straight starts after twirling seven shutout innings last night. He allowed seven hits and struck out two to earn the victory. Troy Tulowitzki drove in two of Colorado’s three runs and scored the other to lead the offensive charge. Ty Wigginton delivered the other RBI. Dexter Fowler had a pair of hits and scored a run, and Seth Smith had two hits as well. The win snaps a four game losing streak for the Rockies and keeps them ahead of the Dodgers for third place in the NL West. The Rockies are off today as they travel to San Diego to conclude their nine-game road trip with three games against the Padres.

Yesterday marked the first day of training camp for the Denver Broncos at their Dove Valley facility. The Broncos were able to agree to contract terms with four of their draft picks based upon the new rules of the collective bargaining agreement. Tight ends Virgil Green and Julius Thomas, linebacker Mike Mohamed, and defensive end Jeremy Beal all signed yesterday and will be eligible to practice Thursday. The Broncos also made a trade yesterday, acquiring defensive end Jeremy Jarmon from Washington in exchange for veteran wide receiver Jabar Gaffney. The biggest move of the preseason seems yet to come. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported yesterday that the Broncos are prepared to trade quarterback Kyle Orton to the Miami Dolphins, but no deal is on the table at the moment.

The Denver Broncos made a minor trade this afternoon, with a major trade potentially in the works. Reports today have indicated that the Broncos are in talks with the Miami Dolphins, who want to acquire quarterback Kyle Orton. Orton is in the last year of his contract with the Broncos, and the team would like to trade the veteran to clear the way for Tim Tebow to start under center this coming season. Meanwhile, whoever is throwing passes for the Broncos in 2011 has one fewer target to throw to, as the Broncos traded receiver Jabar Gaffney to the Washington Redskins in exchange for defensive end Jeremy Jarmon. Gaffney caught 119 passes over the last two seasons in Denver. Jarmon, a third-year player from Kentucky, played in 16 games over the last two seasons and recorded half a sack.

The Colorado Rockies hope to avoid a sweep in Los Angeles tonight in game three of their series against the Dodgers. The Rockies dropped last night’s game by a 3-2 score, with a pair of defensive miscues leading to all three runs scoring for the Dodgers in the fourth inning. The Rockies have lost four straight games since opening their current nine-game West coast road swing with a victory. They will turn to Aaron Cook to try and stop the slide. The veteran right-hander won his first start of the season to open the road trip in Arizona, allowing four runs in six innings. He’ll be opposed by Hiroki Kuroda. Thanks to the intervention of Mother Nature, the North Platte First Nationals enter the final day of the National Division Legion A State Tournament still alive. But the First Nationals will be in a deep hole against Grand Island when their game resumes today. Last night their game was halted with two outs in the top of the ninth inning due to a power outage at Bill Wood Field, with Grand Island in the midst of a five-run rally that had given them a 6-1 lead. Jamie McKain’s RBI double in the seventh inning had tied the score at one apiece, producing the only North Platte offense of the night. The game will resume at 2:30 this afternoon from the spot at which it was stopped. If North Platte can come back and win, they would play Millard South at 4 PM, and would need to win that game to force a second championship game.

Defensive miscues cost the Colorado Rockies dearly in a pitchers duel in Los Angeles last night. Ty Wigginton dropped a fly ball that sparked a three-run fourth inning, giving the Dodgers all the offense they would need in a 3-2 victory over the Rockies. The third and eventually decisive run scored when a sliding Ryan Spilborghs tripped second baseman Mark Ellis from behind on a short fly ball, allowing Matt Kemp to score after the ball was caught. Todd Helton had both RBI for the Rockies in the losing cause. Jhoulys Chacin gave up all three Dodger runs in his six innings to take the loss, though only one run was earned. The NFL’s Seattle Seahawks signed three former Nebraska Huskers as undrafted free agents yesterday as the league’s offseason began with a flurry of signings one day after the end of the lockout. Quarterback Zac Lee, safety Ricky Thenarse and defensive end Pierre Allen signed with the defending NFC West champions. Other former Huskers to find their NFL homes include offensive lineman Ricky Henry, who signed with the Chicago Bears; tight end Mike McNeill, who inked with the Indianapolis Colts; offensive lineman DJ Jones, who signed with the Miami Dolphins; and kicker Adi Kunalic, now a Carolina Panther. In addition, former UNK defensive end Mason Brodine signed with the Oakland Raiders. Ten NFL teams, including the Seahawks and Denver Broncos, open their training camps today.
