WEEKEND MOVIE WRAP-UP

The blockbuster superhero mash-up The Avengers was the top movie for the second weekend in a row and again broke a record getting there. After having the highest domestic box office debut in history last weekend, The Avengers took in the biggest second weekend haul ever, its $103.2 million easily besting the $75.6 million Avatar made in its second weekend, which was the previous record. Adding in the $95.4 million The Avengers added internationally, it has now topped $1 billion worldwide in just 19 days since its debut.

Opening far behind in second place was the horror comedy Dark Shadows, based on the cult TV soap opera of the same name that ran from 1966 to 1971. The movie re-teams director Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, with Depp starring as an 18th-century vampire who’s freed after being buried alive for 200 years and returns to his ancestral country manor in Maine in the 1970s. Co-starring are Michelle PfeifferHelena Bonham CarterEva GreenJackie Earle Haley and Jonny Lee Miller.

  • The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel broke into the top 10 at Number Eight as it expanded from just a few theaters in its second weekend. The movie stars Judi DenchBill NighyMaggie Smith and Tom Wilkinson in a story about older Brits looking to retire in India.
  • Debuting in 10th place in limited release was the comic drama Girl in Progress, starring Eva Mendesas a single mother with a precocious daughter.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH IS A FATHER: Chris Hemsworth is a father. The Avengers star and his wife Elsa Pataky welcomed a baby girl on Friday (May 11th). The actor, 28, told USA Today that they’ve named the baby India because “We love the country and love the name.”

KRIS HUMPHRIES MOCKS KANYE: Kris Humphries took a shot at his ex Kim Kardashian’s new boyfriend in a Funny or Die video. The NBA player stars in a new skit, in which talent agents are convincing him to brand himself as a jerk. When they give him a pair of striped white sunglasses similar to the onesKanye West famously sported in his “Stronger” video, Kris responds, “Guys, this feels terrible.” The agents then say, “Well, that’s cause you have the wrong sunglasses. BEN AFFLECK THANKS THE MOMS IN HIS LIFE: Ben Affleck is a great husband and son. The actor/director/activist gave a shout-out to the moms in his life on Sunday, saying on Facebook, “I want to say Happy Mother’s Day to the moms in my life: my mom Chris and my amazing wife Jennifer, who is an incredible, spectacular, world-class mom.” The message was part of a video that advocates for those raising children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

ASHLEY TISDALE REUNITES WITH BEAU: Ashley Tisdale is giving her relationship with Scott Speer another shot. The two split in December after two years of dating, but have been spotted together again over the past few weeks. Speer seemed to confirm the reunion reports on Twitter after congratulating Ashley on her new development deal with ABC.

NO CHARGES FOR LISA ROBIN KELLYThat 70s Show star Lisa Robin Kelly won’t face charges stemming from her recent domestic violence case. TMZ.com reported that the alleged victim — Kelly’s male roommate — has decided not to press charges against her. Because he refused to cooperate with authorities, it was impossible for them to pursue a case. The arrest caused a stir because of Kelly’s crazed appearance in her mug shot. She insists she was not drunk or high at the time of her arrest.

CHELSEA HANDLER DROPS OUT OF MOVIE: Chelsea Handler might be rethinking her career transition to acting. Variety reported that the 37-year-old has dropped out of the upcoming film The Mallbecause of scheduling conflicts. Gina Gershon will replace Chelsea in the drama, which “follows five suburban strangers whose paths cross over the course of one hellish night at a shopping mall, where a drug-addled madman goes on a shooting spree.” ‘VAMPIRE DIARIES’ SET BURNS DOWN: A popular set used for the CW’s Vampire Diaries burned down late last week. TMZ.com reported that The Mystic Grill — the center of their fictional town Mystic Falls — was devastated by a fire after a truck smashed into an electrical pole behind the building. No actors were on location as filming wrapped in April.

AMBER RILEY CLARIFIES ‘GLEE’ TWEET: Amber Riley says she’s not leaving Glee after all. The actress caused a stir after sending a tweet that implied she was done filming the Fox series. However she later clarified, “My tweet apparently has been misconstrued. I was not confirming I was leaving the show. Just stating that I would miss being in the classroom everyday with the cast and that would be changing. Thanks for the support guys 🙂 That’s the good and bad thing about twitter. It can be used to extinguish rumors but it also spreads them like wildfire!”

CATHERINE ZETA-JONES JOINS ‘RED 2’: Catherine-Zeta Jones has joined the case of Red 2. Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren will reportedly all be returning to the sequel to reprise their characters from the original.

CBS has cancelled CSI: Miami after ten years. The show is already off the air, having had its episode order cut to 19 to make room for another show. Star Eva LaRue recently said that she would be disappointed if the show didn’t get renewed since it didn’t have a proper send off. She told Kelly Ripa last month, “It’s not fair, we didn’t get to tie it up right. After 10 seasons, we ended in a bar. That doesn’t seem right.”

The CW is renewing Hart of Dixie, featuring Rachel Bilson and Jaime King, Gossip Girl, Nikita, The Vampire Diaries, and 90210. Among the high-profile shows that didn’t make the cut were Sarah Michelle Gellar’s drama Ringer and fantasy series The Secret Circle. The network also confirmed that they’ll run The Carrie Diaries, a Sex and the City prequel series, in the fall.

The Office will return for another season without Steve Carell. NBC announced its fall schedule, which included The Office, as well as a third season of The Voice. Meanwhile, even though they have not been cancelled, Smash and The Biggest Loser will be held back for the first few months of the season as six new series debut.

Two and a Half Men has officially been renewed for a tenth season. It had been widely reported that Ashton Kutcher and the gang would be back, but CBS had yet to confirm it until now. CBS also renewed The Big Bang Theory and Mike & Molly.

SEAN BEAN ARRESTEDGame of Thrones actor Sean Bean was arrested on Wednesday (May 9th) on suspicion of harassing his ex-wife Georgina Sutcliffe. A police source in London told People magazine, “A 53-year-old man attended a central London police station by appointment yesterday, where he was arrested on suspicion of harassment and bailed until a later date.” The Daily Mirror published a photograph of Bean leaving the police station, but law enforcement sources said he was not charged. Bean married Sutcliffe, his fourth wife, in 2008 and they divorced in 2010.

ANNA FARIS IS PREGNANT: Anna Faris and Chris Pratt are expecting their first child. A rep for the actress confirmed the happy news, adding that Faris is due in the fall. The couple tied the knot in 2009.

JOHN CENA GETTING DIVORCED: John Cena is getting divorced. The wrestling star filed for divorce from wife Elizabeth Huberdeau, whom he married in 2009. In the divorce petition, Cena called the marriage “irretrievably broken.” The couple reportedly had a prenup and they have no children.

BRUCE WILLIS SHOWS OFF NEW DAUGHTER: Bruce Willis has debuted Mabel, his six-week-old daughter. The actor’s wife posted a picture of the daddy-daughter duo on Twitter, writing, “A beautiful day in Budapest with the loves of my life. RUSSELL BRAND HOSTING MTV MOVIE AWARDS: Russell Brand will be hosting the MTV Movie Awards next month. The actor said after the announcement, “This MTV Movie Awards will be more impressive than The Avengers and you won’t have to wait an hour for someone to Hulk out.” Brand hosted the MTV Video Music Awards in 2008 and 2009, but this will be his first time taking the stage for the Movie Awards — which will air on June 3rd.

CONAN TO APPEAR ON LETTERMAN: Conan O’Brien will be a guest on The Late Show With David Letterman next week for the first time in 13 years. The two have a long history as Conan took over for Letterman as the host of Late Night in 1993. They were then briefly competitors in 2010 when Conan was promoted to host of the Tonight show — before the late night wars erupted and Jay Leno reclaimed the show. The interview will air on May 17th.

‘COUGAR TOWN’ MOVING TO TBS: Cougar Town is moving from ABC to TBS. Michael Wright, the president and head of programming for TBS, confirmed the news saying, “Cougar Town is a smart, whimsical sitcom that draws its humor from likable, relatable characters. We are thrilled to have Cougar Town moving to the TBS neighborhood as the network continues to expand its slate of original comedy series.” The fourth season will reportedly begin airing on its new network beginning in 2013.

JESSICA BIEL JOINS TWITTER: Jessica Biel has joined the ranks of celebrities on Twitter. The actress is communicating through the handle @jessicabiel and kicked off her social networking experience at Monday’s Met Gala. Her first tweet was a picture of her outfit along with the caption, “I can’t zip up my dress. Welcome to my world!” VIDAL SASSOON DIES AT 84: Vidal Sassoon has died at the age of 84. TMZ.com reported that he passed away from an unspecified illness at his home with his family by his side. Sassoon — famous for creating the “bob” haircut — is rumored to have been diagnosed with leukemia in 2009. He is survived by his fourth wife Rhonda Sassoon and three children.

OLIVIA MUNN DISCUSSES VERBALLY ABUSIVE STEPDAD: Olivia Munn didn’t have a picture perfect childhood. The actress discussed her verbally abusive stepfather in a new interview with Ocean Drive magazine, describing him as “the Devil.” She explained, “He would always say, ‘You’re not smart enough, pretty enough, you have no talent,’ and it would knock me down, but it wouldn’t keep me down. When [my stepfather] would be screaming his head off in the living room, I would hustle everybody into my room and launch into imitations of teachers or do scenes from movies. And that would take their minds off of the hell that was happening down the hall.”

RACHEL RAY FEUDING WITH MARTHA STEWART: Rachel Ray and Martha Stewart do not get along. The New York Post reported that Ray recently moved into Stewart’s old studio and ordered her staff to perform a ritual that would chase away negative spirits. A source told the Post, “There is bad blood between the two chefs. Martha has spoken openly about her disdain for Rachael.” Martha previously has said that Rachael’s style was “not good enough for me,” adding, “She’s more of an entertainer . . . with her bubbly personality, than she is a teacher, like me.”

JERRY SEINFELD RETURNING TO TV? Jerry Seinfeld is heading back to TV. Starpulse.com reported that Seinfeld is teaming up with Alec Baldwin, Ricky Gervais, and former writing partner Larry David for Comics and Cars, which will feature the gang test driving cars and trading automotive stories. Seinfeld recently tweeted, “Working on my New Thing. Shooting in Manhattan with the Great @alecbaldwin… New Seiny Gig Update: Always lovable Ricky Gervais and myself shooting today in City Island, NY… Seiny and LD (Larry David) back together again? CAMERON DIAZ REPORTEDLY REPLACING ANGELINA IN NEW MOVIE: Cameron Diaz is reportedly in “final negotiations” for Ridley Scott’s The Counselor. Deadline.com noted that Angelina Jolie was initially attached to the part, however her thriller Maleficent might have created a scheduling conflict.

‘AVENGERS’ SEQUEL CONFIRMED: Unsurprisingly — there will be a sequel to The Avengers. After the action film grossed a record-breaking $207.4 million domestically in its opening weekend, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the company is moving ahead on Avengers 2.
