Playhouse Sets Auditions for Jesus Christ Superstar

Jesus Christ Superstar Logo ApprovedAuditions for the first musical of the 2013/2014 NPCP Season, Jesus Christ Superstar, are set.

Auditions will be held December 11th and 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the Patty Birge Room at the Playhouse, 301 E. 5th.  Callbacks will be held December 13th if necessary.

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The musical started as a rock opera concept recording before its first staging on Broadway in 1971. The musical is loosely based on the Gospels’ accounts of the last week of Jesus’ life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion. It highlights political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus, struggles that are not in the Bible. The resurrection is not included. It therefore largely follows the form of a traditional passion play.

The cast calls for 18 men and 12 women.

Auditions are open to all interested parties age 17 and up.  Those auditioning should prepare 16 measures of a song to sing for the director.

Jesus Christ Superstar is directed by Lori Evans and is made possible, in part, by the support of the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment of the Arts.  It is produced through a special arrangement with the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization.

Performance dates are February 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16, 2014 with ticket sales beginning Monday, February 3rd.

New Program Teaches History Through Neb. Quilter

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new multimedia program is teaching pioneer history through the life of Grace Snyder, a nationally known quilter from Nebraska.

The “Tiny Stitches, Big Life” program uses Snyder’s quilts and life experiences to bring pioneer life to Nebraska elementary school students. It’s part of a larger project, “Stories of Nebraska Quilters.” Organizers plan to develop additional material about other Nebraskans who are remembered through their quilts.

Snyder was born in 1882, reared in a sod house in Custer County and married a Sandhills cowboy and rancher. She recounted her pioneer life in the 1963 book, “No Time on My Hands,” as told to her daughter, author Nellie Snyder Yost.

The program was developed by NET Learning Services, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Nebraska State Historical Society.

NPCC Music and Theater Departments to Present ‘Godspell’

godspellThe North Platte Community College Theater and Music Departments will present the musical “Godspell” by Stephen Swartz and John Michael Tebelak from Dec. 4-7 at the McDonald-Belton Theater.

The production, directed by NPCC theater director Ritch Galvan and NPCC music instructor Elizabeth Peters, will begin at 8 p.m. Dec. 4-6 with a matinee set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7.

Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew and featuring a sparkling score by Stephen Schwartz, Godspell boasts a string of well-loved songs, led by the international hit, “Day By Day.” As the cast performs “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” “All For The Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side,” the parables of Jesus Christ come humanly and hearteningly to life.

“We are very excited to bring musical theatre back to NPCC after a 15 year hiatus,” Galvan said, adding, “Godspell is going to be the first of many musical we will bring to audience of North Platte. This musical production is fun for all ages and shows off not just the talents of NPCC students, but also several community members who’ve lent their talents as well.”

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and can be purchased at the door.
