Neb. Monument Sets Winter Festival of Prairie Cultures

homestead-national-monument(AP) — The Homestead National Monument in southeast Nebraska has scheduled a winter festival that focuses on ethnic traditions.

The Winter Festival of Prairie Cultures is scheduled to run from Nov. 29 through Dec. 31. It will feature the winter traditions of people who lived on the Great Plains during the homesteading era. Cultures represented include Czech, French, German, Hispanic, Irish, Jewish, Polish, Scottish, Swedish, and Welsh.

Homestead National Monument of America is a unit of the National Park Service. The monument is situated four miles west of Beatrice, on Nebraska Highway 4.

Governor’s Arts Awards Nominations Due Friday

Nebraska-Arts-Council(AP) — The deadline is Friday for nominations for the Governor’s Arts Awards.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for March 25 at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Convention Center in La Vista.

Nominations may be submitted online at the Nebraska Arts Council website,http://www.nebraskaartscouncil.org/ .

The categories are Outstanding Artist, Emerging Leader, Business Leadership, Excellence in Arts Education, Heritage Award, Organizational Achievement and Thomas C. Woods III Partner in the Arts.

Lou Reed Dead at 71

“The Velvet Underground’s” frontman Lou Reed has died.

According to a report from Rolling Stone, died this morning of unknown causes.

The website TMZ says Reed received a liver transplant in may, and was hospitalized due to complications in June.  It is unknown if his death is related to the transplant.

Reed’s band, “The Velvet Underground,” rocked in the 60’s and 70’s with songs such as “Heroin,” “Sweet Jane,” “Walk on the Wild Side” and many more.  They are considered by many to be one of the most influential punk bands in history.

Reed was 71-years-old.

 

 

NPCC Music Department to Present Fall Concert on Oct. 29

NPCC-Knights-LogoThe North Platte Community College Music Department will present their fall concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the McDonald-Belton Theater on the South Campus of the college.

There will be a Halloween theme for the concert. Candy will be handed out at the end of the program. Students and directors will be appearing in costume and those who attend are encouraged to dress up as well.

The concert will feature the NPCC Choir, Select Choir and Jazz Band. The Choir, directed by Elizabeth Peters with Donna Pucket as collaborative accompanist, will perform selections including “Dry Bones,” “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd,” and “We May Not Be Vampires (But We’re Still Men).” The Select Choir, also directed by Peters, will perform “Africa” and “All the Pretty Little Horses.”

Members of the NPCC Choir are: Nicole Hines and Sonie Kuhlman of Gothenburg; Abby Kurtzer of Haxtun, Colo.; Matt Perry of Keenesburg, Colo.; *Baylea Vallier of Laramie, Wyo.; *Abi Bradley, *Kaleb Christensen, *Christian Farmer, *Amariah Gesinski, *Drake Heikes, Steven Marshall, *Jacob McNeel, Stacia Nutter, Amy Taft, Sara Savage, *Nikki Schmidt, Mariah Sprunk, Meshka Waya and *Kylie Wroot of North Platte; Mik Keeling of Sutherland; Frankie Lewis of Tryon; William Bartlett of  Wauneta; and Briana Dickerson of Westminster, Colo. The Jazz Band, directed by Ron Daly, will perform numbers including “Free Bird,” “25 or 6 to 4,” and “Any Way You Want It.”

Guest performers include Tori Daly on saxophone and Josh Hall on the guitar.

Concert to Benefit Wayne Tornado Victims

(AP) — A variety of bands are joining forces to help with the tornado cleanup and recovery efforts in Wayne.

Concerts are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

One concert will take place on Friday at the Wayne City Auditorium, from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, another concert will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Norfolk from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Admission for each night is $10, and those who attend are encouraged to dress in costume. Relief funds have also been established at all four banks in Wayne.

Peru St. Expect 27 Groups at Show Choir Event

peru-state-college(AP) — Peru State College expects 27 high school show choirs from Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas will attend its 42nd Annual Show Choir Festival next week.

Performances are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday in the College Theatre. Awards will be presented for the best high school show choir in each class. The performances are free and open to the public.

Peru State’s own show choir, the Misty Blues, will perform at 11 a.m. Tuesday and at 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
