In 1960, Connie Francis made her acting debut when filming began on the movie “Where the Boys Are.”

In 1967, the New York Times reported on a new noise reduction system developed by R. and D.W. Dolby. It was first used by a subsidiary of Elektra Records.

In 1969, Frank Zappa disbanded the Mothers of Invention. He said he was tired of performing for people who clapped for the “wrong reasons.”

In 1989, actor Kenneth Branagh married actress Emma Thompson.

In 1992, Sting and his longtime girlfriend Trudie Styler got married in England. It was his second marriage, her first.

In 1999, bassist Bobby Sheehan of Blues Traveler was found dead of a drug overdose in his apartment in New Orleans. He was 31.

Also in 1999, musician Fatboy Slim married British TV personality Zoe Ball in London. They have since separated.

In 2011, reality star Kim Kardashian married NBA star Kris Humphries in a lavish wedding taped for TV broadcast. She filed for divorce 72 days later.

On August 19th, 1964, The Beatles opened their first U.S. tour at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Other acts on the bill included the Righteous Brothers and Jackie DeShannon.

In 1967, “All You Need Is Love” by The Beatles hit No. 1 on the pop charts. That same day, Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and his wife, Maureen, had another child, a boy named Jason.

In 1973, singers Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge got married in Los Angeles. They divorced in 1979.

In 1977, comedian Groucho Marx died in Los Angeles. He was 86.

In 1980, Christopher Cross’ debut album went platinum.

In 2000, actresses Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche (HAYSH) announced they were breaking up. Just hours later, Heche was hospitalized after she wandered disoriented into a stranger’s home in Fresno County, California.

In 2008, sax player Leroi Moore of the Dave Matthews Band died of complications from an all-terrain vehicle accident two months earlier. He was 46.

Homestead National Monument Sets Open House for Civil War Exhibits

constitution(AP) — Homestead National Monument of America in southeast Nebraska has scheduled an open house for its newest special exhibits: “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” and “The Civil War in the West.”

The free open house is set to begin at 2 p.m. on Aug. 25 in the Education Center.

“Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” exhibit uses the U.S. Constitution as the thread to offer a different perspective on President Abraham Lincoln. The exhibit focuses on his struggle to meet the political and constitutional challenges of the war.

“The Civil War and the West” exhibit focuses on the fight for the natural resources of the western territories.

Homestead National Monument of America sits four miles west of Beatrice, along Nebraska Highway 4.

August 13th Entertainment

On August 13th, 1942, Walt Disney’s animated feature “Bambi” premiered at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

In 1965, Jefferson Airplane made its first appearance, at the opening of the Matrix Club in San Francisco.

In 1967, the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to allow Joan Baez to perform at Constitution Hall in Washington because of her opposition to the Vietnam War. She instead performed at an outdoor theater near the Washington Monument.

In 1971, saxophonist King Curtis was stabbed to death outside his New York home. He was 37. Curtis appeared on many records of the 1950’s and 1960’s including The Coasters’ hit “Yakety Yak.”

In 1977, Bachman-Turner Overdrive disbanded.

In 1980, four intruders robbed musician Todd Rundgren, his girlfriend and some friends at his house in Woodstock, New York. One of them reportedly hummed Rundgren’s hit “I Saw The Light” during the robbery.

In 1982, singer Joe Tex died of a heart attack in Texas at the age of 49. Among his hits were “Hold What You’ve Got” and “Skinny Legs and All.”

In 1990, Curtis Mayfield was paralyzed after a tower fell on him before a concert in Brooklyn, New York.

In 1995, R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe had surgery for a hernia.

In 1997, “South Park” made its debut on Comedy Central.

In 2011, high winds caused a stage to collapse at the Indiana State Fair just before Sugarland was about to perform. Seven people were killed.
