In Entertainment History August 12th

On August 12th, 1960, the Silver Beetles recruited drummer Pete Best. The band later became The Beatles, and Best was dropped in favor of Ringo Starr.

In 1966, John Lennon apologized at a news conference for his remark that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus. That same day, The Beatles started their last North American tour, in Chicago.

In 1967, Fleetwood Mac made its first appearance, at the London National Jazz and Blues Festival.

In 1982, actor Henry Fonda died at the age of 77.

In 1988, the controversial movie “The Last Temptation of Christ” opened in nine cities, despite objections by some Christians that the film was sacrilegious in its treatment of Jesus.

In 1992, avant-garde composer John Cage died in New York at age 79.

In 1993, the Red Hot Chili Peppers replaced guitarist Arik Marshall with Jesse Tobias, who was replaced by Dave Navarro three months later.

In 1994, Woodstock ’94 was held in Saugerties, New York. About 350,000 people saw the show, which included mudfights during Green Day’s and Nine Inch Nails’ sets and the Red Hot Chili Peppers dressed as human light bulbs.

In 1997, a Long Island handyman was arrested for impersonating John Ford Coley, of England Dan and John Ford Coley.

Salvation Army to Host BaconFest in Omaha

salvation-army(AP) — The Salvation Army will host BaconFest Omaha this weekend at its Kroc Center in southeast Omaha.

The Sunday afternoon festival is a fundraiser for the Kroc Center’s mission and activities. Funds raised from BaconFest Omaha will support Kroc Center programming and membership.

Activities include a Omaha area bands, vendor booths, a bacon-cooking competition and children’s play area. Each paid admission receives an all-day pass to the Kroc Center and $5 of “Bacon Bucks” vouchers to be used in voting for their favorite Farmland bacon cook-off creation.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Children 4 get in free. Tickets are available at Hy-Vee stores, Crave at Midtown Crossing and the Kroc Center.

On August 9, 1963, the British TV show “Ready Steady Go” premiered. Most of Britain’s most popular bands appeared on the show.

Also in 1963, singer Whitney Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey.

In 1967, concert officials at the Sunbury Jazz and Blues Festival in England ask Jerry Lee Lewis to leave the stage because they thought the crowd had gotten too wild during Lewis’ performance.

In 1969, actress Sharon Tate and four other people were found brutally murdered in Tate’s Los Angeles home. Cult leader Charles Manson and a group of his young disciples were later convicted of the crime.

In 1978, Muddy Waters performed for President Jimmy Carter at a White House picnic.

In 1991, singer Rick James pleaded innocent to charges he imprisoned, tortured and sexually assaulted a woman in his California home.

In 1995, Grateful Dead singer and guitarist Jerry Garcia died of a heart attack while undergoing drug rehabilitation. He was 53.

In 1999, guitarist Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs quit Oasis. Barely two weeks later, bassist Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan quit.

In 1960, Decca Records in Britain destroyed 25,000 copies of the song “Tell Laura I Love Her” by Ray Peterson. The company said the song was “too tasteless and vulgar for the English sensibility.”

In 1970, singer Bessie Smith finally received a marker for her grave in Philadelphia, 33 years after her death. Janis Joplin cited Smith as one of her influences and bought the marker for the grave.

In 1975, singer Hank Williams Jr. suffered severe head injuries when he fell while mountain climbing in Montana. He returned to performing months later.

In 1982, singer Mickey Thomas of Jefferson Starship married Sara Kendrick in San Francisco.

In 1986, singer David Crosby was paroled from a Texas prison. He had been serving time for drug and weapons charges.

In 1992, Metallica singer James Hetfield was injured by a stage explosion at a concert in Montreal. At that same show, Guns N’ Roses singer Axl Rose lost his voice and cut short their set. Fans rioted when the concert ended early.

In 1996, singer Mel Torme (tor-MAY’) was hospitalized after a stroke that left his left side weakened and affected his speech.

In 1999, violence broke out for the second night in a row in the parking lot outside a Dave Matthews Band concert in Hartford, Connecticut. Police say people outside the show threw bottles and rocks.

In 2001, actor Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were divorced after eleven years of marriage.

In 2004, a bus driver for the Dave Matthews Band dumped human waste from the bus into the Chicago River and onto a tour boat carrying more than 100 passengers. The band later settled with the state of Illinois, and the driver plead guilty to reckless conduct and pollution charges.

‘The Lorax’ Art Exhibition Opening at Omaha Museum

lorax(AP) — An exhibition of original art for Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” is scheduled to open Saturday at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha.

Theodore Geisel’s hand-drawn artwork is on loan from the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas.

The exhibition runs through Nov. 3. Admission is free.

On August seventh, 1963, Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello’s first movie together, “Beach Party,” was released.

In 1970, “Soul Train” made its debut on a Chicago TV station.

In 1974, actress Faye Dunaway married singer Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band. They divorced five years later.

In 1986, a judge in Los Angeles dismissed a lawsuit against Ozzy Osbourne. The lawsuit had been filed by the parents of a teenager who killed himself while listening to Osbourne’s “Suicide Solution.”

Also in 1986, actor Tom Selleck married Jillie Mack.

In 1990, Marlon Brando’s son Christian pleaded innocent in the murder of his half-sister’s boyfriend.

In 1991, charges of assault and property damage were filed against Axl Rose in connection with a riot during a Guns N’ Roses concert in the St. Louis area.

In 1995, rapper LL Cool J married Simone Johnson.

In 2011, singer Gavin DeGraw was attacked by a group of unknown assailants in New York. He suffered a concussion, a broken nose and black eyes.
