In 1967, Moby Grape released five singles simultaneously in their debut with the CBS label.

In 1968, the Ohio Express got their first gold single with “Yummy, Yummy, Yummy.”

In 1978, Jefferson Starship failed to perform at a festival in Germany because singer Grace Slick was unable to go onstage. Angry fans started a riot and caused over a million dollars in damage.

In 1989, Ringo Starr announced he would tour again for the first time in several years. His first All-Starr Band included Clarence Clemons, Joe Walsh, Billy Preston, and Nils Lofgren.

In 2000, Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson married Kristin Willits in Lexington, Kentucky.

In 2005, Soul Asylum bassist Karl Mueller (MYOO’-ler) died of throat cancer in Minneapolis. He was 41.

Nominations Sought for Next Nebraska State Poet

Nebraska-Arts-Council(AP) — The Nebraska Arts Council, Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Library Commission are seeking nominations for the next Nebraska state poet.

Nominations must be submitted online no later than midnight Central time on July 26. The online application site: https://nebraska.slideroom.com.

Nominations will be reviewed by the State Poet Selection Committee, which is composed of five people who are established members of Nebraska’s literary, cultural, education and academic communities. After the committee selects finalists, the governor will make the final selection.

The Nebraska state poet will be selected based on artistic excellence, exemplary professionalism, an established history of community service in the advancement of poetry in Nebraska, and the ability to present poetry and interact effectively with a public audience.

NE State Fair Already Preparing for 2014

nebstatefair(AP) — This year’s Nebraska State Fair is still two months away, but the fair’s officials have already begun preparing for next year’s fair.

The Nebraska State Fair website has already been updated with some information for the 2014 fair.

For this year’s fair, which begins Aug. 23, people can pay for gate admission and buy tickets for concerts.

Fair director Joseph McDermott says improvements have been OK’d for State Fair facilities, including WiFi connection upgrades to help smartphones and tablets perform better.

Construction of the Nebraska Building is also expected to be finished in time for the 2014 fair. The $5.4 million building will have exhibition space on the ground floor and administrative offices on the second.

Glenn Close to Speak About Mental Illness in Omaha

glenn-close(AP) — Actress Glenn Close is planning to visit Nebraska this fall to talk about the stigma of mental illness.

Close will visit Omaha on Oct. 3 as part of a community event designed to raise awareness about people affected by mental illnesses.

Close is passionate about the issue because her sister, Jessie, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when she was 51.

Statistics show that one in every four families is affected by a major mental illness.

On June 14th, 1953, Elvis Presley graduated from L.C. Humes High School in Memphis, Tennessee.

In 1961, country singer Patsy Cline suffered serious head and hip injuries in a car crash in Madison, Tennessee. A passenger in the other car was killed.

In 1965, Paul McCartney recorded “Yesterday.”

In 1970, Derek and the Dominoes made their live debut in Britain.

Also in 1970, the Grateful Dead released “Workingman’s Dead.”

In 1971, the first Hard Rock Cafe opened in London.

In 1972, up to 300 people tried to crash the gate at a Rolling Stones concert in Tucson, Arizona. Police were called in with tear gas to disperse the crowd.

In 1976, The Beatles “Rock ‘N’ Roll Music” anthology went gold, six years after the band broke up.

In 1979, Little Feat broke up. Two weeks later, founding member Lowell George died of a heart attack.

Toby Keith, Garth Brooks Plan Oklahoma Tornado Relief Concert

toby Keith(AP) — Another star-studded country music concert is planned to benefit victims of the deadly tornadoes in Oklahoma last month.

Toby Keith announced Thursday that his Oklahoma Twister Relief Concert will be held July 6 at the University of Oklahoma’s Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman. Joining Keith is fellow Oklahoman Garth Brooks and his wife, Trisha Yearwood. Other performers include Willie Nelson and Ronnie Dunn.

Organizers say the $25 tickets will go on sale June 21.

Keith is a native of Moore, where 24 people were killed in an EF5 tornado on May 20. Brooks, who lives in Owasso, says he’s honored to participate in the concert.

A concert last month hosted by Blake Shelton raised more than $6 million for the United Way of Central Oklahoma.

On June 13th, 1958, Frank Zappa graduated from Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, California.

In 1970, Christine McVie released a solo album, then announced her retirement from music. She was back within a year, joining her husband, John McVie, in Fleetwood Mac.

In 1972, singer Clyde McPhatter died in New York City of complications from heart, liver and kidney diseases. He was 38.

In 1980, Pat Benatar opened a home game for the Philadelphia Phillies by playing a brief set on a makeshift stage and dancing with the Phillies’ mascot, a large green duck.

In 1986, bandleader and clarinetist Benny Goodman died in New York at the age of 77.

In 1992, President Clinton upset rapper Sister Souljah by comparing her comments after the Los Angeles riots to something David Duke might say. Souljah had said, “If black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?”

In 1995, country singer Ty Herndon was arrested on charges of indecent exposure and drug possession, less than two hours before he was to perform at a police convention in Texas.

In 1996, two former employees of talk show host Montel Williams sued him, claiming he sexually harassed them. Four other women eventually joined the suit.

In 1998, a 25-year-old fan was struck by lightning while sitting on the lower deck of RFK Stadium in Washington during the Tibetan Freedom Concert. She survived with severe burns.
