Entertainment History for 5/20

On May 20th, 1954, Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock” was released. It didn’t catch on until it appeared on the soundtrack of “Blackboard Jungle” the following year.

In 1966, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who started a concert in Windsor, England, without bassist John Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon. When they finally showed up, Townshend hit Moon over the head with his guitar. Moon quit the band, but was back a week later.

In 1967, Jimi Hendrix signed his first U.S. recording contract, with Reprise (rih-PREEZ’) Records.

In 1971, Peter Cetera of the band Chicago was beaten by several men at a baseball game, apparently because they didn’t like the length of his hair.

In 1985, Daryl Hall and John Oates headlined a concert for the reopening of the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. The show benefited the United Negro College Fund.

In 1989, actress-comedian Gilda Radner died of ovarian cancer in Los Angeles. She was 42.

In 1993, the final episode of “Cheers” was broadcast on NBC.

In 1995, Connie Chung was fired as co-anchor on the “CBS Evening News.”

Also in 1995, singer Don Henley married Sharon Summerall.

In 1998, actor Charlie Sheen was admitted to a Los Angeles hospital for a drug overdose.

Nettles says Friday in a news release that she is working with Rick Rubin and will release the album in the fall.

Rumors that Nettles would release a solo album have been prevalent for a while. Grammy Award-winning Sugarland includes Kristian Bush and is one of country music’s most successful and honored acts. The duo remains together, but each is working solo currently.

The news comes six months after the 38-year-old singer had her first child, a son, with husband Justin Miller.

Nettles says in the release she is “absolutely thrilled and wholly proud” to work with Rubin, an acclaimed producer who helped country act The Dixie Chicks win a best album Grammy.

Pickler Picked to Entertain at the Nebraska State Fair

kellie-picklerDescribed as a “Force of Nature,” Kellie Pickler has been signed to open the Nebraska State Fair Entertainment Series on Friday, August 23rd at 7:30pm.  The concert is free with wristband.

According to State Fair Events and Entertainment Director, Chelsey Jungck, “Kellie followed her restless small-town dream to the front porch of the country music world by first displaying her talents to a national audience on American Idol.  Along with her wit and humor, Kellie is a woman of strength and substance under the blond-haired, light hearted exterior.”

Kellie Pickler’s first two albums established her as both a singer and songwriter to be reckoned with co-writing her hits “Red High Heels,” “I Wonder” and the Top Ten Hit, “Best Days of Your Life.”  Kellie’s single “Tough” was her first release in more than a year.  Her album “100 Proof” gave Kellie the opportunity to write many of the songs on the album.  Pickler is a bonafide singer songwriter, a 2013 contestant on Dancing with the Stars, and has been a hit on USO Tours to troops stationed overseas.

Jungck says, “Kellie writes what her soul tells her to. She is true to her music and she knows fans of country music will appreciate and relate to her musical stories of real life.”

While the concert is free with wristband, those wanting reserved seat tickets for the concert may sign up for the State Fair Fan Club online. For $30, members will receive one reserved section seat ticket, one gate admission, a fan club pin and fan club credentials.  Fan Club sign up will begin later this spring.

Former Michael Jackson Defender Now Says the Singer Abused Him

Wade Robson
Wade Robson

(AP) — A TV choreographer who testified that Michael Jackson never abused him as a child has now filed a claim against the singer’s estate claiming years of abuse by the pop superstar.

Wade Robson’s attorney Henry Gradstein writes in a statement that his client was abused by the pop superstar over a seven-year period. Robson was the first witness to testify in Jackson’s defense against child molestation accusations that ended with the singer’s acquittal in 2005.

The accusations have been forcefully denied by lawyers for Jackson’s estate and the singer’s criminal defense attorney.

The details of Robson’s filing remain sealed by a Los Angeles probate court.

Gradstein writes that strain from the abuse led Robson, a choreographer on Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” to suffer a breakdown last year.
