‘Identity Thief” Rakes in $36.6 Mil at the Box Office

Identity-Thief“Identity Thief” has turned out to be the real thing at the box office.

The comedy starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy debuted at No. 1 with a $36.6 million opening weekend.

“Identity Thief” opened solidly despite the winter storm that buried much of the Northeast. Distributor Universal Pictures estimates the storm might have choked off as much as 10 percent of the movie’s business.

According to studio estimates Sunday, the previous weekend’s top movie, the zombie romance “Warm Bodies,” fell to No. 2 with $11.5 million. That raises its domestic total to $36.7 million.

The weekend’s other new wide release, Steven Soderbergh’s thriller “Side Effects,” had a modest opening of $10 million, coming in at No. 3.

‘Warm Bodies’ Brings in $20 Mil at the Box Office

Warm-BodiesThe love-struck zombies of “Warm Bodies” swarmed the box office on Super Bowl weekend with a $20 million opening.

The Lionsgate PG-13 film easily led the box office, according to studio estimates Sunday. The weekend of the Super Bowl always means a significant slide in movie-going on Sunday, but “Warm Bodies” still lured many teenage fans.

The film is about a zombie whose love for a human redeems him. Lionsgate, which also released the “Twilight” saga, is calling it a “rom-zom-com” for its mix of humor, romance and the supernatural.

Action films continued to fare poorly in 2013, as Sylvester Stallone’s “Bullet to the Head” opened with just $4.5 million.

Frank Ocean Says He Won’t Press Charges Against Chris Brown

frank-ocean-and-chris-brownFrank Ocean says he won’t pursue criminal charges against Chris Brown, who is alleged to have punched Ocean in a recent fight.

The R&B star wrote on his Tumblr page Saturday that he wants peace instead of criminal charges or a civil lawsuit.

Brown is under investigation for his role in a fight outside a West Hollywood recording studio on Jan. 27. Witnesses told Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies that Brown punched someone during an argument over a parking space.

Authorities didn’t identify the victim, but the celebrity website TMZ said the fight involved Ocean later tweeted that he “got jumped by Chris and a couple guys” and suffered a finger cut.

Brown has not commented on the allegation.
