Kubat and Dilday Earn Big Ten Honors

Lincoln – Following a 4-1 week for the Nebraska baseball team, that included a sweep of the nationally-ranked Texas Longhorns, senior Kyle Kubat was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week and freshman Elijah Dilday was named Big Ten Co-Freshmen of the Week by the conference office on Tuesday morning. The Huskers have earned three weekly awards from the league office this season, as Ryan Boldt was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Feb. 23.

One day after being tabbed as one of Collegiate Baseball’s Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week, Kubat earned his first career weekly honor from the Big Ten office. The senior lefty has been lights out for the Huskers on Saturdays this season and was on top of his game against the No. 16 Longhorns. Kubat tossed 8.0 shutout inning and notched a career-high nine strikeouts for the second straight week. Following a two-out single by Brooks Marlow in the fourth, Kubat retired the final 13 Longhorns he faced. It was the senior’s third career outing of at least 8.0 innings and trailed only his 8.2-inning effort against Michigan at last season’s Big Ten Tournament.

Kubat, along with relievers Jake Hohensee, Colton Howell and Jeff Chesnut limited the Longhorns to four hits and three walks on the day, while piling up 19 strikeouts. The most strikeouts by a Husker staff since 2009 when NU notched 22 punch outs in a 15 inning game against Louisiana-Lafayette. After the Longhorns produced three hits through the first three innings, they then didn’t record another hit until Ben Johnson led off the 14^th with a single. Texas totaled just seven base runners and had a runner in scoring position only twice all game.

After missing the first 20 games of the year with a shoulder injury to his non-throwing arm, Dilday has quickly made his impact on the Husker offense and defense. The St. Charles, Mo., native started all five of NU’s games last week in left field and hit .462 on the week with at least one hit in every game. The 6-1 Dilday notched his first career multi-hit game, including a two-out RBI double in the third, in NU’s sweep clinching win over the Longhorns on Sunday. Dilday struck out once all week, while slugging .538 with an on-base percentage of .500, and he also played stellar defense with multiple diving catches.

NFL Salary Cap Increases $10 Million to Top $143 Million

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL’s salary cap is going up $10 million to $143.28 million for the 2015 season.

All 32 teams and the players’ union were notified Monday of the increase, the second straight season the cap went up by at least $10 million. Adding in benefits, the league says the projected player costs will be $180.775 million per team.

The NFL’s business year starts March 10, when free agency begins.

The salary cap is determined by a series of NFL revenue streams, with the players receiving 46 percent to 48 percent of those revenues, depending on the year.

Pelicans hold off Nuggets 99-92 for 5th Straight Win

DENVER (AP) — Tyreke Evans scored 22 points, Dante Cunningham drew a key charge late in the fourth quarter and the New Orleans Pelicans extended their winning streak to five games by holding off the struggling Denver Nuggets 99-92 on Sunday night.

Eric Gordon added 18 points and Omer Asik grabbed 16 rebounds for the Pelicans, who were without All-Star forward Anthony Davis for a fourth straight game after he re-injured his right shoulder on Feb. 21. The Pelicans are 4-0 in Davis’ absence to remain in the playoff conversation.

Denver dropped its 10th straight at the Pepsi Center, its longest home skid since losing 11 in a row during the 1997-98 season.

Danilo Gallinari had 21 points for Denver, including a half-court shot to end the third quarter that revved up the crowd. The Nuggets fell to 0-6 since the All-Star break.

Lincoln Woman Arrested for Stealing Dog from Ex-Boyfriend

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska woman has been charged with breaking into her ex-boyfriend’s home and stealing the dog they once shared.

The 21-year-old woman and her 23-year-old fiancee were both charged Friday.

Lincoln Police officer Katie Flood says the ex-boyfriend returned home Thursday to find his sliding glass door had been forced open, and his blind and deaf dachshund named Charlii was missing.

The ex-boyfriend told police that his ex-girlfriend had recently challenged his ownership of Charlii even though he had been caring for the dog ever since they broke up two years ago.

When police contacted the woman she denied stealing the dog until Charlii wandered out from the back of the apartment.

Creighton Tops Xavier in OT, 79-72

CINCINNATI (AP) — Rick Kreklow scored 17 points and led five players into double-figure scoring as Creighton knocked off Xavier in overtime, 79-72 on Wednesday night.

Dee Davis hit the first of two free throws with :34 left to tie the game at 65-65, but missed a go-ahead free throw that could have decided the game in regulation.

Matt Stainbrook and Davis each converted a pair of free throws in overtime, but Davis’ 3 with 1:26 left was the Musketeers’ lone field goal of the extra period. Xavier was just 1 for 6 from the field in the final two minutes.

Creighton (11-13 2-9 Big East) closed it out by going 6 for 6 from the line in the final :16.

Groselle finished with 15 points for the Bluejays, who shot 45.8 percent from the field (27 of 59).

Jalen Reynolds led Xavier with 17 points as the Musketeers (14-9, 5-6) were just 22 of 57 from the field.

Pro Bowl to have Narrower Goal Posts, Longer Kicks on PATs

PHOENIX (AP) — The NFL will have narrower uprights and longer kicks for extra-point tries at the Pro Bowl.

The NFL has discussed changes in extra points to make the kicks more difficult and experimented with longer tries during the preseason.

For Sunday’s Pro Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium, the uprights will be narrowed from 18.6 to 14 feet on extra-point tries. The kick also will be moved back from the 2 to the 15, making it essentially a 33 1/2-yard field goal.

NFL kickers made 99.6 percent of their PAT tries in 2013 and 99.3 this season.

NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent made the announcement during a Pro Bowl news conference on Tuesday.

No. 16 Nebraska Surges late to beat Purdue 69-59

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Rachel Theriot made all seven of her free throw attempts and finished with 16 points to help No. 16 Nebraska beat Purdue 69-59 on Monday.

Hailie Sample scored 15 points for Nebraska (14-3, 4-2 Big Ten), Brandi Jeffery had 13 and Tear’a Laudermill added 10. Emily Cady grabbed 13 rebounds and had five assists to help the Cornhuskers win their fourth consecutive conference game.

Nebraska scored 15 first-half points off of 12 Purdue turnovers on its way to a 33-24 halftime lead.

Whitney Bays recorded her ninth straight double-double for Purdue (9-9, 3-4) with 14 points and 14 rebounds. April Wilson added a career-high 20 points as the Boilermakers lost their fourth game in a row for the first time since 2010.

Bays hit two free throws to cut Purdue’s deficit to 53-49, but Theriot started an 8-0 spurt with a 3-pointer and capped it with a three-point play with 3:04 left.

Peyton Manning to Miss Pro Bowl with Thigh Injury

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Peyton Manning is skipping the Pro Bowl because his right thigh injury hasn’t gotten much better in the week since the Denver Broncos were bounced from the playoffs.

Manning calls it “a great honor” to be selected to the game and he’s “always taken the obligation to play in it very seriously.”

He adds: “I’ve believed that, if healthy, it’s a player’s responsibility to play in the game because of what it means to be voted in by your peers and the fans.”

Manning was injured late in the first half of a game at San Diego on Dec. 14 and missed a handful of snaps before returning to play the entire second half. He didn’t miss any more time with the injury.

Ohio State, Oregon Title Game will Crown a ‘True Champion’

DALLAS (AP) — Ohio State and Oregon will meet in a game that has never been for a trophy that has never been raised.

The winner of Monday night’s matchup can be called the truest champion in the history of major college football.

The first College Football Playoff national championship game matches the second-seeded Ducks and fourth-seeded Buckeyes at AT&T Stadium.

The days of bowls, polls and the BCS having the final say about who is No. 1 in college are over.

Oregon and Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota are in search of the program’s first title.

Ohio State is looking for its fifth championship and first under coach Urban Meyer. In his third season with the Buckeyes, Meyer could become the second coach to win a national title with two schools.

3 AFC Teams can Clinch Divisions this Week

NEW YORK (AP) — The Patriots, Broncos and Colts can clinch their division titles this week.

New England (10-3) hosts Miami (7-6) and will own the NFC East with a victory. The Patriots can earn an AFC first-round playoff bye if they win while Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati lose, or win and the Colts, Steelers and Broncos lose.

Denver gets the AFC West crown by beating San Diego. Indy owns the AFC South by beating Houston this Sunday.

The Broncos get a first-round playoff bye with a win and losses by the Colts and Steelers, or by the Colts and Bengals — provided Denver has a strength-of-schedule tiebreaker over Pittsburgh.

Denver also can get at least a wild card with a loss and defeats by Miami, Houston, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, or Miami, Houston, Baltimore and Cleveland, or Miami, Houston and Baltimore, plus a Pittsburgh win.
