LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A former Nebraska football player has pleaded guilty to federal gun and drug charges.

26-year-old Benjamin Martin made the pleas Monday at a hearing in Lincoln.

Authorities say a passer-by found Martin slumped over in his car in a Lincoln parking lot on Dec. 20. When officers awoke Martin, he opened his car door and rifle rounds spilled into the parking lot. Officers say they found a rifle, more than $48,500 in cash and methamphetamine in the car and later found more meth in a storage unit rented in Martin’s name.

Martin began playing defensive tackle for the Huskers in 2007, but his college career ended later when he was given a medical hardship scholarship.

Hendrickson, of Shickley, was fatally injured. The two people in the SUV were treated at a nearby hospital and released.

Duffy, Royals Keep Cardinals Down 6-0

kc-royalsST. LOUIS (AP) — Danny Duffy worked six innings of one-hit ball and Alex Gordon homered to start a breakout three-run seventh for the Kansas City Royals in a 6-0 victory over the suddenly punchless St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night.

The Royals had just two singles off Shelby Miller (6-5) in a game that had been scoreless before they opened the seventh with four straight hits. Gordon’s fifth homer ended a 15-inning scoreless drought and Mike Moustakas capped the rally with a two-run double.

Matt Holliday had two singles and a walk for the Cardinals, who have been shut out in consecutive games and have single-digit hit totals the last four games.

Duffy (3-5) struck out five and walked one, rebounding from consecutive losses in which he surrendered 10 earned runs in 10 innings.

Dan Marino Files Concussion Lawsuit Against NFL

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino is among the latest group of football players to file a concussion-related lawsuit against the National Football League.

The 52-year-old former Miami Dolphins quarterback is one of 15 former players who filed a lawsuit in federal court in Philadelphia last week.

Marino and the other 14 plaintiffs join more than 4,800 others who have alleged the NFL misled players about the long-term dangers of concussions. The NFL has denied those claims.

The lawsuit doesn’t specify any medical problems suffered by the plaintiffs including Marino, who retired in 1999. It seeks unspecified damages and medical monitoring.

The NFL and the original group of players agreed on a $765 million settlement last August. But the settlement was rejected by a federal judge in January.

Lineman Returns to His Love: the Football Field

Derek-Wolfe-Denver-Broncos-ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The seizure, the weight loss, the false-start of a comeback. Derek Wolfe endured them all while always keeping one goal in mind: Getting back on the football field.

That the Broncos defensive lineman kept football on the front burner through the difficult times is a testament to the third-year veteran’s love of the game. This was not, by any means, your typical football injury.

Wolfe suffered a seizure during the bus ride to the airport for Denver’s flight to Kansas City last Nov. 29. He ended up in the hospital for several days, and was put in a medically induced coma while doctors performed procedures to rule out a brain tumor.

GERING, Neb. (AP) — A Wyoming teenager charged with murder in the death of a western Nebraska jail guard has been sentenced for his role in a convenience store robbery last year.

15-year-old Dylan Cardeilhac of Torrington, Wyoming, was sentenced Thursday in Scotts Bluff District Court to eight to 15 years in prison for aiding in the robbery of a Nebraska convenience store. Cardeilhac is one of two teens accused of being involved in the crime.

Cardeilhac has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder in the strangling of 24-year-old corrections officer Amanda Baker. He has pleaded not guilty. On Thursday, a judge postponed the start of his trial after a defense attorney requested more time to research evidence in the case.

Officials ID 3 Men Killed in Nebraska Crash

fatal-accident(AP) — Authorities have identified three people killed in the rollover crash of a sport utility vehicle in Pierce County earlier this week that also injured six others.

Pierce County Attorney Verlyn Luebbe tells the Lincoln Journal Star (http://bit.ly/1nTz2HS) that the Monday morning crash on Highway 81 in northeast Nebraska killed 41-year-old Pablo Chilel Escobar; 29-year-old Mario Adan DeJesus Pinedo; and 24-year-old Hugo Iglecias Moreno.

Those men and six others in the vehicle were ejected from the SUV when it left the highway and rolled.

Luebbe says it appears a tire blew out, causing the 31-year-old driver to lose control. Investigators say the men —none of whom were wearing seat belts — were on their way to work at a construction site when the crash occurred.

Committee Won’t Dictate Number of Conference Games

College Football Playoff NCAAIRVING, Texas (AP) — College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock says the selection committee does not want to dictate how many conference games leagues play.

Hancock and the conference commissioners are meeting this week to work out the remaining details of the four-team playoff that will replace the Bowl Championship Series this season.

The Southeastern Conference recently announced it will stay with an eight-game league schedule instead of going to nine games. The Pac-12 and Big 12 play nine league games and the Big Ten is moving to nine. The Atlantic Coast Conference plays eight league games, plus five of its teams will now play Notre Dame each season.

Hancock says the “totality” of a team’s schedule will be evaluated by the selection committee for its difficulty. The number of conference games won’t matter.

Kansas City’s Cain to DL with Groin Strain

Lorenzo-Cain-Kansas-City-RoHOUSTON (AP) — Kansas City outfielder Lorenzo Cain has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain.

Cain was injured trying to beat a throw to first base in the ninth inning on Wednesday night. He is hitting .333 with five RBIs and two stolen bases in 12 games this season.

Manager Ned Yost says Cain is: “still sore in his leg so … we’ll give him time to get this out of the way. Hopefully it won’t be any more than 15 days, but we’ll see.”

The team recalled left-hander Justin Marks from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday. Marks went 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA in one start and two relief appearances for the Storm Chasers.
