Architectural Firm Selected for Neb. Veterans Home

DHHS(AP) — Nebraska officials have selected an architectural firm to build the new Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney.

The Department of Health and Human Services said Friday that Wilkins Hinrichs Stober Architects will be the lead firm on a team of nine consultants. No contract will be signed between the state and the firm until the federal government grants funds required for the project.

The department says Wilkins Hinrichs Stober Architects, which are based in Kearney, have planned and designed more than 100 senior care projects.

In July, Gov. Dave Heineman announced that Kearney would be the new location for the veterans home. The decision angered some residents in Grand Island, where the home has been located for more than a century.

Huskers Look to Knock off Unbeaten Buckeyes

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska basketball team looks to snap a two-game losing streak on Saturday, as the Huskers travel to Columbus, Ohio, for a matchup with No. 3 Ohio State.

Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. at Value City Arena and the game will be carried nationally on BTN (Ch. 610 on DirecTV, Chs. 439 and 9500 on Dish; Chs. 2, 1333 on Time Warner Cable) with Eric Collins and Jim Jackson on the call. The game will also be available online and on mobile devices on BTN2Go.

The Huskers (8-5, 0-1 B1G) enter Saturday’s game with an 8-5 record after dropping a 67-57 setback at No. 22 Iowa on Tuesday evening. In that game, the Huskers cut a 20-point deficit to 60-55 with under two minutes remaining, but Iowa hit enough free throws in the final minute to hold on. Nebraska, which was last in the Big Ten in rebounding, enjoyed a 44-42 advantage on the glass against Iowa, but could not overcome 30 percent shooting from the floor against the Hawkeyes.

If the Huskers are to pull their first upset against a top-five team away from Lincoln since 1994 on Saturday, the Huskers will need another strong rebounding effort and create some points against a Buckeye squad that leads the Big Ten in scoring defense at 55.1 points per game.

In the loss against Iowa, Nebraska put four players in double figures and received strong performances from sophomores Terran Petteway and Walter Pitchford. Petteway led all scorers with 20 points – his third straight 20-point game – and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds, while Pitchford put together his best game at Nebraska with 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

Nebraska and Michigan State are the only Big Ten teams on the road twice during the opening week, and the Huskers will be tested by an Ohio State (14-0, 1-0 BIG) team which is one of the last eight remaining unbeaten teams in the country. LaQuinton Ross leads a balanced OSU attack with 13.8 points per game, while All-Big Ten guard Aaron Craft averages 9.4 points, 5.0 assists and a Big Ten-best 2.5 steals per game.

Report Ranks Neb. 5th for Volunteerism

volunteerLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new report says Nebraska has one of the nation’s highest volunteerism rates, with more than one in three residents who stepped up to serve last year.

The report by the Corporation for National and Community Service says Nebraska ranks fifth nationally, with 36 percent of residents volunteering in 2012. More than 494,000 volunteers contributed a combined 50.8 million hours’ worth of time.

The findings were announced Friday by Nebraska first lady Sally Ganem, the honorary head of the state’s volunteer service commission. The commission works to encourage community involvement, and sponsors an annual statewide week of service in April.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that promotes volunteerism.

Abdullah Earns AP All-America Honors

Ameer-Abdullah-Nebraska-Huskers-FootballThe list of honors for Nebraska junior I-back Ameer Abdullah continued to grow on Tuesday, as he was named a third-team All-American by the Associated Press.

Abdullah was one of six running backs to earn All-America honors and he was joined on the third team by Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde. Boston College’s Andre Williams and Arizona’s Ka’Deem Carey were the first-team running backs, while Bishop Sankey of Washington and Auburn’s Tre’ Mason were on the second team.

The 5-9, 190-pound Abdullah has rushed for 1,568 yards this season, while rushing for 100 yards or more in 10 of 12 games. His rushing total is the fifth-best in school history and the most rushing yards by a Nebraska player since the 1997 season when Ahman Green rank for 1,877 yards.

Abdullah’s rushing yardage total lead the Big Ten while his average of 130.7 yards per game ranks second in the conference and seventh in the country. Abdullah has also posted 1,859 all-purpose yards this season, to rank No. 7 on the single-season list in the catgory. He is in position to post just the third 2,000-yard all-purpose yardage season in school history.

Abdullah’s selection marks the fifth straight season Nebraska has had at least one player named to the Associated Press All-America team. Overall, the Huskers have had nine AP All-Americans in the past five seasons.

Abdullah was one of 15 players from the Big Ten Conference named to one of the three AP All-America teams.

The game, which will be televised nationally on ESPN2, was originally scheduled for 3 p.m. (central), but was moved to an earlier start because of the Bearcats’ appearance in the Belk Bowl that afternoon. Geminids Meteor Shower Ramps Up Friday Night

meteor-showerCAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — It’s time for the December sky show.

The annual Geminids (JEM’-i-nids) meteor shower — the most intense of the year — will peak Friday night. But the best viewing may be early Saturday, once the moon sets. Between 100 and 120 meteors are expected every hour at peak time. But scientists say the bright moon will interfere and reduce the number of visible meteors by half. That’s why the best shot for viewing will be closer to dawn on Saturday.

The Geminids come from a small asteroid named 3200 Phaethon, which passes quite close to the sun. Its trail of dust and debris is what makes up the Geminids. Earth passes through this stream of debris every December.

The meteor shower extends from Thursday through Monday.

Tri-City Falls Short In Omaha, 3-1

tcstormOMAHA, Neb. – An early power play goal put the Omaha Lancers (20-3-2) in front for good as they defeated the Tri-City Storm (6-16-2) 3-1 at the Ralston Arena on Wednesday night.

The Storm got a tally late in the second period from Chris Wilkie, a native of Omaha, and 22 saves from goaltender Jacob Johansson to keep them alive in the until a late empty net goal.

A tripping penalty to Storm defenseman Jalen Schulz 1:02 into the game gave the Lancers a man-advantage and the USHL’s leading scorer made it count. Center Tyler Vesel found the back of the net for the 21st time at 1:49 of the opening frame and made it 1-0 Omaha.

The Lancers had multiple chances to extend the lead in the first frame, outshooting the Storm 8-5, but Tri-City kept it a one-goal game at the end of one.

But Luca Frigo found the back of the net a minute and nine seconds into the middle period and extended the Omaha lead to 2-0.

Wilkie put Tri-City on the board at 13:37 of the second, finding a loose rebound in front off a shot from defenseman Sean Lang. It was Wilkie’s first tally of the season in his hometown and Lang’s first point since joining the team in a trade from Muskegon on Oct. 24.

The Storm gained some momentum later in the second and worked hard in the third period but they couldn’t solve Lancers’ netminder Hayden Hawkey, who finished with 21 saves.

The final shot count was in favor of Omaha, 25-22.

An empty net goal by Ryan Tait sealed the win for the Lancers, their fifth over the Storm this season.

Tri-City now returns home for a weekend series with the Youngstown Phantoms. Friday’s game gets underway at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday’s will be an afternoon affair at 3:05.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Thomas Aldworth, Joey DiBenedetto and Patrick Curry, along with defenseman Cutler Martin.…

NCAA Women’s Tournament Back to Neutral Sites, Nebraska Hosts

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsNEW YORK (AP) — The NCAA women’s basketball regionals are going back to neutral sites.

The championship committee announced Wednesday that Oklahoma City, Sacramento, Greensboro and Albany will host the 2015 regionals. The committee received criticism this Fall from some coaches about the move to have regionals on campus for this season’s tournament.

“The committee heard the concerns from the coaching community in protecting neutrality at the regional rounds and acted accordingly,” said Anucha Browne, NCAA vice president, women’s basketball championships. “In looking for ways to improve the student-athlete experience, the committee felt a move to neutral regional sites was in the best interest of the championship.”

Stanford, Notre Dame, Louisville and Nebraska will host games in March with the chance to go to the Final Four on the line.

“I’m so pleased to see the committee recognize the importance of neutral sites in order to preserve the integrity of the tournament,” Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said. “I believe they are as happy as the coaches are that we will be able to play on neutral courts for the regionals moving forward.”

The first two rounds in 2015 again will be played on campus sites with the top 16 seeded teams in the tournament hosting the sub-regionals.

The Final Four will be in Tampa. There was talk of trying to move it up two days to a Friday-Sunday format, but while still possible it is unlikely that it will occur in 2015.

Sites for the Division II and Division III Final Fours were also unveiled. The possibility remains that all three levels may play their championship games in Indianapolis in 2016 over the same weekend.

Complaint Dismissed Against Neb. Judge

Judge Joseph Bataillon
Judge Joseph Bataillon

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A state commission that oversees judges will not investigate a district judge who told a 16-year-old state ward who was seeking an abortion that doing so would “kill the child inside you.”

The Nebraska Commission on Judicial Qualifications on Friday rejected the complaint filed earlier this year against Douglas County District Court Judge Peter Bataillon by two abortion rights groups.

The groups, NARAL Pro-Choice America and RH Reality Check, also submitted in October an online petition with nearly 90,000 signatures to the commission urging an investigation into Bataillon, who was once chairman of an Omaha anti-abortion group.

But the commission said it is prohibited from taking any action against a judge without clear and convincing evidence of fraud, corrupt motive or bad faith.
