NPHS Students Team Up with UNL Extension to Promote ‘Get Fit’ Day

get-fit-studentsNorth Platte High School Students are teaming up with the University of Nebraska Extension to promote “Get Fit” Day in North Platte.

Extension Educator, Brenda Aufdenkamp, says each student in Anne O’Connor’s Introduction to Education class and a peer will teach as 4-H Healthy Living Ambassadors to promote healthy living.

Aufdenkamp says 15 other Nebraska youth were selected as members of the state-wide team.

The students will receive training on educating young people about nutrition and making healthy choices.

The event will be held in North Platte on September 26th.

Columbus Man Charged with Distributing Child Pornography

handcuffs(AP) — A 39-year-old Columbus man has been charged with two counts of distributing child pornography.

Police arrested Edward Johnson after received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that led to a five-month investigation.

Platte County Judge Frank Skorupa appointed a public defender to represent Johnson and set Johnson’s bond at $150,000. His next hearing has been set for Sept. 12.

Police say Internet records show that an account belonging to Johnson was used to post photos of child pornography.

Merger Creating New Banking Entity in Nebraska

geneva-state-bank(AP) — The merger of two Nebraska banks will create a new banking entity: Heartland Bank.

The merger of Geneva State Bank and State Bank of Riverdale will create a bank with more than $350 million in total assets.

The merger is expected to be completed before year’s end, pending regulatory approval.

John Wilkins is chairman and CEO of Geneva State Bank, and he says the merger “makes a lot of sense to both communities we serve.”

New signage reflecting the change to Heartland Bank will be added in the first quarter of 2014.

Geneva has operations in Fairmont, Geneva, Grafton, Hastings, Kearney and Shickley. Riverdale has operations in Kearney, Ord and Riverdale.

18-Year-Old Charged in Nebraska Cemetery Vandalism

grave-site(AP) — An 18-year-old Saronville man has been charged with felony criminal mischief, accused of vandalizing an old cemetery in south-central Nebraska.

Robert Kelly Jr. surrendered on Wednesday after an arrest warrant was issued. He has since bonded out of Hamilton County Jail. A public phone listing for him couldn’t be found. Online court records don’t list the name of his attorney.

Kelly is due back in court for arraignment on Tuesday.

A man who lives near Farmers’ Valley Cemetery discovered the damage on Aug. 20. Nearly 50 gravestones had been pushed over and some had been damaged beyond repair.

The cemetery was established in 1876 along the banks of the Big Blue River south-southwest of Henderson.

Tiny Oklahoma Town Tries to Rid Water Supply of Worms

worms(AP) — A northeast Oklahoma town is temporarily without a water supply after city workers found worms in the municipal water tower.

The worms showed up in the drinking water supply in Colcord, a town of 815 people about 80 miles east of Tulsa. Vice Mayor Cody Gibby says the worms are a type of earthworm that range from a half-inch to an inch long.

Gibby says the worms are passing through water filters and getting into distribution lines. The town shut off its drinking water Tuesday night with plans to flush the water system out and scrub the water tower clean.

Classes are canceled Wednesday at Colcord schools, and bottled water is available for residents.

Omaha Woman, 87, Says She’s Got a Gun for the Next Crook

granny-with-a-gun(AP) — An 87-year-old Omaha woman says she’s got a gun for the next crook who wants to steal from her and her husband.

Mauricette and Albert Albin were robbed of personal papers on Saturday. It was the second time the Albins have been crime victims in their south-central Omaha home.

Last year someone pretending to deliver newspapers stole Albert’s wallet.

Mauricette Albin says she tried to stop a man who’d gotten in through an open door on Saturday while Albert Albin was working outside. She tried to keep the man from breaking into their safe. He shoved her away.

Mauricette Albin says she is ready if the crook comes back.

She says that she sees him come in, “I don’t care. I got a gun.”
