In the tradition of the Olympics, the Torch Run, which is sponsored by the Nebraska National Guard, symbolizes the spirit of the State Games, which offer competition in more than 60 sports for Nebraska athletes of all ages and abilities from July 19-28 in Lincoln, Omaha and surrounding communities.  The Torch Run officially concludes with the lighting of the caldron by a mystery athlete at the Games Opening Ceremonies on Friday, July 19 at Lincoln’s Seacrest Field.

Officials reported today that Games entries have already topped 5,500 and reminded athletes that the deadline for most sports is Monday, July 1.  So far, the top five sports in participation include Soccer (545), Energy Walk/5k (522), Volleyball (434), Basketball (372) and Track & Field (310).

Offut AFB Opens POW/MIA Forensics Lab

offutt-air-force-base(AP) — A forensics lab has opened at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha with a special mission: identify the remains of missing soldiers, sailors and airmen from past wars.

The lab has been constructed at Offutt Air Force Base inside a section of the massive former Martin bomber plant.

St. Pat’s Cracks Top 10 in U.S. Cellular Cup Standings

saint-pats-irishThe North Platte St. Patrick’s girls athletic and fine arts programs finished in the top 10 of the U.S. Cellular Cup standings for the 2012-13 school year.

The Nebraska School Activities Association is pleased to announce the final standings for The U.S. Cellular® Cup, the NSAA All-Activities Award for Nebraska high schools. The annual awards program, which began in 2007 to recognize the state’s most successful high school athletic and fine arts programs, is presented to the 12 Nebraska high schools which earn the most points during the school year by participating in NSAA education- based activity programs. This all-activities (fine arts and sports), all-school recognition platform recognizes the “Best of the Best” each year in NSAA programs.

The U.S. Cellular Cup is presented to the winning schools in the four classes of the All-School Division, Girls Division and Boys Division during special ceremonies the following fall.

U.S. Cellular® Cup Details & Point System Each year the NSAA and U.S. Cellular recognize the most successful activities programs in the state with the U.S. Cellular Cup. U.S. Cellular Cup winners are determined by a point system based on participation in NSAA education-based activities and performance in state championship events within each division and class. Music, which does not have a state-level event, earns points based on participation at the district music contest.

The boys and girls competition in each class features schools earning participation and performance points from their respective activities. In the case of coed schools, the fine arts activity performance points are divided equally among a school’s boys and girls U.S. Cellular Cup totals. In the all-school division, schools receive participation points for each of its NSAA registered programs, and earn additional points for placing in NSAA championship events.

St. Pat’s girls programs finished tied for sixth in the Class C  girls division with 142.5 points. Columbus Scotus won the girls division with 265 points. The overall Class C winner for both divisions combined is Kearney Catholic with 370 points. The Class A overall winner is Lincoln Pius X with 642.5 points. North Platte High School did not crack to the top ten in any division. Class B winner is Omaha Skutt Catholic with 620 points and Class D winner is St. Mary’s with 315 points.

Ohio Daycare Worker Accused of Drugging Snacks

Tammy Eppley
Tammy Eppley

(AP) — A central Ohio day care worker has been accused of sprinkling drugs on snacks to get children to go to sleep.

Tammy Eppley was charged Monday in Columbus with six counts of child endangering after police in nearby Westerville said they obtained text messages in which she admitted giving children the allergy medicine Benadryl and the hormone and sleep aid melatonin.

Police say Eppley jokes in one text that a child almost discovered her action after saying sprinkles on some cupcakes tasted funny.

The 37-year-old Eppley denies the accusations. She says the text messages were tongue-in-cheek jokes she regrets and they don’t refer to anything that really happened.

Police reports don’t indicate any children were hurt.

A county children’s services agency investigation couldn’t substantiate allegations of physical abuse against Eppley.

NE Humane Society Has ‘Price Is Right’ Sale on Dogs and Cats This Weekend

kitty-humane-society(AP) — The Nebraska Humane Society is celebration the Memorial Day weekend by offering dogs and cats at deeply-discounted adoption fees.

The society’s shelter in Omaha has 95 dogs ready for adoption, and says its cat kennels are full, too. Shelter officials hope the discounts will prompt more adoptions to make room in the crowded shelter.

The society’s “Price is Right” sale will offer dogs for $50 off the regular adoption fee, and $25 off all adult cat adoptions.

The sale runs through Sunday, as the shelter is closed Monday.

For more information, visit the Humane Society’s website at http://www.nehumanesociety.org/site/PageServer.

Boy Scouts Vote to Allow Openly Gay Boys

boy-scouts(AP) — The Boy Scouts of America’s National Council has voted to ease a long-standing ban and allow openly gay boys to be accepted as Scouts.

Of the local Scout leaders voting at their annual meeting in Texas, more than 60 percent supported the proposal.

Under the proposal drafted by the Scouts’ governing board, gay adults will remain barred from serving as Scout leaders.

The outcome is unlikely to end a bitter debate over the Scouts’ membership policy.

Some conservative churches that sponsor Scout units wanted to continue excluding gay youths, in some cases threatening to defect if the ban were lifted. More liberal Scout leaders — while supporting the proposal to accept gay youth — have made clear they want the ban on gay adults lifted as well.
