OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol has planned special enforcement efforts for Douglas and Sarpy counties in eastern Nebraska.
The patrol says it will have troopers work overtime for the weekend efforts this month, August and September. A grant of nearly $12,700 from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety will help pay for the overtime.
The high visibility patrolling is aimed at taking more drunken drivers off the roads.

(Chadron, Neb.)- A 40-year old Minatare man is dead, after leading Dawes County Deputies on a short pursuit, then taking his own life in an apparent suicide.
Just after 11:00 p.m., (MDT), Tuesday, June 26, a man identified as Chad Sorensen, 40, Minatare, brandished a handgun at Deputies in the 200 block of Main Street in Crawford. Sorenson then fled the area in a 2007 Honda Civic. Deputies attempted to stop Sorenson and a low speed pursuit with speeds of 35 mph ensued.
At approximately 11:17 p.m., (MDT), Sorenson stopped the vehicle in the southbound lane of Highway 2/71, approximately two miles south of Crawford. The Dawes County Deputies, with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Chadron Police Department, set up a perimeter around the vehicle and attempted to make contact with Sorenson.
Just after 3:00 a.m., (MDT), Wednesday, June 27, law enforcement officers using a tactical shield were able to approach the vehicle where they discovered Sorenson dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Nebraska State Patrol Investigative Services Division is conducting the investigation and will forward reports once completed to the Dawes County Attorney. An autopsy will be conducted. State law requires a Grand Jury be convened whenever anyone dies while in the process of apprehension or in the custody of law enforcement.
Law enforcement was assisted by the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) in closing Highway 2/71, during the incident and subsequent investigation. Highway 2/71 was reopened to traffic at approximately 7:00 a.m., (MDT).
(Deb Collins)- The accident occurred just before 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 20, westbound I-80 near MM 198 (just west of the Brady Exit) in a construction zone where traffic was down to one lane (driving lane).
Preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a pavement roller working on the construction, entered the driving lane where the pavement roller was struck by a semi trailer truck.
The pavement roller spun around a couple of times and came to rest in the driving lane. The semi- came to rest upright on the westbound shoulder.
The driver of the pavement roller, a 71-year old male from Saint Paul, Neb., was transported to Great Plains Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the semi, a 35-year old male from Illinois was not injured.
The westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for about an hour. The crash remains under investigation.
Wednesday morning a vehicle crash on interstate 80 caused one injury and the closure of I-80 Westbound. All traffic is currently being re-routed to Highway 30. “We are dealing with two crashes in that area, and one crash involves injuries” says Deb Collins.
The crash is present near I-80 Marker 199 also known as the Brady exit.
No further information is available at this time.
(Scottsbluff, Neb.)- A special enforcement effort designed to reduce the potential for fatal or injury crashes in and around Scotts Bluff County, resulted in five motorists being arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).
The special enforcement which included four DWI check point as well as high visibility patrols took place Friday & Saturday, June 15-16 in and around Scotts Bluff County.
In addition to the five DWI arrests, troopers issued three citations for open container, three citations for drug possession, four citations for driving under suspension, and four citations and warnings for speeding. Eleven citations and warnings were also issued for violation of the state’s seat belt law.
The June enforcement was the final in a series of special efforts conducted in Scotts Bluff County (April-June), as part of a $7,440 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS).
Scotts Bluff County is listed as a priority county by NOHS due to the high number of alcohol related fatality crashes. In the past three years, Scotts Bluff County has had 12 fatality crashes of which seven have involved impaired driving.
The Nebraska State Patrol Troop E Headquarters-Scottsbluff will continue special enforcement efforts throughout the summer with an emphasis on impaired driving. Motorists are reminded to never drive impaired or distracted.

18- Driving While Intoxicated Arrests | 14- Driving Under Suspension |
12- Minor in Possession citations | 34- Seat Belt Citations & Warnings |

Imagine….seriously close your eyes and imagine waking up on a beautiful sunny morning with every intention of having a rocking out awesome day. You brew your coffee and look out the window as you imagine all the great things you will do on your Sunday funday. It’s early and you decide it’s a perfect day to grease up the bike and take it for a spin! While you are enjoying the scenery of the bike ride and you’re actually feeling pretty good about it you see a man whom you don’t know. Naturally you sense no danger, but imagine this man starts swinging sausage links at you in a violent rage. What would you do?
That is the exact scenario that a man from Brockton Massachusetts had to deal with on his Sunday morning bike ride.
The victim told authorities that Sunday morning around 8 AM he saw Michael Baker (pictured to the above) approach him as he was swinging sausage links in his hand. The victim has no idea who this man is, and he said he had no idea why he was attacking him with sausage links.
This is a bizarre story to report, but believe it or not Sausage Links can do some damage. Talk about a meat smack.
Then things started to get real. Baker threw away the meat and some bread and cheese he had stolen from nearby fairgrounds and began to beat the victim with a wrench. The victim suffered lacerations and was spotted by a jogger as he was yelling for help, shortly after he was taken to a hospital by an ambulance.
Baker fled the scene with the victims bike, a silver chain, and a ring. Police spotted Baker a few miles down the road and took him into custody.
All in all I feel really bad for this guy getting slapped around by sausage is one thing but a wrench is going way too far. It’s almost too bizarre to not think he was on some sort of mission…
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court says judges can’t order divorcing couples to file joint federal tax returns.
But the high court said in a ruling released Friday that if one spouse is unreasonably refusing to file a joint tax return, the judge can adjust the way the couple’s assets are divided.
Filing a joint tax return usually results in lower tax liability, but the high court said ordering a couple to file jointly is problematic because one spouse would be exposed to some unknown additional tax liability.
And federal law allows married couples to choose to file separately if they want to.
The Supreme Court ruling overturned a previous order in the divorce of Jennifer Lynn Dalbey and Matthew John Bock. Dalbey had objected to the joint tax returns.
