NBA All-Star Weekend Brings Basketball’s Best to Big Apple

NBA All-Star Game 2015 New York BrooklynNEW YORK (AP) — Think basketball is bad in New York now? Marv Albert remembers when fans would go to Madison Square Garden and wouldn’t even stick around to watch the Knicks.

The days of NBA doubleheaders there are long gone — a good thing, so both of New York’s bumbling ballclubs can’t lose at the same place on the same day.

Fans in the Big Apple remain just as passionate about good basketball as they were then, when the chance to see someone like Bill Russell made the opening act the main event. They get their chance this weekend when the NBA All-Star festivities come to town, and locals say the enthusiasm can’t be diminished no matter how many games the Knicks or Nets have lost.

“I don’t think it matters because you have all these great stars coming there and I think it’s going to be a wild scene, both Saturday in Brooklyn and then Sunday at the Garden,” said Albert, a New York native and longtime Knicks broadcaster who will call the game on TNT.

Breaking from what had become standard procedure of taking the mid-winter showcase to a warm-weather city, the NBA decided to stay home in 2015 and show off two of its flashiest arenas: Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, opened in 2012, and famed Madison Square Garden, recently renovated over the course of three years, and both with $1 billion price tags.

The buildings may be magical, but the basketball is miserable. The Knicks are headed toward their worst season ever with a 10-41 record entering Monday, while the Nets were 21-29, though still in the playoff race thanks to the mediocrity of the Eastern Conference.

Subway stations and trains have been decorated with pictures of the NBA’s best, but there’s nothing the league can do to clean up the Knicks and Nets. No matter, says Commissioner Adam Silver.

“I know that as a New Yorker, I don’t think interest in people’s favorite teams wanes necessarily because the team isn’t successful in a particular year,” he said last month at a press conference before a game in London, before the Knicks showed they were equally inept on the other side of the Atlantic.

“So I expect tremendous excitement around the game and the festivities in New York, certainly based on the number of requests I’m getting for tickets. There’s no lack of interest in New York.”

Brooklyn gets the Friday and Saturday events, All-Star Saturday being highlighted by a 3-point contest featuring Golden State teammates Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, and Atlanta sharpshooter Kyle Korver. The game Sunday is at MSG, “the world’s most famous arena” where Joe Frazier beat Muhammad Ali in the “Fight of the Century,” and Willis Reed gamely limped out of the tunnel to play in Game 7 against the Lakers and spark the Knicks to the 1970 NBA championship.

The building remains revered by today’s players, no matter how bad the Knicks team is that’s waiting when they get there.

“Having the game here at MSG is special and to be an All-Star and suiting up and taking the floor here is going to be a memory for a long time,” Curry said Saturday after the Warriors beat the Knicks.

Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony has kept playing through a sore left knee and all the losses in part because he can’t wait to play in the All-Star game — perhaps his last highlight this season. Even though he’s going to his workplace, he won’t be thinking about work.

“At the end of the day it’s still an achievement, still an accomplishment. I can’t go into that weekend thinking about kind of, what we’ve been going through throughout the regular season with the Knicks,” he said. “It’s a just a moment kind of to get away from that for a minute and just enjoy that weekend.”

Anthony was born in Brooklyn. So was Michael Jordan, the game’s MVP in 1998 the last time MSG hosted it. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA’s career scoring leader, is another New Yorker.

So the city has a tradition of basketball excellence that will never go away no matter how much the Knicks or Nets chip away at it. All-Star weekend is the next chapter.

“Regardless of what the Knicks or the Nets are doing, the city is the Mecca of basketball,” said TNT analyst Kenny Smith, who grew up in Queens before winning two NBA titles in Houston.

“I think that the city will be excited, regardless of what the Knicks, the Nets, St. John’s, Fordham University or any other teams are doing. It’s a city game. We own that and we love it, and we relish the fact that we are that.”

Curry, Thompson to Compete in 3-Point Contest

NBA All-Star Game 2015 New York BrooklynNEW YORK (AP) — Golden State guards Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson will join Atlanta’s Kyle Korver and five other players in the Three-Point Contest before the NBA All-Star game.

Houston’s James Harden and Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving also will compete along with defending champion Marco Belinelli of San Antonio, Portland’s Wesley Matthews and the Los Angeles Clippers’ J.J. Redick.

The event is Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The All-Star game is Feb. 15.

Curry made 10 3-pointers and scored 51 points Wednesday night in the Warriors’ home victory over Dallas. On Jan. 23, Thompson made 11 3-pointers — setting an NBA quarter record with nine in his 37-point third quarter — in a 52-point game against Sacramento. Korver leads the NBA in 3-point accuracy at 53.2 percent.

NBA Commissioner: All-Star Rosters Could Expand in Future

Adam Silver

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says the league will look at expanding All-Star rosters and the way players are selected.

Speaking before the Kings-Warriors game in Sacramento on Tuesday night, Silver said the NBA will discuss increasing the number of spots for the All-Star game with the players’ union in the future. He says he’s mostly happy with the voting process but could see players getting a vote, too.

Currently, 12 players are selected for the Eastern and Western Conference teams. Fans vote for the starters and coaches choose the reserves. Silver selects any replacements, as he did last week when he chose Kings center DeMarcus Cousins to take Kobe Bryant’s spot in the West.

Silver said it was a difficult decision to select Cousins over Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard. He says he felt for Lillard, and the two exchanged text messages about the decision.

3 Hawks, Durant and Westbrook are NBA All-Star Reserves

NBA All-Star Game 2015 New York BrooklynNEW YORK (AP) — Al Horford, Paul Millsap and Jeff Teague have been picked as reserves for the Eastern Conference All-Star team, giving the sizzling Atlanta Hawks three selections.

Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook were selected in the West, despite early season injuries for the Oklahoma City stars. The Miami Heat also had two reserves selected in Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade.

But Portland surprisingly only had one in LaMarcus Aldridge. Point guard Damian Lillard was not among the seven reserves selected.

Atlanta has won 17 in a row and has a 38-8 record, second-best in the NBA. The Hawks were hoping for four selections, but Kyle Korver was not chosen by East coaches.

Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving and first-timer Jimmy Butler of Chicago were the other players announced to the East roster on Thursday night.

The rest of the West reserves for the Feb. 15 game in New York: James Harden (Houston), Klay Thompson (Golden State), Tim Duncan (Spurs) and Chris Paul (Clippers).

Gasol Brothers to Start NBA All-Star Game; Lowry gets Spot

NBA All-Star Game 2015 New York BrooklynPau and Marc Gasol have been voted the first brothers to start in the NBA All-Star game, while Toronto’s Kyle Lowry made a late surge in fan balloting and will start for the Eastern Conference.

Lowry passed Dwyane Wade and will start alongside Washington’s John Wall, the first time the East has had two first-time starters at guard since 2000.

Golden State’s Stephen Curry made his own late surge to pass LeBron James as the overall leading vote-getter, the league announced Thursday. Kobe Bryant was also voted to start at West guard, though that’s in jeopardy because of a torn right rotator cuff.

Pau Gasol of Chicago will start up front for the East along with James and Carmelo Anthony for the Feb. 15 game in New York. Memphis’ Marc Gasol joins New Orleans’ Anthony Davis and the Clippers’ Blake Griffin in the frontcourt.

NBA Rising Stars Game Pits US Players vs. International

NBA All-Star Game 2015 New York BrooklynNEW YORK (AP) — The NBA has announced the Rising Stars Challenge will feature a new format at this year’s All-Star game weekend pitting first- and second-year players from the United States against first- and second-year players from around the world.

The game will be Feb. 13 in New York, site of this year’s All-Star game.

The NBA’s assistant coaches will select 10 American and 10 international players for the game with one ballot for each of the NBA’s 30 teams, according to the press release.

The rosters will include four guards, four frontcourt players and two players regardless of position. Each team must include at least three first-year players and three second-year players.

The head coaches for each team will consist of an assistant from the 2015 NBA All-Star game coaching staff.

LeBron James, Steph Curry lead NBA All-Star Voting

NBA All-Star Game 2015 New York BrooklynNEW YORK (AP) — LeBron James and Stephen Curry remain the leading NBA All-Star vote-getters after the second tally of fan ballots.

Cleveland’s James leads all with 775,810 votes at the Eastern Conference frontcourt spot. Golden State’s Curry has 755,486, good for second in the league and tops among the Western Conference guards.

In the results released Thursday, Chicago’s Pau Gasol and the New York’s Carmelo Anthony follow in the East frontcourt. Washington’s John Wall remains the East’s leading vote-getter in the backcourt, followed by Miami’s Dwyane Wade.

Kobe Bryant is second to Curry in the West backcourt. The frontcourt is led by the New Orleans’ Anthony Davis, the Los Angeles Clippers’ Blake Griffin and Memphis center Marc Gasol.

Jeter, Trout Lead AL over NL 5-3 in All-Star Game

MLB All-Star Game 2015 Minnesota Twins Target FieldMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Helping send Derek Jeter out a winner in his last All-Star game appearance, Mike Trout drove in two runs with a triple and a double to lead the American League past the National League 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Jeter started his 14th and final midsummer gathering of the game’s best with a vintage opposite-field double, following an ovation from the Target Field crowd of more than one minute. The Yankees captain went 2 for 2 and was removed to another roar from the fans in the top of the fourth inning.

Max Scherzer picked up the victory with a scoreless inning, and Twins closer Glen Perkins pitched a perfect ninth for the save in front of his home crowd to again give the AL home-field advantage for the World Series.

Another hometown favorite, Pat Neshek, took the loss for the NL.

Miguel Cabrera homered for the AL.

Trout was named the game’s MVP.
