MLB’s Oldest Player Can’t Relate to Today’s Youth

LaTroy Hawkins
LaTroy Hawkins

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — When Rockies closer LaTroy Hawkins was drafted in 1991, Colorado Gold Glove third baseman Nolan Arenado was two months old. A couple other teammates were in diapers, too.

But while the 42-year-old Hawkins may not relate to what he calls the “everybody gets a trophy” generation, he can still get them out.

Hawkins is preparing for his final season before retirement and is set to be the closer again for the Rockies. The right-hander is one of only 16 pitchers with 1,000 career appearances. He needs 36 more to move into the top 10.

Hawkins has pitched for 10 of the majors’ 30 teams and is set to be the oldest player in the majors this year.

Huskers Visit LA for Three-Game Set with Loyola Marymount

husker baseballAfter taking three-of-four from the BYU Cougars in Peoria, Ariz., last weekend, the Nebraska baseball team (4-3, 0-0 Big Ten) hits the road for the third straight weekend for a three-game series in Los Angeles, Calif., against the Loyola Marymount Lions (5-2, 0-0 WCC).

The Lions have played six of their seven games at home this season and are 5-1 at Page Stadium. The Lions opened the season with a series sweep of San Jose State and last weekend rallied to win the final two games of their series against Saint Joseph’s after dropping the series opener. The Lions lost their lone road game of the season, a 7-6 loss at San Diego State.

The Huskers and Lions have meet just twice all-time, with both meeting coming in 1988. Following a eight-day trip to Hawaii, the Huskers stopped in Los Angeles and played a pair of games against the Lions on their way back to Lincoln. The Lions took both games, 15-9 (3/29/88) and 10-7 (3/30/88).

This weekend’s games are scheduled for 8:05 p.m. (CT) on both Friday and Saturday, while the finale on Sunday is set for 2:05 p.m. (CT).

Seniors Chance Sinclair (1-1) and Kyle Kubat (0-0) are scheduled to throw on the first two games of the series for the third straight week. The Huskers have not announced a starter for Sunday’s finale.

MLB Players to Undergo Mandatory Domestic Violence Education

mlb bigNEW YORK (AP) — All major league players on 40-man rosters will attend a mandatory education program on domestic violence during spring training.

Major League Baseball said Tuesday the sessions, which will be held for every team under an agreement with the players’ association, will be coordinated by San Francisco-based Futures Without Violence.

MLB officials began meeting with groups about domestic violence last fall after a series of high-profile domestic violence cases involving NFL players. Esta Soler, president of Futures Without Violence, said in September that MLB reached out to her group, which works to prevent domestic and sexual violence and child abuse.

Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said Monday there also will be an education program for players who are not on 40-man rosters.

The program begins Thursday with Kansas City, Oakland and the Chicago Cubs participating.

Manfred Says Pace of Game Rules Crucial to Luring Young Fans

mlb bigPHOENIX (AP) — Commissioner Rob Manfred says new rules intended to speed up the pace of games are aimed at luring younger fans to baseball.

Manfred, speaking publicly on the changes for the first time since they were announced last Friday, says the rules are a “measured” approach worked out with the MLB Players Association.

The new commissioner, who took over when Bud Selig retired in January, says he has four children in their 20s, and that the attention span for that generation “seems to be shorter than the rest of ours.”

This season, batters will be required to have one foot in the batter’s box and pitchers and batters will be required to be ready to go at the conclusion of television commercials.

West Virginia Coach Pushing April Start for College Baseball

baseballThe college baseball season would run from April to August instead of February to June under an ambitious idea pushed by West Virginia coach Randy Mazey.

Mazey said Monday he plans to finalize the proposal this fall. He would need a conference to submit it into the NCAA legislative process.

Mazey said playing in the summer would increase ticket revenue and exposure. Among other benefits: decreasing the amount of money northern programs spend on travel and raising graduation rates because players would be enrolled in summer school.

But drafted players would have to hold off signing with major-league teams that selected them in June. Also, an agreement would have to be reached with ESPN to move the College World Series from June to August.

Trade, Injury Talk Takes Toll on Rockies’ Troy Tulowitzki

Troy Tulowitzki
Troy Tulowitzki

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Everywhere Troy Tulowitzki goes, he hears two questions: Can he stay healthy? And will he be traded?

The four-time All-Star shortstop reported early to Colorado Rockies camp on Monday with a steely resolve. He acknowledges the trade talk affected him in the offseason because his name seemingly was mentioned “every single day, and pretty hard.”

Tulowitzki is ahead of schedule as he again comes off surgery. This time it was on his hip. He’s also been sidelined with wrist, groin and rib injuries. It’s why he’s missed 222 games over the past three seasons.

Still owed at least $118 million on a contract that runs through 2020, Tulowitzki’s future is uncertain with a Rockies team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2009.

Boldt Earns Big Ten Honor

Lincoln – Nebraska outfielder Ryan Boldt was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday following a stellar performance during a 3-1 series victory over the BYU Cougars last week in Peoria, Ariz.

A sophomore from Red Wing, Minn., Boldt hit .625 (10-for-16) in the series, with at least two hits in every game, including a pair of three-hit performances. Boldt slugged .750 in the series and had an on-base percentage of .684, while two of his three walks were intentional.

On the season, Boldt is hitting .520 (13-for-25) with eight runs scored, while walking five times to just two strikeouts.

Monday’s award marks the third time Boldt has earned a weekly award from the conference office, as he was twice named Big Ten Freshman of the Week last season.

Huskers Take Series from BYU with 9-1 Win

husker baseballPeoria, Ariz. – The Nebraska baseball team (4-3, 0-0 Big Ten) wrapped up a 3-1 series win over the BYU Cougars on Saturday afternoon with a 9-1 victory in the series finale at the Peoria Sports Complex. The Huskers had a home-field advantage on the day as nearly 2,000 Husker fans showed up to support the team even though the Huskers were playing 1,200 miles from Lincoln.

The Husker offense found its rhythm on Saturday, as the nine runs matched the nine combined runs NU scored through the first three games of the series. Nebraska also stole four bases on the afternoon after swiping just two bases through the first six games of the season.

Head Coach Darin Erstad shuffled his lineup in the finale, moving Jake Schleppenbach to the leadoff spot after Austin Darby had been there through the first six games of the season. The move paid off, as the Schleppenbach led off the first, fifth and eighth innings with singles, while scoring in both the first and fifth.

Ben Miller ended the day going 2-for-5, including his second double of the series, and a career-high five RBIs. The sophomore’s biggest hit of the day came with two outs in the sixth when he roped a three-RBI double into the left-center-field gap.

Sophomore Ryan Boldt carried the Huskers over the four game series with a 10-for-15 performance, including a triple on Saturday. The Cougars intentionally walked Boldt twice during the weekend and both times Blake Headley made them pay with a double.

The Huskers got 3.1 innings out of sophomore starter Max Knutson and then a pair of freshman relievers finished the game. Zack Engelken and Jake Meyers combined to throw 5.2 innings of shutout relief, with Engelken earning the win and Meyers picking up the save with 3.0 innings of two-hit relief with three strikeouts.

Nebraska struck early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Schleppenbach scored on a single by Blake Headley and Ben Miller followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Boldt to put the Huskers ahead 2-0.

BYU cut the lead in half in the second when Colton Shaver led off with a solo home run on the first pitch he saw from Knutson. The sophomore lefty bounced back with a pair of strikeouts in the inning and kept the damage to one run.

The Huskers pushed their lead back to two runs in the third when Boldt led off the frame with a stand-up triple and scored on a single by Headley, his sixth RBI of the series.

After Engelken got out of a jam in the fifth when Boldt made a diving catch with two outs that erased an RBI single, the NU offense put another run on the board. Schleppenbach led off with his second hit of the day, stole second base and scored on a two-out single by Miller.

Engelken sat down the Cougars in order in the sixth and then the Husker offense went back to work and blew the game wide open in the bottom of the inning with five runs on four hits, including three doubles. Tanner Lubach got the inning started with a double off the left-field wall for his first hit of the season after starting the year 0-for-18. Austin Darby followed with his first RBI of the season on a single that pushed NU’s lead to 5-1. Steven Reveles got a two out rally started with a RBI double and then back-to-back walks loaded the bases, setting the stage for Miller to drop a three-RBI double.

The Huskers will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Los Angeles, Calif., for a three-game series against Loyola Marymount. The Huskers and Lions are scheduled to play at 8:05 p.m. (CT) on both Friday and Saturday night, while the finale on Sunday is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
