Vintage Baseball Proves a Hit with Modern Players

baseballPHILADELPHIA (AP) — No batting helmets, no fielding gloves and no pitching overhand.

This isn’t your grandfather’s baseball. It’s your great-great-grandfather’s game.

Vintage baseball teams throughout the U.S. play America’s favorite pastime the old-fashioned way. That means wearing historically accurate 19th century uniforms and using rules from 1864.

And the sport is growing. Players say it brings them back to a simpler time and preserves a slice of the past.

Modern-day fans watching these games might notice home plate is round, and the bases are canvas bags filled with sand. Team members even drink beverages from metal cups or canteens.

The vocabulary is different, too. Batters are called “strikers.” And if you make an out, you’re “dead.”

In that case, you can let loose with a vintage curse word: “Tarnation!”

Red Sox Capitalize on Miscues, Beat Royals 6-3

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The last-place Boston Red Sox took advantage of three critical errors by the first-place Kansas City Royals, pulling away late in a 6-3 victory Thursday night that ended a four-game losing streak.

Clay Buchholz (8-8) allowed three runs, two earned, over 6 1-3 innings for the Red Sox. He turned a one-run lead over to the Boston bullpen, and it preserved his sixth straight win against the Royals. Edward Mujica handled a perfect ninth for his fifth save.

Kansas City’s advantage in the AL Central dropped to a half-game over idle Detroit.

Liam Hendriks (1-2) failed to last three innings while making a spot start for left-hander Danny Duffy, who is shelved with shoulder soreness. The Royals’ defense didn’t do Hendriks any favors, making all three errors in the first four frames.

Holland, Duffy Close to Returning for Royals

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — All-Star closer Greg Holland could be available for the Kansas City Royals this weekend after dealing with some tightness in his right arm, while left-hander Danny Duffy was awaiting word from doctors before beginning to throw again.

The Royals lead the AL Central by one game over Detroit.

Royals manager Ned Yost said before Thursday night’s game against Boston that Holland felt good after throwing Monday. Holland planned to play catch and would be available if all went well.

Holland has not pitched since saving a 4-1 win over Texas on Sept. 3. Wade Davis picked up three saves in his place during the Royals’ recent six-game road trip.

Right-hander Liam Hendriks made a spot start Thursday night for Duffy, who left his previous outing after one pitch with soreness in his left shoulder. Duffy had hoped to only miss one start.

Selig: Domestic Violence Policy has been Discussed

Bud Selig MLBSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig says the league and players’ union have previously discussed the idea of a blanket policy regarding domestic violence during collective bargaining, yet so far baseball has opted to handle any issue on a case-by-case basis.

Selig, speaking Thursday at AT&T Park as part of his farewell tour before the Giants hosted Arizona, declined to address the NFL’s situation surrounding the Ray Rice case and whether he thought there could be an impartial investigation.

Selig says he can’t remember the last domestic violence case involving a baseball player. Talks about a policy could come up again in the next collective bargaining, but Selig leaves office Jan. 25 and Rob Manfred takes over.

“Yes, it has been discussed, because we’re sensitive to all issues,” he says.

Shields Shuts Down Tigers as Royals Win 3-0

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — James Shields allowed two hits over seven innings in another terrific performance, and the Kansas City Royals edged Detroit 3-0 on Wednesday night to take a one-game lead over the Tigers atop the AL Central.

Shields (14-7) gave up a single to Ian Kinsler leading off the first. Then he picked off Kinsler — and retired every other batter he faced until another Detroit single in the seventh. The Tigers put two on that inning, but Shields worked out of the jam.

Kelvin Herrera pitched the eighth and Wade Davis finished for his third save.

Rick Porcello (15-11) pitched well for the Tigers, but Kansas City pushed across two runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Salvador Perez and Lorenzo Cain.

Alcides Escobar added a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

colorado-rockiesNEW YORK (AP) — Rafael Montero earned his first major league win, Eric Young Jr. went 3 for 3 with an RBI triple and the suddenly surging New York Mets beat the Colorado Rockies 2-0 Wednesday night for their fourth consecutive victory.

Montero (1-3) returned from the minors and allowed three hits over 5 1-3 innings in his seventh big league start. Juan Lagares had a sacrifice fly for the Mets, who have won seven of eight. They finished a three-game sweep of last-place Colorado, winning the final two by identical scores behind Montero and fellow rookie Jacob deGrom.

Scherzer, Tigers Beat Royals Again, 4-2

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — Max Scherzer escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, Rajai Davis and J.D. Martinez homered, and the Detroit Tigers beat Kansas City 4-2 on Tuesday night to pull within percentage points of the Royals atop the AL Central.

Scherzer (16-5) allowed a run and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings. Kansas City was down 3-1 in the fifth when Alex Gordon’s deep fly to right went just foul with two on. Gordon walked to load the bases with one out, but Salvador Perez lined out and Eric Hosmer struck out.

Joe Nathan earned his 30th save in 36 chances, allowing two infield singles to start the ninth before ending it with two strikeouts sandwiched around a picked-off runner.

Kansas City’s Jason Vargas (11-8) allowed four runs in 5 1-3 innings.

DeGrom Pitches 3-Hit Ball for 8; Mets Beat Rockies

colorado-rockiesNEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom burnished his rookie of the year credentials by pitching three-hit ball for eight dominant innings, and the New York Mets held on to beat the Colorado Rockies 2-0 Tuesday night for their sixth win in seven games.

Jeurys Familia got Wilin Rosario to ground out with the bases loaded for his fifth save. Mets closer Jenrry Familia gave up two hits and a walk and got only one out before manager Terry Collins brought on Josh Edgin. The left-hander struck out slugger Corey Dickerson.

The win came after the Mets learned captain David Wright would be shut down for the rest of the season because of inflammation in his left shoulder. The third baseman had an MRI on Tuesday and didn’t play.

Juan Lagares had an RBI single to help the Mets move to five games of .500 (70-75).

MLB Clarifies Home Plate Collision Rule

mlb bigNEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has sent a memo to teams clarifying this year’s experimental rule intended to limit collisions at home plate, saying runners should not be called safe if the ball clearly beats them.

The rule, announced in February, says a catcher can’t block the plate if he doesn’t have the ball. There have been several disputed calls, including a pair of decisions in the last five weeks that led to runners being called safe after video review.

The guidelines sent to teams Tuesday say the catcher’s positioning shouldn’t change the call when the throw clearly is ahead of the runner. They also say if the catcher is entirely in fair territory, he should not be considered to have blocked the plate. Photo examples were included.
