Mets Rally in 9th to Beat Rockies 3-2

colorado-rockiesNEW YORK (AP) — Curtis Granderson hit a tying triple off former-Met LaTroy Hawkins and scored two pitches later on Wilmer Flores’ sacrifice fly, giving New York a 3-2 win Monday night that stopped the Colorado Rockies’ four-game winning streak.

After Lucas Duda’s RBI double in the first, Jordan Lyles, Tommy Kahnle, Brooks Brown and Christian Friedrich pitched shutout ball through the eighth.

Travis d’Arnaud doubled leading off the ninth against Hawkins (3-3), who blew a save for the third time in 25 chances.

Granderson’s triple past right fielder Charlie Blackmon scored pinch-runner Eric Young Jr. Granderson then scored easily ahead of Drew Stubbs’ off-line throw on Flores’ fly to center.

Carlos Torres (7-5) pitched a perfect ninth for the Mets, who wore camouflage jerseys as they started a 10-game homestand.

Tigers Close Gap to 1 Game with Win over Royals

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — Torii Hunter had two of his three hits in a six-run third inning and the Detroit Tigers beat Kansas City 9-5 Monday to move within a game of the American League Central-leading Royals.

Justin Verlander (13-12) allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out four for Detroit, which moved into a tie with Seattle for the second AL wild card.

Nick Castellanos had two hits with two runs scored and two RBIs for the Tigers. Victor Martinez had three hits three hits and an RBI, and Hunter scored twice and drove in a run.

Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie (10-11) allowed eight runs — six earned — and 10 hits in 2 2-3 innings. Guthrie has given up 14 earned runs in his last 6 2-3 innings against Detroit.

Lorenzo Cain hit an inside-the-park home run for Kansas City in the seventh inning.

Duffy to Miss Start Due to Sore Shoulder

Danny-Duffy-Kansas-City-RoyDETROIT (AP) — Kansas City left-hander Danny Duffy will miss his next turn in the Royals’ rotation because of a sore shoulder.

Royals manager Ned Yost said Monday that an MRI didn’t show any structural damage. Duffy left his start Saturday at the New York Yankees after one pitch.

“He’s in Kansas City going through three or four rounds of treatment every day,” Yost said before the Royals played Detroit. “We’ll evaluate him when we get back.”

The 25-year-old is 8-11 with a 2.42 ERA.

The regular season is to end Oct. 4, which means the World Series would be scheduled to start Oct. 28 if the current postseason format is maintained. A seventh game would be Nov. 5 under that format.

In addition to traditional rivalries, interleague play has the AL East vs. NL East, AL Central vs. NL Central and AL West vs. NL West.

The All-Star game is in Cincinnati on July 14. MLB also said the amateur draft will start June 8.

Arenado Homers to help Rockies Sweep Padres, 6-0

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado homered, Franklin Morales pitched six solid innings for his first win in two months, and the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 6-0 on Sunday.

Jackson Williams also went deep for his first major league home run for the Rockies, who swept a three-game series for the first time since June 13-15 in San Francisco.

Colorado has won four straight, its longest streak since winning five in a row against Atlanta and the Giants in June. It was the Rockies’ first three-game sweep at home this season.

San Diego right-hander Tyson Ross entered with 14 consecutive quality starts and came within an out of making it 15. But he allowed a two-out walk to Williams and a pinch-hit single to Matt McBride, ending his day. Alex Torres got the last out of the sixth to keep it a three-run game.

Royals Spoil Jeter’s Day with 2-0 Win over Yankees

kc-royalsNEW YORK (AP) — Yordano Ventura and the Kansas City Royals turned Derek Jeter Day into another disappointing defeat for the New York Yankees’ captain in the dwindling days of his career.

Ventura pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning, and the AL Central leaders beat the Yankees 2-0 Sunday on a pair of unearned runs for their second shutout in the three-game series.

Kansas City scored due to errors by pitcher Shane Greene (4-3) in the second inning and right fielder Carlos Beltran in the third. The Royals, who won 1-0 Friday night on an unearned run following an error by third baseman Chase Headley, went 4-3 against the Yankees this year to take the season series for the first time since 1999.

Stubbs’ RBI Single lifts Rockies past Padres

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Drew Stubbs had a tiebreaking RBI single in the 12th inning to lift the Colorado Rockies past the San Diego Padres, 7-6, on Saturday night.

D.J. LeMahieu doubled off Jesse Hahn (7-4) to start the 12th and Charlie Culberson sacrificed him to third. Hahn then intentionally walked Charlie Blackmon and San Diego manager Bud Black aligned three defenders between third and second base in hopes of cutting off any grounder and getting the runner at the plate.

But Stubbs singled sharply down the third base line and into left field, allowing LeMahieu to score the winning run and send the Padres to their fourth loss in a row.

Nick Masset (2-0) picked up the victory with an inning of scoreless relief.

Finnegan 1st from 2014 Draft to Reach Majors

Brandon Finnegan Kansas City RoyalsNEW YORK (AP) — As if reaching the major leagues wasn’t enough, Brandon Finnegan struck out Derek Jeter in his very first inning.

The 21-year-old left-hander became the first player from the 2014 amateur draft to make his big league debut, pitching two perfect innings Saturday in the Kansas City Royals’ 6-2 loss to the New York Yankees.

Selected in the first round from Texas Christian with the 17th pick overall, Finnegan signed for a bonus of $2,200,600.

He relieved with Kansas City trailing 6-1 and retired John Ryan Murphy on a flyout to center with his first pitch, a 92 mph fastball. Finnegan struck out Jacoby Ellsbury on a changeup and Jeter on a 94 mph fastball.

Finnegan was 2 years old when Jeter made his major league debut in 1995.

McCarthy, Yankees Rebound in 6-2 Win over Royals

kc-royalsNEW YORK (AP) — Brandon McCarthy won for the second time in six starts, and the New York Yankees feasted on Kansas City’s bullpen in a 6-2 win Saturday after Royals starter Danny Duffy left because of an injury after just one pitch.

A night after a 1-0 loss in the series opener dropped them 4½ games back for the AL’s second wild card, the weak-hitting Yankees scored as many as six runs for the first time since Aug. 29.

McCarthy (6-4) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings with four strikeouts and a walk. He was 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA in 18 starts before the Yankees acquired from Arizona on July 6.

Shawn Kelley, Dellin Betances and David Robertson combined for hitless relief. New York relievers have thrown 11 innings of scoreless, three-hit relief in their last four games with 14 strikeouts and no walks.

Rockies Shut Out Padres 3-0

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Tyler Matzek pitched a three-hitter for his first career shutout, Nolan Arenado and Drew Stubbs homered, and the Colorado Rockies beat San Diego 3-0 Friday night.

It was the third straight victory for Matzek (5-9) since snapping a five-game losing streak. The Padres managed only one extra-base hit against Matzek — a leadoff double by Abraham Almonte in the ninth that went over the head of left fielder Corey Dickerson.

He struck out six, including three in the third around Rymer Liriano’s single, the only other hit to reach the outfield.

Matzek was the first Rockies pitcher to go the distance this season. He improved to 5-0 with a 0.97 ERA in five starts in which he’s pitched at least seven innings.

The Padres have lost three in a row.
