Verlander Impresses as Tigers Beat Rockies 4-2

colorado-rockiesDETROIT (AP) — Justin Verlander equaled his longest outing of the season, pitching eight solid innings to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.

A day after the AL Central-leading Tigers added star left-hander David Price to their rotation, Verlander (10-9) showed signs that he might be rounding into form. He allowed two runs and eight hits, striking out five without a walk. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 4.66.

Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for his 22nd save in 27 chances, retiring Charlie Blackmon on a flyout with two on to end it.

Franklin Morales (5-6) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. He walked four and struck out two.

The Rockies have lost five of six. Colorado right fielder Carlos Gonzalez left the game after aggravating his sprained right ankle making a sliding catch in the fifth.

Rockies’ Gonzalez Leaves Game After Sliding Catch

Carlos-Gonzalez-Rockies-CarDETROIT (AP) — Colorado Rockies right fielder Carlos Gonzalez has left Friday night’s game at Detroit after sliding into the wall while making a terrific catch in foul ground.

Gonzalez caught Victor Martinez’s flyball to end the fifth inning, then limped off the field, having aggravated a sprained right ankle. He was replaced in the sixth by Brandon Barnes.

Gonzalez is having a rough season, hitting only .237 with 10 homers. Friday’s injury comes three weeks after he came off the disabled list — he missed over a month with a left index finger injury.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer will be out three to six weeks with a stress fracture of the third finger of his right hand.

He aggravated a previous injury on a check swing in the fourth inning of a 6-3 victory Thursday night over the Minnesota Twins. Billy Butler hit for Hosmer in the sixth and X-ray’s revealed the fracture.

Hosmer was hit by a pitch by Jon Lester on July 20 at Boston and did not start six of the next seven games.

“Very frustrating, bad timing,” Hosmer said.

Hosmer, who will go on the disabled list, had a 16-game hitting streak before Lester’s pitch hit him.

Escobar, Ventura Lead Royals Past Twins, 6-3

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alcides Escobar hit a two-run triple and Yordano Ventura pitched seven effective innings as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Minnesota Twins 6-3 Thursday.

Escobar’s triple highlighted a four-run seventh. The inning also included Jarrod Dyson’s run-scoring single. Dyson stole second and third and scored on catcher Eric Fryer’s throwing error.

Ventura (8-8) limited the Twins to two runs, one earned, on five hits, while striking out seven.

Danny Santana led off the game with a home run. Mike Moustakas committed two throwing errors in the third to gift the Twins with an unearned run.

Caleb Thielbar (2-1) retired only one of three batters he faced for Minnesota.

Arrieta Pitches Cubs Past Rockies 3-1

colorado-rockiesCHICAGO (AP) — Jake Arrieta struck out seven in seven innings, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday.

Arrieta (6-2) allowed one run and three hits in his first victory since June 30 at Boston. The 6-foot-4 right-hander has a 1.73 ERA in his last 11 starts, holding opponents to a .162 batting average.

The Cubs won three of four in a matchup of last-place teams. The Rockies have lost four of five and 11 of 15 overall.

Stuck in Limbo, Royals Stand Pat at Trade Deadline

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Stuck in limbo between contending and conceding, the Kansas City Royals opted to stand pat as baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline passed Thursday, even as several other teams pulled off splashy moves.

The Tigers, who led the Royals by 4 1/2 games in the AL Central at the start of the day, landed arguably the biggest coup in left-hander David Price. The Mariners and Yankees, neck-and-neck with Kansas City in the wild-card hunt, also were involved in a series of trades.

Meanwhile, Royals general manager Dayton Moore said his perennially building club checked on potential trade targets but “at the end of the day, there weren’t any players we could get our hands on that would be upgrades over what we have.”

The Royals haven’t made the playoffs since 1985.

Rockies Beat Cubs 6-4 in 10 Innings

colorado-rockiesCHICAGO (AP) — Brandon Barnes hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the 10th inning, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Chicago Cubs 6-4 on Wednesday night.

Colorado loaded the bases on two walks and Michael McKenry’s third hit of the game before Barnes singled to left with one out against Wesley Wright (0-2). Drew Stubbs then scored on a wild pitch, helping the Rockies stop a three-game slide.

Rob Scahill (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for his second major league win and Adam Ottavino got three outs for his first career save. Scahill was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs before the game, bolstering Colorado’s bullpen after it used eight relievers in Tuesday night’s 16-inning loss.

Perez Helps Royals Struggle to 3-2 Win over Twins

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez triggered a go-ahead rally with a double in the sixth inning and made several spectacular plays behind the plate, helping the Kansas City Royals to a scrappy 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night.

Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakas had RBI doubles during the Royals’ charge, which wiped away a 1-0 deficit. Jason Frasor earned his first win since arriving in Kansas City by striking out Chris Colabello to leave the bases loaded in the sixth inning.

Scott Downs and Kelvin Herrera gave back a run in the seventh, but Herrera struck out Brian Dozier and Josh Willingham with runners on second and third to preserve a one-run lead.

Wade Davis worked a perfect eighth, and All-Star closer Greg Holland survived two wild pitches that sent Eduardo Nunez to third base by striking out Sam Fuld for his 28th save.

Cubs Beat Rockies in 16 Innings, 4-3

colorado-rockiesCHICAGO (AP) — Catcher John Baker scored the winning run in the bottom of the 16th inning after pitching a scoreless top half, and the Chicago Cubs overcame a three-run deficit to beat the Colorado Rockies 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Baker scored on Starlin Castro’s fly to end game that lasted 6 hours, 27 minute, a record for longest game by time for both teams.

Chicago used seven relievers before Baker (1-0) became the first Cubs position player to take the mound since Aug. 27, 2012, when Joe Mather faced Milwaukee.

The Rockies also used all seven relievers in their bullpen, then turned to Tyler Matzek, a starter in the 16th.

Matzek (2-5) walked Baker to lead off the inning. Baker advanced to second on a sacrifice, then third on Anthony Rizzo’s bloop single before scoring.

Royals Acquire RHP Jason Frasor from Rangers

Frasor was 1-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 38 appearances this season, his second in Texas. He spent nine seasons with Toronto (2004-12), returning to the Blue Jays after being traded to the White Sox in July 2011 and finishing that season in Chicago.

Patton is 4-3 with a 4.08 ERA and 14 saves in 34 relief appearances for Triple-A Omaha this season. He has 60 strikeouts in 46 1-3 innings while holding opponents to a .161 batting average.
