Correia Solid as Twins Rock Rockies 9-3

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Kevin Correia pitched six innings of one-run ball, Eduardo Escobar homered, and the Minnesota Twins pulled away late to beat the Colorado Rockies 9-3 on Saturday.

Correia (5-11) scattered seven hits and cooled off the power-hitting Rockies, who stranded 10 baserunners and were kept in the yard after slugging eight home runs in their previous two games. He walked one and struck out one in snapping a hard-luck three-game losing streak during which he had received no run support.

The Twins were shut out in the last two losses for Correia, who helped the Twins offense with a run-scoring double for his first hit of the season and first RBI in three years.

Tyler Matzek (1-4) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings.

The First Nationals Squeak by Ogallala 3-2

first-nationalsThe North Platte First Nationals held off Ogallala Friday night for a 3-2 win at Bill Wood Field.

North Platte (28-17) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning before its offense stalled in a 3-2 win over Ogallala. Ogallala scored a run in the top of the second inning then tied the game up with a run in the fifth inning. The First Nationals regained the lead and scored the winning run in the sixth inning as Darian Allberry scored on an Alex Harms RBI single. North Platte only managed two hits though from the second through the fifth innings.

Marcos Silos started the game on the mound for North Platte and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits in four plus innings. He also walked two batters and struck out three. Tulo, Stubbs Homer, Rockies Beat Twins 6-2

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Jorge De La Rosa pitched six strong innings, Troy Tulowitzki and Drew Stubbs each hit two-run homers, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Minnesota Twins 6-2 on Friday night in the teams’ first interleague meeting at Coors Field in six years.

De La Rosa (10-6) allowed one run and six hits in winning his fourth straight and reaching double-digit wins in a season for the fourth time in his career. He benefited from a power surge that has seen Tulowitzki hit three homers and Stubbs two in their last two games.

The Rockies also benefited from the return of star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, who missed the previous 35 games because of a benign tumor on his left index finger that had to be excised surgically.

Kris Johnson (0-1), recalled from Triple A Rochester on Thursday, gave up five runs on eight hits in four innings.

Sanchez Helps Tigers Squeak Out 2-1 Win over KC

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Anibal Sanchez tossed seven stingy innings, Ian Kinsler and Miguel Cabrera drove in runs and the Detroit Tigers squeaked out a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Sanchez (6-3) scattered eight hits without a walk to help the AL Central-leading Tigers take their second straight from Kansas City. The second-place Royals dropped 6 1-2 games back in the division with two games left before the All-Star break.

Salvador Perez drove in the only run for the Royals, who squandered a solid start by Danny Duffy (5-9). He gave up both runs, only one earned, while losing for the fourth time in five starts.

Joe Nathan worked around a single and a walk in the ninth inning to earn his 19th save, and gave Detroit its fifth straight win over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium this season.

Nathan got Nori Aoki to ground out on a full-count pitch to end the game.

Rockies Activate Gonzalez from Disabled List

Carlos-Gonzalez-Rockies-CarDENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez was activated from the 15-day disabled list after missing 35 games because of left index finger inflammation.

To make room for Gonzalez, who was in the starting lineup for Friday night’s interleague game against Minnesota, the Rockies optioned right-handed pitcher Jair Jurrjens to their Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs.

Gonzalez has been sidelined since June 3 and underwent surgery on the finger a week later after doctors discovered a benign tumor. Before rejoining the Rockies, Gonzalez made four rehab appearances with Colorado Springs earlier this week.

Jurrjens was 0-1 with a 10.61 ERA in two starts for the Rockies.

DENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort says he’s sorry for his testy reactions to disgruntled fans, including telling one of them that maybe Denver doesn’t deserve a Major League Baseball team anymore.

In a statement released by the club Friday, Monfort said he has no intention of moving the team and formally apologized for his prickly email replies.

In a series of responses to fans unhappy with the bad baseball they’ve been witnessing, Monfort suggested they not come out to Coors Field if they’re that mad and suggested that Denver might not deserve a team.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals activated outfielder Nori Aoki from the disabled list and optioned infielder Christian Colon to Triple-A Omaha before Kansas City’s game Friday night against Detroit.

Aoki had been sidelined since June 21 with a strained left groin. He was 1 for 10 during a three-game rehab assignment for Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Colon was 4 for 12 with two doubles and a triple in his first big league stint.

Where Aoki will fit back in remains to be seen. Jarrod Dyson and Lorenzo Cain have played well since he has been out, and Aoki could eventually platoon in right field.

He was starting Friday night, but that was partly because left fielder Alex Gordon remains out with a sprained right wrist. Dyson was starting in his place.

The First Nationals Hammer Hershland

first-nationalsThe North Platte First Nationals beat Hershland 17-0 at Bill Wood Field Thursday.

North Platte (27-17) wasted no time jumping out to an early lead by scoring five runs in the first inning, including a two RBI triple by Luke Volz.  The First Nationals scored 10 more runs in the second inning and two in the third inning to get the 17-0 run-rule victory.

Ty Brockmoller returned from an injury to start the game on the mound for North Platte. He went three and two-third innings and gave up just two hits, struck out four batters and walked two. Devan Hovden pitched the final one and one-third inning and only allowed two batters to reach base on walks.

Volz led the way at the plate by going 2-3 with a triple, four RBI and three runs scored. Riley Vierya had North Platte’s only other extra-base hit with a double. Jack Kenny, Darian Allberry and Drew Callaghan each drove in two runs in the win.

North Platte’s next game is Friday against Ogallala at Bill Wood Field. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm first pitch.

Tigers Maul Second-Place Royals in 16-4 Romp

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Everybody in Detroit’s lineup had at least one hit and scored one run, the season-best offensive onslaught spurring the Tigers to a 16-4 rout of the Kansas City Royals in the opener of their four-game series Thursday night.

The Tigers established a season-high for runs just two days after their 14-5 blitzing of the Dodgers, and took a 5 1/2-game lead over the second-place Royals in the AL Central.

Drew Smyly (5-8) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk in 6 2-3 innings for Detroit.

Jeremy Guthrie (5-8) gave up a career-worst eight earned runs on eight hits, three walks and two hit batters. He was mercifully pulled with no outs in the fifth, which means the Royals’ veteran has now allowed 16 earned runs in eight-plus innings covering his last two starts.
